Borealis: 1 Improvement; Slight Room for More Improvement

Have been sporting The North Face Borealis backpack, on a daily basis, for decades, primarily due to: 1) organization of the internal pockets, and 2) the convenient, external, bungee cord.Greatest Improvement: am grateful that The North Face replaced the external, thin, mesh, side pockets with sturdier, solid fabric. THANK YOU!Only Complaint about this (Women's) Model: inside the second section-where most of the pockets are located-the deepest pocket is not as deep as that of previous Borealis versions.I believe that, in the past, I have purchased either a men's version, or a unisex version, of this model. I also notice that the shoulder straps are not as thick as those of my previous Borealis backpacks.Otherwise, I am satisfied with this product.

Good for mountain biking - not the most practical backpack

You can definitely find a purpose for it in your life but you're probably smarter getting the larger option. I've been using it for mountain bike rides - so I'll throw in my car keys, water bottles, phone, etc. Also, I can put a U-lock on the outer pocket pretty easily. The pockets are actually very thoughtful and useful in terms of compartments and I can also tie my helmet on the outer bungee. The straps are not restrictive in terms ofMobility and do not make me scrunch up my shoulderscant really use the water bottle pocket in my opinion. Great Backpack, a little damage from shipping.
21 December 2022

I use this backpack for my daily commute to and from the office which is about a 20 min walk each way (or a 10 min jog if I'm running late). I bought the Borealis because it is the same model of the backpack that I have been using for over 5 years that is still going strong! I am transitioning my old one to more sports-related uses and using this one specifically for work. I LOVE how the Borealis distributes the weight of the gear on the shoulders and back, because it does not feel like any one area gets overloaded.I like the combination of open storage vs. compartmentalized pockets because I can have space to stuff whatever I need into the big pocket, and I can have my sensitive tech gear organized in the other.I gave 4 stars because there was a crease in the ... MoreI use this backpack for my daily commute to and from the office which is about a 20 min walk each way (or a 10 min jog if I'm running late). I assume it is because of shipping, but that zipper snags a little bit now and I have to use both hands to open it. I hope it straightens out with time. If not, I will trade it in for another.

Great design poor durability

I have bought my kids The North Face backpacks for school for years because they always had water bottles and seemed to collect tons of useless stuff. I was a big fan of the of the multiple pockets and storage spaces. Eventually, the bags all gave in at some point- the pocket for the water bottle or in this case, the strap. The first few bags took a couple years, so I can understand that. But this one is already coming apart. I know kids can be rough but the rest of the bag is pristine and with learning practically all on iPads, the weight he carries is insignificant. I think a bag that costs this much should last more than 3 months of school. I hate to switch brands but this is a waste of money. Like it but where is the 2nd water bottle pocket?
12 March 2023

I am surprised that I love this bag since it is Sooooo small. If it was 12L instead of 10L & actually had 2 water bottle pockets I'd buy it in every colour. I use this for short hikes or day trips (zoo/anywhere I don't want to bring my purse). For reference the ONLY water bottle pocket fits a child size contigo water bottle (if you really fight with it) in the VERY TINY water bottle pocket. I can fit a 12oz swell type bottle but they are tall & it looks a bit funny. The inside & front pocket I can get a larger water bottle, set of extra kid clothes, a few snacks, wallet & keys. That's it. Nothing more. As much as I like this bag I am really irritated with the blatant lie that there are 2 water bottle pockets. That is such misleading advertising & doesn't make me trust the company in any way. The 2nd "water bottle" pocket fits a tube of chap stick, maybe a set of keys. I wouldn't put my keys in this pocket as it has a flap not a zipper. There is not place on this earth where this pocket could be considered a water bottle pocket & clearly this has annoyed me, but for me it isn't a deal breaker. The quality seems good, the end of the bungee cord on the front was out when I bought the bag but I just had to re-tie the end inside the front pocket I might double tie these now since I know they are not designed well with a hard knot as they should be. If you put anything in the bungee check to make sure the cord is tied tight inside the front pocket or your item will be long gone. Also check the size before you commit to this backpack since it is very very small. Please make it a bit bigger North Face!!

Not the quality we expected from TNF.
26 April 2022

Let me start by saying the last North Face backpack we got is still in great shape and we got it during a gift exchange over 14 years ago!! Both my husband and son used it for everything from camping to shooting practice (filled with heavy bullets). There isn't a tear or scratch on it and it's been stuffed full many times. With that being said, my son was starting his first year of college this year and having used the same backpack his entire high school career, it was time past time for a new one. As our other TNF backpack had lasted so long, this was an easy choice, even though we normally wouldn't spend this amount on a backpack. We bought the black patch one and I will say, it's the cutest backpack I've ever seen. As our other TNF backpack had lasted so long, this was an easy choice, even though we normally wouldn't spend this amount on a backpack. We bought the black patch one and I will say, it's the cutest backpack I've ever seen. I purchased it at the end of November, gave it to him for Christmas (he loves it), and as he didn't start in-person classes until around February, he saved it until then to use. When he finally did use it, it was only for a couple spiral notebooks, writing utensils, maybe a few protein bars and possibly a textbook (although I'm not sure if he even had one at the time). Anyhow, it was nothing too heavy. After using it for about 3 weeks, the seam on the inside top of the main flap began to seperate. It's nothing that is noticable from the outside, but it's definitely something that will get worse, quickly. Even though he only used it for a few weeks, we are outside of the return window. So now, my options are to just ignore it and use the backpack until it's completely falling apart (which wont be too long considering where the issue is), or spend around $20 to mail it in for (possible) warranty work. If it was a year from now, I wouldn't be too upset about it, but after three weeks of mild use?? There's just no excuse for that. It's such a shame, I'm left feeling as though TNF just isn't the same quality it used to be.

The only backpack you'll ever need!! Love it!
1 August 2022

I bought this backpack because I was going to college and wanted a durable but practical backpack. This backpack has exceeded all expectations! It has so many compartments for all of my school supplies (MacBook, iPad, AirPods, chargers, textbooks, notebooks, pencils, etc.). The backpack offers lots of padding, so I feel safe putting my electronics in there! I love the small compartment for easy access! I put my phone, AirPods, chargers and pencils in there! Love the look of the backpack too! There is also a way to expand the backpack (front to back) to allow for more books to fit (which I didn't know till I discovered it)! There are also straps on the outside to hold a jacket if you don't want to put it on the inside! This replaced my everyday crossbody purse
16 May 2022

It's perfect for quick errands and day trips, and it easily holds my iPad Air. Some people have said that it can't hold a water bottle in the water bottle pocket, and it can. I can fit a standard 16 fl oz Poland Spring bottle in it. It also has a pocket with a flap on the other side of the bag, which is super useful for storing keys or other random objects. One of the best things about this bag is the handles. Many mini backpacks have thin handles, which make them uncomfortable to wear. Thankfully, the backpack has padding, and I have no issues wearing it all day. I also love that it is a structured backpack, and I don't have to worry about my things moving all over inside it. I definitely recommend this bag, and I love to see other NorthFace backpacks made in this way.

Unbalanced design

Another reviewer also mentions the big issue that I have with this bag, I'm really surprised that this design got approved. I can only assume that the designers did not have to use it. At £110 it is quite pricey so I'm moved to write this. Its all about the ridiculous front admin pocket. The pocket is only half the length of the bag and it really should have gone all the way down as it really unbalances the whole bag when you have even just a few things in there such a phone/purse/glasses. When the main compartment is empty/has only a few things in it then the admin pocket becomes very heavy and all the weight is being suspended at a height making it a strange/unbalanced experience to carry. Another issue is that when you place the bag down (when the admin pocket is full) it tips over immediately. This renders the lovely waterproof base totally pointless as your bag is now face down on a wet pavement. It looks lovely and should really be a great bag but it needs a design revamp for the next iteration.
