Ten years have passed since the fall of Troy. The surviving Greek warriors who destroyed that city have returned home. All except Odysseus, whose wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, await him. It is a clear, fresh translation that holds one interest. The language used allows a greater identification with the characters. The maps are helpful in forming a mental picture and the index of characters is one to which I keep referring. Then the size, printing and presentation of the hard copy makes it a pleasure to read.

This book is just beautiful. From the artwork on the cover to the format of Wilson's translation itself, it is a joy to read. For anyone looking for a very readable version of The Odyssey, I definitely recommend this version.
It is a clear, fresh translation that holds one interest. The language used allows a greater identification with the characters. The maps are helpful in forming a mental picture and the index of characters is one to which I keep referring. Then the size, printing and presentation of the hard copy makes it a pleasure to read.
I had read Emily Wilson's new translation of the Iliad and loved how she captured all of the different voices of the characters in the story. She has done it again in this magnificent translation of the Odyssey. Characters speak with their own individual voice. Worth the read, especially if you're a fan of the classics.
I was so excited to see this new translation of a favorite poem. The introduction must definitely be read for poem context and its place in history. The author uses everyday English, not an affected style. In the back of the book is a pronunciation guide and a summary of each chapter. She also explains some of the more unusual lines of the poem appearing in that chapter.
Its one of the original pieces of literature and a compelling story to be.
Emilly Wilson hit a Homer with her updated translation of The Odyssey. This is a fresh and fast-paced rendering of the timeless Greek classic, which makes it a perfect launching pad for beginners put off by the "standard" translations of the Odyssey.
