There are some things you simply cannot do if you aren't skilled enough. For example, you aren't going to be able to complete certain tasks if your skills of persuasion are lacking. Or your mission is going to be more difficult if you are poor at hacking. I love that the game has consequences for you shortcomings.Supernova mode is worth a try, as well. It definitely makes the game tougher, as it's supposed to do. You will have to make sure you eat, sleep, and drink. You can also be wounded with limb damage or concussions. Concussions will make you dumber until you sleep it off. Otherwise, your intelligence and dialogue will be affected. These are just a few things I love about the game. I could go on. But, if you love Fallout type games, I would recommend this one as well.

Talking to the other characters seems to take ten times longer than it should. It reminds me of reading through a Choose Your Own Adventure book from the past. People who buy shooter games probably do not want to spend huge chunks of time reading through conversations and logs. There are multiple endings depending on your decisions, but none of them, good, bad or otherwise seemed at all interesting. It appears that to have fun in combat, you need to play at a high difficult setting. If you play on normal, don't use the max of two companions or the teammates will take out most of the bad guys.I have other minor gripes on this game but I would recommend playing this game once if you don't have any other new games.

Great Pulpy Space Adventure!

Aside from being the Fallout-killer gamers have needed, the game also blends in flavors of Mass Effect and Bioshock - the outcome being a product that is incredibly immersive, but also somewhat shallow in some areas. My first and major gripe is an easy swipe at low hanging fruit: the load times, sweet Zeus are they long. At first I was glad they had some great art to stare at during the load screens, but by the end I wanted to never see them again. Minor gripe aside, what really cuts into the greatness at hand is basically one that can be blamed on something like budget, and that is the game becomes rather redundant certain areas: guns, even though they can be upgraded on multiple way, they do start to become junk-fodder for the inventory menu. Minor gripe aside, what really cuts into the greatness at hand is basically one that can be blamed on something like budget, and that is the game becomes rather redundant certain areas: guns, even though they can be upgraded on multiple way, they do start to become junk-fodder for the inventory menu. And speaking of inventory, I had a TON of it on a normal mode play through - I only used most of the consumable out of curiosity after not having touched them for almost the entire game. The same goes for ammo, armor and weapon upgrades - I hope Supernova mode remedies the general feeling of being overpowered. And lastly, as big as the game feels, and as much player decision is involved, at some point the veil starts to thin and show where the pathways converge. It is worth mentioning that the skill points can definitely change a persons game style and experience. Just don’t expect to be pulling of any no-killing stealth runs, as no matter what you’ll either be shooting or slicing down enemies to progress. Now onto some of the positives. From the get-go, no matter what console, the game looks beautiful. Graphics in detail, such as characters, can be somewhat tamed down from the usual AAA push, but it doesn’t detract attention in any way. Movement is fluid and feels much better than the jank that came with Fallout games - don’t get it wrong, there is still some jank, but not the annoying sort. Dialogue options are fun to play with, and are well worth exploring with almost all characters, most definitely the companions. Some companion stories give a bit more strings to latch onto, but all are still great. Exploring the multiple planets offers a variety of settings, each of them with their own personality and atmosphere. Overall, everything carries a great symbiosis between all of it’s gameplay/story systems. Side missions can be fetch-questish at times, but ultimately most are immersive and fun to take on.As a whole, the game has very little flaws, and where they do exist it’s mostly a matter of the game being a new IP with limitations - fortunately the creators are legendary enough to know where/how to apply the proper amount of experience into the size of game they had in mind. With Obsidian being acquired by MS, I can definitely see this becoming a franchise with bigger and more fruitful ideas, and the small flaws practically erased. The story was in vein with these sort of games, and while this one could’ve had a little more of everything, it succeeds in doing what it set out to do, if not better. I absolutely enjoyed this one, and think it’s fit for all sorts of players to take on, but it’s also clear that fans of Fallout (especially New Vegas) will dig what The Outer Worlds has to offer. I truly hope to see another entry that’s able to expand upon the ideas that are presented in this original.

Is The Outer Worlds the great return to RPGs we were all looking for? Not exactly. The game lets you invest in numerous skills and gives you a lot of ways to resolve conflict without firing a shot yourself (talking enemies down, intimidating them, hacking security systems to work for you, etc.), but some factors let it down a bit.For one thing, there are only three ammo types in the game, making it ludicrously easy to build up a huge stockpile of each type, which makes combat easier. The other point against it is the perk system isn't nearly as diverse as the one in New Vegas. Most of the perks are numbers based, boosting certain stats rather than offering up more interesting ways to play certain builds. But is this enough to say the game's bad? Absolutely not. ... MoreIs The Outer Worlds the great return to RPGs we were all looking for? Not exactly. The games got some phenomenally entertaining writing, the gameplay is still fun, and there are still a lot of potential builds to play with. Hell, I even managed to get through the entire final level on my first playthrough without firing a single shot. It's not perfect, but now that Obsidian have a new franchise of their own to work on, and hopefully a bit more money coming their way, I'm hopeful that the next game in this series will be even better.

Not Quite New Vegas 2
10 July 2020

I was very excited when I first heard that Obsidian was going to make another Fallout-like RPG. I was hoping they could top their masterpiece that is Fallout: New Vegas. However, when the day came that I could finally play it, I was kinda disappointed. Reflecting on the game, all I can recall is how mediocre it was. The gameplay wasn’t too innovative, the story wasn’t memorable, and the characters were forgettable. The game, to me, felt like an alien shooting simulator and not like the expansive New Vegas. With New Vegas, there were hundreds of ways to play the game and it all had impact. With Outer Worlds, the game felt like about 30 hours of doing nothing special. I loved New Vegas because of how memorable the game was. The factions, characters, weapons, and story elements in New Vegas are things I still recall when I talk about it with friends. I couldn’t do that with Outer Worlds. Outer Worlds isn’t a bad game, it just doesn’t have the charm that I and probably many others expected from a Obsidian game. If you want a decent RPG to kill some time for a week, I would recommend it. If you want a game to recapture the charm of the old Fallout games, I would skip Outer Worlds.

I bought this on the pedigree of the developer and their great "Fallout: New Vegas" game. Unfortunately, this game did not live up to my (admittedly high) expectations. While the locations were interesting and some characters engaging, it just felt small in terms of the world created. Exploration of some planets is very limited compared to what you would expect. Uneven difficulty spikes early on are frustrating. The story also seems somewhat rushed, especially towards the end. I believe this game had a lower budget and unfortunately, it shows.

Yes this game borrows heavily from the Fallout series and it's set in space. The comedy in the writing is also great and not annoying or childish like BL3. I love this version of VATs supremely better vs. the FO series. I just wish you could map VATs here to L1 instead of R1. Lastly, the orchestral soundtrack is ridiculously good and I find myself humming the melodies for days after! If you love the FO series and good RPG's, show this industry that you want more games that are like this vs. Bethesda turning their franchises into random loot, action games without souls because they are greedy: yuck!

At time of review I was around 10-13 hours into the game. I will not play the game any further.Story/World:Pros: Some of the characters might have turned out to be some of my favorite in video games if I played to the end of the game. Parvati had an impact on me (that is all I will say due to spoilers, but thank you, Obsidian). The dialogue is pretty good(and lots of choices) and humorous. Like the concept of corporation vs. the little man.Cons: I personally have never been a fan of 50's future deco/aesthetic. It's Fallout in space in many ways, and sometimes the dialogue can feel like it was ripped right out of Fallout 4. Environments kinda of look "meh" to me.Gameplay/Combat:Pros: Plenty of weapons to choose from in the time I played. Weapon damage tied to different skills. Your character may gain flaws(if you so choose), which can be humorous and ingenious, but gain a perk. Plenty of options for armor and weapons within the first few hours, that seemed like I started seeing the same things though by the time I quit, so not sure if the game will keep throwing new items at you as you progress. There is an option to upgrade gear, so if there is one you like the aesthetic of you may not have to sacrifice it for the sake of having better armor.Neutral: You can change your party members gear and choose what perks they gain(I can take it or leave it in games usually).Cons: This was main thing that killed the game for me, I absolutely hated combat. No matter how much tweaking I did in the options menu, my movement always felt off, the weapons never felt like there was no weight to them. The only time I can remember the controller vibrate was with one weapon. Balance in combat was lacking. I changed between Normal and Hard and could not tell the difference. Jumping between playing Apex Legends and this was jarring, and really emphasized the issues with combat(Yes, I understand they are different genres, and that can effect combat). The time dilation is their equivalent of VATS from Fallout, and Fallout does it so much better. Too many stats on the screen. I would get stuck on objects in the environment, rocks mostly.Menu/User Interface:Pros: Mostly intuitive.Cons: Besides combat, the menu also was a major issue for me. The writing of item descriptions is so tiny I was straining to read. The pop up box that brings up the item description blocks the view of other items near it, which frustrated me. Had to hold down X to break down for parts or use an item. I felt like I wasted a lot of time in the menu, and it was boring to look at.

The RPG we wanted Fallout 4 to be

Obsidian Entertainment essentially made Fallout without the Fallout license. It has the same tone as Bethesda's Fallout games despite the setting being wildly different, the gameplay feels similar yet more refined, and there is an added layer of polish that has been absent from this style of game for awhile.Buy this game if:-You enjoy Role Playing Games.-You are a fan of Fallout 3, 4, New Vegas, or even Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.-You want to see a game developed by masters of the genre.-You like quests with meaningful choices, dialogue with impact, and an atmosphere that is unmatched by modern games in the genre.-You want to support a developer who clearly deserves it.-You dislike abuse of power specifically on a corporate level.Do NOT buy this ... MoreObsidian Entertainment essentially made Fallout without the Fallout license. I say this as someone who has enjoyed Fallout 4 for ~1000 hours. Seriously, The Outer Worlds is a master class in game design and Obsidian deserves all praise they get. It isn't perfect, there are a few things that the game could use (grenades, third person mode, more Parvati, etc.) but the pros greatly outweigh the cons and I highly recommend it.*Actually, if you like corporate abuses of power then this game might even be for you. It's an RPG to the core and supports you making choices, thus you can be a corporate shill.
