The Quarry

First off I have to admit that I hate horror movies. They never were my thing. I'm the person who would shout out who I thought would die and how. They were either too campy or too obvious. It ruined the experience for me. But The Quarry is somehow both like a horror movie and not at all like one. And for some reason that makes it one my favorite games in recent memory. Choosing what the characters do and being able to affect the story makes the whole thing so much more enjoyable. I imagine if you like horror flicks then this probably has lots of references and tropes you'd love.

A solid successor to Until Dawn!

The Quarry revolves around 9 camp counselors who must do what they can in order to survive the unimaginable horror they will face during their last night at Hackett's Quarry. That is all I will share as far as the story goes as I do not want to spoil this game for anyone.The Quarry is a game I had my eye on ever since the first trailer dropped earlier this year. Some choices have minor consequences while others can have a significant impact on how the story unfolds. This can include who will live or die. This alone will keep you on the edge of your seat as your choices can make the story go in unexpected ways. On top of this, you have no way of reversing your choices unless you start your current playthrough from the very beginning. Needless to say, choose carefully.For the rest of this review, I will list my pros and cons of the game and go into some detail about what I have to say.Pros- Great cast who give memorable performances including the likes of David Arquette, Ted Raimi, Brenda Song, Ariel Winter, and Justice Smith just to name a few.- Graphics look incredible (I played the Xbox Series X version). From the lighting, environments, character models, and motion capture. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was a live action movie.- Some fun Easter eggs for all the horror movie lovers out there- While the gameplay is similar to Until Dawn, some changes were made to ensure better control during gameplay segments- Loading times are pretty quick (On Series X at least. I can't comment on the PC, PS5, PS4 or Xbox One versions)Cons- While the graphics look great, there is occasional texture pop in which can be distracting- $70 is a pretty steep price to pay (for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions). I personally didn't mind paying full price as I know I will get my money's worth but I can see why $70 would be too high for a lot of people. Wait until it drops to $50, which I feel is a little more reasonable- Some parts of the story do kind of drag a little longer than necessary- On my first playthrough there was no option to skip the end credits and the credits did go on for much longer than expected (I'm sure an update could potentially allow an option to skip it)Overall, if you enjoyed Until Dawn, I highly recommend it The Quarry!

Fun Adventure/Horror Game

I bought this game to have something for my oldest daughter and I to do together during the winter. We both enjoy horror movies and this game fit that genre. It functions like a "choose your own adventure" story where your interactions and decisions impact what happens next. It is pretty fun to play, although the "chapters" are short which leaves a bit more downtime in the action. All it in it is a good game at the price I paid.

Fun, but noticeably imperfect

Fun game. For a choice-based game, the consequences of many choices don't matter. It's the best and worst of Until Dawn, turned up. Characters are more engaging, it has better accessibility settings than many games, and it has several settings for play mode that make it easy to play with friends at home and online. The different endings encourage repeat plays, but the unskippable cut scenes and sometimes mid writing makes it tedious at times. Great horror movie-based game, limited replay

The Quarry on Xbox Series X is simply beautiful. It seems like you're watching a movie the graphics are so good. The voice acting is done very well also. The game is unique in that you're following a horror story where you decide the moves. The decisions are basic, trust them or don't, be judgmental or playful, etc. and there are long stretch's (maybe 3-5 minutes) where you're not doing anything. There are twists and turns in the plot and I was genuinely surprised on multiple occasions as the story unfolds. First run through took me maybe 16-19 hours. You can replay it after the first run through to see how different decisions play out but the first time is the best.I gave this game 4 stars because the first time played its great. I enjoyed this game more than I initially expected. Like other games from this developer, you're taken on an adventure as you get to decide the fate of the camp councilors of Hacket's Quarry. Sure, some of the in-game dialog can be a bit cheesy, but that's what makes each character stand out. I played this game with my younger brother, as the game assigns you specific counselors to take control of in it's multiplayer mode.Also, once you've reached one of the 180+ endings, you unlock a feature that allows you rewind certain choices and choose an alternate path; this is good if you're trying to make all of your characters survive the night. I was so excited to see the maker's behind Until Dawn were releasing a new story and with such an epic cast ensemble of cult/horror greats: Lance Henriksen, Grace Zabriski and David Arquette! I could hardly wait the two days it took me to do a quick revisit through Until Dawn to play it - and I feel that probably lessened my enjoyment of this game. It's a stand-alone story and not at all necessary to have played the first to enjoy this. In fact, I think that actually set me up with certain expectations of what this should be, to then be mildly disappointed.The story line was definitely satisfactory. I've played it twice now and was actually surprised at how such a seemingly insignificant variation took things in a very different and unexpected direction. Ultimately though, I just don't think it has the replay value as it's predecessor. It does, however, have a couple new and unique features that I don't want to spoil here.I'm glad I bought it...on sale.
