I bought this bag for an AT Smoky Mountain hike thru - I’m a woman and bought the man’s version, because REI didn’t have the women’s version I wanted. Ok, so let’s skip ahead…this bag did not keep me warm in the low 50s/high 40s overnight temps. I had to supplement with more clothes and a sleeping bag liner to keep warm. And I am a human furnace. I had a BA Rapide SL for an air mattress, so I should have been fine. It’s a super lightweight bag, which is great. The pad straps are a great idea, but are made for a regular width pad. I have a wide pad, because I turn like a rotisserie chicken when I sleep and need the foundation. I’m going to keep it for trips when forecasted temps are in the 50s/60s, but nothing less than that.

I bought this sleeping bag a month ago. After two utilizations, one sewing is already tearing and letting the feathers out. In addition, many feathers are coming off the bag through different places when stashing it.I did not buy the bag from the Therm-a-Rest website, but from an outdoor retail store, so I am apparently not eligible for a full refund. There is at least a 2-month delay for the assessment and repair or replacement, with no guarantee that they will decide the damage is eligible for the guarantee. I will not have a sleeping bag this summer. For an expensive and supposedly high-quality product, I am very disappointed.

I thought this bag looked great when I was shopping to replace my 25 year old bag. Lots of cool features and so on, and the low temperature rating would be perfect for shoulder-season camping in Minnesota.I've now used this bag on a handful of trips with temps ranging down to about 28. My experience is this bag simply isn't warm enough -- and the temperature rating is a joke. While I wasn't cold at 28, a 0-rated bag should be almost TOO warm at 28. Instead, I felt on the verge of chilly. There is no way this bag would keep me warm in the teens. I was wearing wool long underwear.I found the variable insulation to be more annoying than useful and the zipper baffle simply did not keep cold air out. I used a MSR Access 1 tent (winter rated). My sleep pad system was the NeoAir XTherm Sleeping Pad (R 6.9) combined with a Z Lite SOL Sleeping Pad (R 2.0), which provided a robust R 8.9. This sleeping pad system coupled with a 0F extreme rating should have proved sufficient. However, in spite of the aforementioned system and wearing merino wool base layer (socks, pants, shirt, and face covering), I woke up at 2am shivering. Good thing I brought with me a winter sleeping bag insert. Once deployed, I never slept better.While it advertises the ability “roll around” for those restless ... I used it from September through November in the Cascade Mountains in temperatures ranging from around 45F to 20F. It was far too warm at the upper temps, and only comfortable at the lower temps with all my additional clothing stuffed inside for extra insulation. The goldy locks temp is about freezing for me. Overall I am very happy with this bag. I get cold feet, and this bag has a built-in feature I really like which is an extra piece of fabric with insulation sewed in at the footbox. I definitely noticed that it helps keep my feet warmer. When it drops below freezing, I start stuffing all my extra clothes in with me, and that got me down to ... There is plenty of room for my shoulders, hips, and even just enough room to bend my knees to my chest with a slight bit of effort. Pulling the hood tight around my face works fine when I'm sleeping with my face towards the zipper, not so much when my face is towards the backside of the bag. The cord for tightening the hood routes around the back side of the bag so when you pull the hood taught it is difficult to keep your mouth/nose outside of the bag on the non-zippered side. I've woken up numerous times with the inside of my bag wet on that side because my mouth slipped inside the bag while I was asleep.Overall I very much like the bag, but I will be switching back to a quilt so that I can tuck the sides of the quilt tight against me in cold weather when I am on my side.

This is highly individual though, as everybody should know.Here are a few things that could be better, or a problem for others:1. The bag has less insulation on the back. You really need to either use the connector straps or sleep still on your back to preserve insulation throughout the night. (This is why the bag can be as light as it is, and I knew this before ordering, but it might not be clear to everybody).2. I wish there were longer connector strips. I have a wide pad (64cm) and it's obvious that the straps were designed for much slimmer pads. It would be nice to have longer straps. I would even be happy if I could order them.3. My wife has bought a Questar too (smaller size, but with more insulation) and the stuff- and packsacks are hard to distinguish (only the accent colors of the straps differ slightly). It would be easier for me if they would differ a bit more.

I actually prefer the way it feels to my actual bed at home that we have spent thousands on. The bag lofts up nice and thick and looks very inviting and actually makes you excited to snuggle down in it for sleep. In addition, the bag is very roomy. It doesn’t feel constricting like typical mummy bags. If you are a side sleeper or toss and turn I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU GET THE LONG VERSION of this bag even if you don’t need it for height. The main reason is that the long version of this bag is also wider in the foot box than the regular length. This provides quite a bit more comfort for those of ... Had I got the regular length it would have forced me to sleep with my head outside exposed and left no room in the foot box.TEMPERATURE RATING TEST:It’s October now and we recently had some cooler weather move in for a couple of days so I used it as an opportunity to test the bag and my new sleep pad. According to accuweather temps dipped down to 40*. I slept outside on our deck to test this bag. First I laid down a thin blanket to prevent any damage to my thermarest from splinters or such. Next was my thermarest neo-air xlite. Finally, this bag which is comfort rated to 32* when you wear appropriate base layers.As stated above, the temps supposedly dipped down to 40* and I chose to wear nothing but my boxer briefs as I figured if I stayed warm then I should have no problem staying warm to 32* with wool base layers as the rating suggest. I can confirm that the bag worked great. No issues whatsoever. I slept all night in the bag and never got cold. Starting off the night when it was around 48* I was actually too hot and had to unzip the bag. At about 7am when temps were at their low I stayed zipped inside but stayed comfortable.The biggest surprise to me was that I didn’t get cold feet. I don’t think I have ever slept outside and not got cold feet. And this is while wearing thick wool socks. Often 2 pair of them! In this sleeping bag I wore no socks at all and my feet stayed warm. This was a pleasant surprise. I now have no worries as winter progresses that this bag will do just fine in lower temps so long as I wear appropriate clothing as suggested.CONCLUSION:In conclusion, if you like to move around at night and don’t like a typical mummy bag this is the one you should get. It’s very roomy and never once did I feel confined. I rolled and tossed all over the place and stayed warm and cozy. I spent hours searching for something lighter and while you may find something a few ounces lighter than this bag it will cost twice as much and will be about a foot narrower in the foot box. I hope thermarest never stops making these bags. I want to save up for the 0* version now for those really cold nights. I now have a thermarest xlite pad, this thermarest sleeping bag, and a thermarest pillow and none of them have disappointed me. At this point I don’t think I would hesitate to buy anything thermarest offers if I needed it because it’s clear their gear is well thought out and quality made.
