So well written and very interesting plot. Practically read this within 3 sittings, one of my favourite novels to date. I highly recommend it and believe that it is highly deserving of tis accolade as a modern classic.

I am a little bit disappointed by this book. The characters were well fleshed out and had a good degree of nuances to them. They were introduced in the first quarter of the book where Tartt outlines small daily interactions that add wit and personality to them, which was good but got quite slow after a while. The elitist, classist, egocentric nature of the characters may be too pretentious for some but it is part of a key idea in the book: the dangers of romanticising classics. If you like dark academia you might enjoy this book for the vibes, characters and ideas rather than the plot which lacked mystery or complexity; basically a third of the plot development was from the main character being intoxicated, falling asleep and being woken up by someone at his door ... MoreI am a little bit disappointed by this book. Honestly, this book is like my favourite book to ever exist. I love the way Donna Tartt expresses each character, the descriptions of each character, the imagery, it's just so perfect, I wish it was turned into a movie.I would love to see the way Donna would work with the directors and producers to portray this book, but it's just so perfect I'm going to read it over and over again.
This book literally changed my life. I think about it every single day. It was immaculate. It has perfect vibes to read in the fall. Read this book, it is amazing
I had high hopes for this book and it honestly let me down. The entire thing was anticlimactic. The characters didn't have much of a personality and I felt that many IMPORTANT things were missed out on since the narrator often wasn't included in events, he was just told about them later. I gave the book two stars because I enjoyed the writing style, but the overall story didn't appeal to me.
As well as being a kind of crime thriller ( but not quite - it's really in a genre all of its own) and set in the time before mobile phones ruled our lives, this novel is a commentary on American undergraduate college life, American values, and the effects of alcohol and drug use on young people. It also provides tantalising glimpses into the study of ancient peoples and languages. An education in the classics is not really fashionable, but Tartt shows we are missing something when we dwell exclusively on the attractions of our technology-infatuated world. This book is about mind over matter and emotion, and shows the cost when we take that premise too far. Thought provoking!!
Absolutely thrilling. The author weaves the plotline in such a way that enthralls the reader while cleverly exposing revealing characteristics and mannerisms of the central characters. The Devil is in and out of the details! I particularly fancy her depiction of Henry's drug-addled, mentally vapid socialite mother whose mansion has an easily accessible medicine cabinet filled with potent barbiturates, amphetamines, and sedatives.
I'm not kidding, you will roll your eyes constantly about how pretentious and horrible they are, but you'd also destroy anyone who speaks poorly of them.
Very very good quality for a second hand book. It looks like new, you wouldn't even be able to tell that it's second hand! Super good price, much cheaper than buying it brand new and totally worth it. Arrived so quickly and in good conditions. Plus, The Secret History is the best book I've ever read, so I would definitely recommend!
