Best travel backpack

I've been using the Thule Aion Backpack for a few weeks now. I purchased this for international travel and wanted a bag with all these features and the ability to fit under the plane seat. Currently I am using it for every day work travel and it has not disappointed. The backpack is comfortable, functional and I have no worries about it. I am glad I did the research and this bag has all the features that any traveler would want and the bonus of it being comfortable to carry. Hands down the best backpack I have purchased.

Was very excited to receive this bag for an upcoming overnight. The clamshell opening style is really convenient and makes it more luggage-like but there are two deficiencies with this bag that have me wondering. First, the zippers have nice long pulls but they get stuck around the top corners even when using care to make sure the tracks are aligned. It's eventually workable but not great to need to spend the additional time and care still. The most frustrating thing I've found with this bag is that the balance is way off. Both loaded and unloaded it falls forward when set down on its base. Sometimes bags need to be set down and there may not always be an object to carefully lean it against. Not sure if I received a dud but for the price I expected better weight ... MoreWas very excited to receive this bag for an upcoming overnight. The straps are comfortable and the multiple grab handles are really convenient. There are pockets everywhere inside to store and separate all your things. The expansion and rolling bag strap are nice touches as well. On the fence as to whether to keep looking or live with the things that could have been better here.

Decent bag, not thrilled with the straps

I travel for work often and was excited to come across this bag. The bag is okay, the straps are disappointing. Narrow enough to cut into my chest and shoulders when I have the bag filled (which is always because I only pack carry-on). The material inside the straps seems cheap and I can’t imagine it will hold up very long. The straps also attach to the bag about 2 inches below the top of the bag, and offer no way to snug the top of the bag closer to your shoulders. It ends up hanging low and leans out from the shoulder making the weight feel more awkward and not totally secure. There’s a cross-chest strap that helps, but doesn’t fix the issue.

Great Quality, Awesome Flexibility
18 May 2023

This is the best backpack for lugging around a computer everywhere you go. Very comfortable, the zippers feel awesome to use, the pockets are well placed. Space is great, I use it for a daily, I carry a few ergonomic items like a laptop stand, small bluetooth keyboard, mousepad and wrist rest and it all fits in nicely, and it has tons of space while not feeling too bulky or baggy. I will also use it when I travel, and it likely has enough space where I can bring this as an only bag on a high percentage of trips. Highly Reccomend

Great travel pack!

What a fantastic bag! I'm personally not big on multiple pockets and tons of organization - I kind of feel like pockets and clips and sleeves make a bag heavier/provide weak points/water ingress opportunities/harder to load - totally a personal thing though. I do need a little bit of organization and this bag seems to provide only slightly more than I'm looking for.I love the rubber divider and waterproof pocket. Sometimes you have some funky, dirty or wet stuff mid-adventure and laundering or drying it before you move on just isn't an option. I also love how it has a pocket to stow the divider away (and a place to hide that little gift for your beloved to give them later) The top- and back-loading options are fantastic for packing everything in. I also love how it has a pocket to stow the divider away (and a place to hide that little gift for your beloved to give them later) The top- and back-loading options are fantastic for packing everything in. I usually pack clothes with the back open, close up shop and use the top load access to compress the clothes down and put my food and a dopp kit on top for easy snacking and self care mid-journey.With the extension unzipped this bag is *huge*. My wife and I just spent a week in Arizona and we managed to cram everything we needed into the bag - I will say we travel extremely light though.I was worried about how well my oddly sized laptop would fit - it's a 16", but is "squarer" than most laptops. I'm pleased to say it fits just fine and I think a 17" laptop might barely fit - maybe. Some minor niggles:The back zipper pulls can be locked together to deter unauthorized entry, but the top-load zippers do not lock together - these both access the same compartment which renders the locking zipper pulls superfluous. I realize that a knife through the canvas makes even the most secure closure system useless, so this doesn't bother me too much.I really wish there was a strap retention system for the shoulder straps, or that the straps were removable. When I'm flying, I carry this bag on the airplane by the side handle, but the shoulder straps are always a mess and get caught on things occasionally in the narrow aisle.I'd love some MOLLE compatible strap ladders. I realize there aren't many secure places on this bag. Maybe on the side near the handle or on the shoulder straps? MOLLE systems aren't lightweight or sleek looking, but I think they could be put in a couple of spots without making the bag heavy or look like something the military would issue.

Perfect Balance

After hours upon hours of searching for the perfect travel backpack I think I found the perfect one. The thing I love most about this bag is that you get the best of both worlds with a bag that expands from 28L to 32L so you can bring it onboard as a personal item or choose to expand it if you prefer to do a single bag carry instead.I've tried the 30L size of other brands but they were just a little too bulky and most don't give you the ability to compress for a daily backpack if you didn't need the space. The fabric of the bag is a waxed canvas so it may not be for everyone, but personally I love the rugged look and it gives the bag a lot of character. I'm a big fan of the idea but the material feels like it could puncture or tear easily, but time will tell!

Well designed and built for work and travel
25 May 2023

I've been keeping my eye on this backpack for a while as a backpack that can work for both work and travel and so far I have been very impressed. I wanted something that was small enough to serve as my personal item, yet big enough to carry my laptop, work items, and lunch for those days when I go into the office. With this backpack I got the bonus of a well built (and rugged) exterior that should hold up to many years of use, well designed access points, and a reasonable number of grab points on the bag to allow me to grab the bag from the side, top, or by the straps (I have found that too many handles limit the ability to have an effective water bottle pocket and have a tendency to catch on things). The dual top handles are big enough to comfortably fit my hands, and while not overly padded, they are well designed with a soft touch material on one side (which contrasts nicely against the greenish-brown nutria color) so that they seem comfortable. They also serve as a handy way to hold the bag open while loading as well as an easy way to pick up the bag if the laptop panel is opened fully. I also like the expanding gusset as a nice way to add extra space (or to compress the packed material down) without resorting to straps that can get in the way of the zipper for the main compartment. As far as the color/material goes, I chose the Nutria, and I love it; it is kind of a slightly greenish-brown color (it looks much nicer than it sounds), and it should age nicely (particularly with the nature of the waxed canvas) and last a long time.In travel mode I wanted a backpack that can fit my CPAP, iPad, and headphones for easy access during the flight, and it had to have a luggage pass through to slide it on to my rolling carry on. So far, this backpack seems to meet all my needs. I love the way that the laptop storage completely unzips so that I can lay this thing out flat on the belt for the xray machine at the airport, and the stow away divider between the main compartment and the laptop area will be great as I won't even need to remove my CPAP from the bag when going through security. I like the way that the luggage pass through is aligned so that the bag is upright on top of my rolling luggage so that I can easily access stuff inside the bag without worrying about it spilling out or worrying about my water bottle coming out of the pocket. I also like the fact that the front of the bag is largely devoid of excess attachment points (besides the hidden daisy chain) so that there is less to snag when stowing under the seat in front of me on the plane and so that the backpack doesn't look like I just stepped off the trail. For work, I am easily able to fit my laptop, charger and other accessories in the well organized laptop section (I love that there is a sleeve for the laptop and a second one for the iPad, plus a zippered pocket for the charger and other accessories). The main compartment, while the opening is a bit snug, it is easy to get my lunch and all the other things I need for a day in the office both in and out of the compartment. I especially appreciate the absence of straps (my previous backpack was a Deuter Gigant, which is also a nice backpack, but I constantly found myself fighting with the compression straps when opening and closing the zippers on the main compartment). The front panel is also nicely laid out with just enough organization to fit the things I need, without having so much space that I end up overloading it. I am currently using the zippered pocket inside the front panel to carry small items, but that may chance as I use the backpack more, but it is easily accessible and looks like a good place to store my sunglasses when travelling.

This is my travel buddy! Especially when travelling through an airplane. I like that it has a lot of pockets. There’s a pocket for all the things you need while travelling. I like that it is made from 100% recycled fabrics and it is very well made and designed. It is expandable from 28L to 32L. All you need to do is open the zipper from side to side. It secures my 13 inches laptop inside as it is padded inside. I also like that it has a TPU divider that keeps item separated, secured and dry during travel. If I am trekking, hiking or simply travelling and it is raining, I make sure to put all my valuables and electronics inside the TPU divider to protect it from water. I highly recommend it.

not great straps

I’ve been using this bag for about two months now. I do not understand all these other glowing reviews.I travel for work often and only pack carry-on. The straps feel like they have a cheap cushion material inside, are not wide enough to effectively distribute the weight of the pack across a slightly wider track down my chest, and they don’t attach at the top-most part of the actual bag (they attach about 2 inches down), which makes a weighted bag tilt away from my shoulders to hang lower on my lumbar when I want the weight snugged closer in to my actual shoulders. It feels loose all the time. I greatly dislike that aspect of the bag. The inside of the pack itself is fine for the most part. The main complaint I have is with the material of the mesh pockets. I keep electronics cords wrapped in coils, bound with Velcro straps and the Velcro grabs the mesh, causing fuzzy patches to show up where it snags. I have to keep all cords relegated to one particular pouch in the front, top, zippered portion of the bag. It’s okay, but I want flexibility to put them wherever, and I will be able to, just after I change my current system for something different to accommodate this particular pack.I appreciate the several compartments throughout the bag and the full un-zip of the pack to lay it out practically flat. Zippers work well so far.
