My purpose is overlanding in a Jeep through the desert and forests. I was surprised how slick it was in the wind. I could not hear the wind or tell a difference in fuel economy. I wish it was not so flimsy. The latching mechanism was sticking requiring me to jiggle and bang on the cover for it to fully latch. It stayed pretty dry but does allow dust to infiltrate. Durable to small tree limbs. One of the plastic lid strikers broke off for no obvious reason and Thule warrantied the box. I guess for a thousand bucks at least they stand behind their warranty... Yakima and Thule are the main two players. I have preferred Thule.

I live in Alaska use this box primarily to transport skis. I've driven with the box loaded in all kinda of wild conditions including 75mph head and cross wind gusts while driving 60mph. To my genuine surprise, the box didn't move an inch on my Thule aeroblade crossbars. It is a breeze to take off and put back on. The locks and latches are secure and intuitive, and i've had no issue with freezing (though I did spray graphite lube in them). I do recommend re-torquing the mounting clamps after 50 miles or so by twisting them again until they click. The only thing that occasionally makes me worry about long term durability are the plastic struts that hold the box open. We have been using the Thule XT XL Cargo box for over a year, opening multiple times per day. With careful use, this is awesome cargo carrier. Highly recommended. It keeps everything dry. The trick is to balance the weight and shift things seeing where the larger areas of the box are , rather than jam down the lid. We place a yoga mat in the bottom so things don't slide around on the plastic bed. We probably should not load a much as we do into it, though it has been very forgiving of this and continues to work well. Thank you, Thule, you make adventuring easier!

HelloOutside of issues like a hinge replacement, and several airflow caps coming off, and a piece falling off behind the latch, I like it much better than the shorter box I replaced it with.Aside from the hinge, these are issues that do not impact performance, so I’m not too concerned.However, I had the other box about seven years, and it looked as new when I sold it.I have outfitted with Thule exclusively and overall am very pleased with the decision to do so.This box suits my present use perfectly.Keep up the good workDon

The guys in the shop said, "It's easy, it's not a problem," when I asked if it was difficult to secure and take off. We've used it on three transcontinental treks, Texas to CA and back, twice, and this summer on a trek to and from Austin to Atlanta. Thousands of miles. I don't want to jinx anything by saying how great it is. I'm old (OAF) and I can get it up on top of the rack and secure it all by myself. I'm kinda proud of that, but it's the "box" and its design that make it possible, not so much me. The clamps, the wheels to turn to tighten the clamps, the design is so simple and effective, does it take 5 minutes to install? Maybe less. My secret ingredient is packing blanket I borrowed from UHaul in 1987. I hang that on the side of our Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Close the top edge of the blanket in the door. Stand the Thule on its end, slide it straight up until it tilts toward the front of the vehicle, let it fall forward onto the roof racks. With the clamps loosened they're easily placed in their appropriate position once the box is opened up. Turn the dials (wheels) to secure. Test the tightness again. How simple is that? BOOM. It's been hotter than hell this summer in Austin (well not hotter than Palm Springs, but 100+ for 50 days straight is too damn hot), and I show my Thule not love, none whatsoever. It's out there in the side yard in the heat every day. Of course, back in February we had the BIG freeze for a week. 100,000 trees froze to death. People died. Roads were impassable. Folks had no water. Our Thule was out there in the side yard with a 1/4 inch layer of ice encasing the whole thing. Heat. Ice. No snakes inside, either. It's worth trekking around just to be able to use it.
I absolutely love this cargo box! I have been using it for almost 2 years now and still feel the same. It is always on one of my cars. I use it all the time for everything. I do not notice any wind noise from it. In fact, I think just my aero roof rails alone generate more noise than when the box is on the car. I have roof rails on both our cars and I find this box easy to move back and forth among the two cars. Very easy for 2 people, little harder for me alone, but doable Box latches/locks very well and I never feel my items are not secure. Sometimes not being able to remove the key while the box is unlocked can be annoying but I understand why it was designed that way, so even that is a great feature. I really like this Cargo box and am glad I went with the XL size. It opens from both sides which is really convenient and this thing definitely holds a lot! When it's on my vehicle (a 2021 Toyotal Highlander) there isn't any road noise or vibration from it being on the roof. I'm glad to have it for my annual cross-country drives. It is large though so it takes up a fair amount of space when it's not in use. I currently keep it on a couple of those plastic sawhorse things to keep it off the floor of the garage. In my last place a friend built kind of a bunk for it above some rustic wood shelving which worked out really well. Very happy with this purchase and glad I have it!
The Thule Motion XT XL Black Cargo Box is not overly heavy and is easily installed on our factory roof rack on our Toyota RAV 4. The box greatly increases our storage capacity. We have used it in heavy rain and it does not leak. Wind noise is not excessive on the HW. As neither of us are tall, we travel with a three-step ladder in the hatch to ease loading and unloading of the box. As with all boxes, beware of height restrictions in parking garages! Assume you will be parking outside, especially if your vehicle is tall to begin with.
After our first car camping trip with our toddler last year, a cargo box was high on our list since every bit of interior space was packed in Tetris style except for our 3 passenger seats to sit in. This box nicely holds all the camp chairs, sleeping bags and pads, tent, etc so that our cabin is clean and open again, with food and the cooler still in the trunk for easy access without having to unbury them!! Or being able to use that extra space to carry even more gear like our Burley bike trailer. Should be useful in winter too come ski season.Very easy to install on our factory bars (2017 Mazda CX-5). I bought it prepared to have to program the automatic lift gate to stop at a lower height, but to my surprise there’s just enough gap still so it can fully open.The overall styling is hard to beat (except for Thule’s Vector box, but that’s double the price…). The gloss finish is easily smudged by fingerprints but let’s be honest: it’s a roof box that’s going to get covered in bug splats during use anyways. I do notice the additional wind noise while driving but it’s not awful. I’ve had no issues with the durability of the material, but the REI staff member who helped me hoist it up at curbside did warn me to make sure one side of the box is FULLY latched before attempting to open the other side or it could crack, maybe that could explain some of the issues reported in previous reviews?Biggest negatives really are that it’s just a bit too tall for me to pull into the garage with it mounted so I have to remember to stop in the driveway, and we need to figure out a storage solution for the box when not in use, but neither of these is an issue with the box itself, just our own unique situation of house and vehicle.
The box works well for the most part, occasionally the latch could be a bit finicky when trying to shut close, but feels secure when it does.Apparently not that secure from theft though. Just had mine stolen as well and am now seeing other reports online. For the premium price of this model I am super disappointed they are evidently so easy to steal.Look, I get that thieves can ultimately defeat any system provided the tools and time. But apparently the claws that attach the box to the cross bars can be pried easily. I am not the only one that parks on my street with a roof box, but I was the only one with this specific roof box. Seems like the clamp mechanism that made it so easy to install has a drawback
