I did enjoy this book after knowing it since childhood. I passed it on to my sister who also remembered it. It is, of course, of an earlier time with some outdated themes but enjoyable nonetheless and perhaps a recent history lesson for younger readers. JS.

I purchased this as a gift for someone who enjoys E. Nesbit's works and wanted a nice hardcover edition of this book. I own other books in the Everyman Children's Library collection and they're beautiful, vintage-inspired hardcovers that are wonderful for collecting.

The writing style was really good with cliff hanger and suspense. My son found it too long and he found that it was repetitive with the descriptions.

Bought for my grandaughter as she was reading this for homework and she wanted to work between computer screen and a printed copy which she was able to do. A lovely old favourite in my eyes although I think the youngsters now don't find the language quite so easy.
This is a beautiful edition, well worth purchasing. The color pictures combined with the title immediately captured the attention of my train-loving nine-year-old. He balked a little at the long chapters, but quickly got over that as he became involved in the story. He loves it!
Bought these as a Christmas pressent for my niece and the physical quality of the books was excellent. Story wise, I loved them when I was young and so did my children when I read them to them. Would highly reccomend for the sort of 8-11 age when they're past picture books but maybe not ready for fully fledged modern teenage fiction.
We, as a family, were having a big outside meet-up, two weeks ago. I chose this for one of my granddaughters, aged 11. She is half-way through it and says that it is very absorbing. Can’t fault the price at £3. Together with one of The Works’appropriately titled notebooks at £2, all 5 of the “lovelies”; aged from 10-15, got a little reunion present, after 5 months of not seeing them. Excellent.
Every bit as touching as the 1970 film and surprisingly liked in the script . For a person who does not read books I enjoyed this over a weekend .
Many years ago I saw a movie of this book and wanted to read the book. and the book kept pace with the happenings. The characters were very believable It was logical & entertaining
The film is brilliant family viewing. I bought this book only to see how the film followed the book. It mostly does, there are changes of course which are acceptable. The book is a good read -the language is wonderful.
