Basically, made for a fat guy with kinda short arms. There is no waist drawstring (or whatever you call it) that's just insane to me that they would not include one. Insane. Especially considering that it's oversized. And sort of in line with my last point is the hood depth isn't adjustable. A lot of jackets I've had in the past will either have an elastic style cord or some type of velcro flap that you can customize for your head size. Hands down the best value in winter parkas

The warmest winter parka I've ever owned. I researched every high end brand online and this is hands down the best value in winter parkas. If you don't mind the boxy style this jacket is the best deal around. The faux fur keeps the wind and snow out of your face. The velcro might seem lower end than other jacket's hardware but it's easy to seal and does a better job at keeping the elements out. Everything seems very durable and well made. PLENTY of pockets. Comes down low enough to cover your behind. The downsides? I wish the hand warming pockets were better located: they're placed too high up to comfortably keep your hands in. Lastly I wish there was a way to cinch the bottom so cold air wouldn't creep up but that's not a big concern either. Do make sure to size down because it sizes very big. I normally wear medium and am glad I ordered a small. Even the small fits me a bit loosely, which is fine for layering.

Not only have I received a number of compliments on the look but the warmth it provides and ability to block wind feel substantial. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 145 lbs. I needed a coat that would fit my slender body especially with sleeve length. I purchased a medium after first trying it at a store. The medium is perfect. It runs a little big which provides for layering but also allows for enough sleeve length where my arms are well protected.

Not like the former versions
4 October 2024

In no way am I trying to insult company NorthFace. I've been a customer for over 20 years. I have always praised their products. In my honest opinion, this new version isn't your best work. It feels more like a shell material this time around. I'm a big dude. 6'4 275lbs. I desire something more durable, like your previous version of the McMurdo. This one makes me feel like I need to be extra careful not to snag it on something every time I move. The Velcro seems so weak. I hope in the future, you'll recognize you had an awesome parka and revert back to the old model. I know with time comes change, but if it isn't broken...don't fix it.

OUTSTANDING! Came before winter storm.
16 January 2024

I’m 6’4” so the XL was perfect fit forMe. Arrived right before a massive Midwest winter storm last week. Almost too warm to use while shoveling and snow blowing. the fir hood blocked all the snow flying around. Next day it dropped to -10 and that’s when the coat showed its true colors. It’s Very warm for clearing the car and walking to work, walking the dog, or just being outside for a long time. I plan on taking it skiing and snowmobiling as it is relatively water proof and wind proof. Plus it’s very stylish and received over a dozen compliments. The outter part of the jacket is more durable then my $600 Mountain Hardware coat that my dog ripped with her paws. This jacket can take a beating. Issues with the order and shipping initially which was disappointing but ... MoreI’m 6’4” so the XL was perfect fit forMe. Arrived right before a massive Midwest winter storm last week. One and done.
8 January 2024

I bought the Men's McMurdo Parka to wear as a one-and-done jacket to throw on over my t-shirt when picking up kids from school or for when I just don't feel like layering. This Parka is very warm, waterproof and wind proof. All the pockets provide ample storage for my phone, keys, wallet ect. The hood fits my head well and being able to remove the fur is a nice feature. The sleeve length is fine and a medium fits me. However, It is a loose fitting parka. For reference I am 5'9 tall and I weigh 175 pounds with a big chest and arms. In conclusion, It's a big, warm, comfortable parka that is best suited for freezing temperatures below 32 degrees but is nice to have for those cold days that I just want to grab one coat and not dress in layers.

Surprisingly poor customer service from TNF
2 May 2024

I'm searching for a winter coat to keep me warm in Colorado winters. I bought TNF's McMurdo parka and other options from Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Jack Wolfskin, Outdoor Research, and Eddie Bauer. TNF is very clear that the McMurdo has 600-fill-power down, but when you're evaluating warmth, it's also very helpful to know the down-fill weight (meaning, how much of the 600-fill-power down is packet into the jacket). When I contacted them, literally every other company - no kidding, every single one - helpfully shared the fill weights for their jackets, but TNF refused, saying that info was "proprietary". That was a very disappointing, non-customer-focused answer from TNF. Eddie Bauer has a very similar-looking down parka to the McMurdo, but it has 650-fill-power down ... MoreI'm searching for a winter coat to keep me warm in Colorado winters. Too baggy. Returned
27 February 2023

I have a lot of puffers for hiking but wanted something super warm yet waterproof and windproof for commuting in wintery conditions. This parka checked all the boxes. However I was not expecting this coat to be so baggy. Both the sleeves and body of the coat feel oversized. I knew from reading reviews that it ran large so I purposely sized down to a small but it's still too big. even the sleeves and sleeve cuffs are goofy wide, making my hands look like little doll hands by sticking out. What was TNF thinking here? You pretty much have to use the Velcro cuff tabs to tighten them. Otherwise cold air will go right up your sleeve. This would be the ultimate winter parka if it just fit a little more snugly. Unfortunately though, I will be returning this coat. I have a lot of TNF gear from over the years and I have to say I've always liked the quality of their stuff until recently. This is the third thing in a row this year that I was disappointed with and ended up returning. Not thrilled with TNFs design and quality as of late. This stuff is too expensive to not be near perfect.

Very Warm, Best Value, Bit Loose
17 November 2022

I bought this from TNF Renewed. Had been looking for a deal but with what a great value they are, that never happens. I found the McMurdo by googling for "warmest jacket for sitting still." This and the one named after the northern birds that bring down planes were the highest recommended. However those are over $1,000 and aren't nearly as durable as TNF. The MSRP on this McMurdo is the highest of all my non-merino clothing. I'm glad I bit the bullet, because I'm cold-natured and had been suffering, particularly the last 2 winters after losing 100 lbs.Loves:1. Warmth. I've only tested this down to upper 30s, but was able to sit outside and not move with only a t-shirt underneath. It'll be in the 20s next week so I'll update (if possible) if that changes.2. ... MoreI bought this from TNF Renewed. Breathable. Despite being very warm when it's cold, I wore it inside at 68 and was comfortable with just the zip open. That said, I am very cold-natured and have my heat set to 74 in winter.3. Detachable hood fur. Could see it being useful when I'm visiting Canada, but in NC it just gets in my eyes.4. Large lined chest pockets for wet gloves.5. Value. As said above, MSRP is less than 1/3 of what I would've paid for the competitor.Dislikes:1. Exterior pockets (besides the chest ones) aren't lined with soft material, so when I'm not wearing gloves they aren't comfortable. However, none of the pockets are in a good position to rest your hands anyway (none are angled upwards or at the right position/level to rest your hands with your arms at a right angle) so I don't do this much.2. Fit isn't my favorite. It looks a little frumpy, but that is somewhat to be expected given the amount of insulation and at this price point. To be lighter, they'd probably need to use less higher-fill-power down, which would be more expensive. I'm usually a S or XS in most things (I have a runner's physique: 37" chest, 30" waist, 36" hips) and prefer a tight fit. I got a S and have a ton of space under if I'd want to layer. I'd prefer to have an option for an XS.3. Wish the Velcro sleeves were buttons. Dog hair attaches to the Velcro.Honestly apart from fit I'm really nit-picking. I'd definitely buy this again and have already recommended it to a friend who has a similar physique and cold nature.
