Wonderful lens. Built like a tank. Beautiful images with accurate colors. No distortion. It is heavy but there is a lot of glass inside.

I purchased this to replace the Nikon 50mm f1.8 that I'd been using over the last several years. I've never really felt the Nikon did justice to the images from my D850 and was looking for something more modern for today's large sensors.I just came back from a month long trip to Alaska and this was my primary lens as almost all of my images were of my year old grandson.Have to say I was quite happy with the results. The lens is fast, focuses quickly and the results seem quite sharp to me. It is a heavy beast, especially when paired the the D850, but I never really had any problems hand holding for all my shots.Another reason I went with this over other choices is I happened to catch a limited sale on B&H for this lens, resulting in a $300 price drop. It is probably the sharpest EF mount AF lens in the market along with Sigma 50/1.4 art lens, much better than the Canon EF 50mm lenses. The bokeh is great. At 950g it is really heavy for a 50mm/1.4 lens. When adapted to Fuji GFX body this lens can cover the 4433 image circle perfectly and the image quality is excellent even in the corner!

I have been looking for a lens that can fully resolve the 45.7 megapixels of my Nikon D850. I previously owned the Nikkor 50mm 1.4. The Nikkor 50mm 1.4 uses older lens technology and can't resolve the 45.7 megapixels of a D850. But this Tokina lens fully resolves the 45.7 megapixels of the Nikon D850 with excellent sharpness! Plus, the Tokina Opera 50mm 1.4 autofocuses correctly out of the box without having to fine tune the AF unlike the Sigma Art (the other lens I was considering). Also, the Tokina Opera is sharp wide open at f1.4. I am not having to stop the lens down to achieve sharp photos unlike my older Nikkor 50mm 1.4. And lastly, the bokeh is on the Opera is awesome!
This is the absolute finest piece of glass available for Nikon that I have found after having the Zeiss Otus 55mm and Nikkor 50mm 1.8s(on z6ii). Images from this simply stand out on my D4S. Good luck finding a sharper lens, my files at 16mp look outstanding and I feel no need to go to my higher resolution body. AF is fast and the bokeh is elite, buy it now and start seeing what pro glass is about. This is the Otus with AF and maybe a little CA wide open which can be cleaned.
I got this to compliment my Tamron SP 35mm 1.4, as this is basically the 50mm equivalent of that lens. Focus is quick, and surprisingly accurate for a non-native lens. Focus has been MORE accurate than the Tamron, even after I've adjusted it several times. I've used it on both my D810 and Z7ii w/FTZii and focus is consistent between both bodies. Stop reading this and buy it.
Of the available options for 50mm 1.4 on an EF mount, this is by far the best value. This lens is razor sharp in the middle even when wide open and the color reproduction and contrast are more than acceptable. The ZERO distortion is one the biggest surprises to me. The build quality is solid and it has a generous rubber gasket for weather sealing too. Focusing is fast and accurate right out of the box.The only draw back is that this lens is the heaviest of all 50mm 1.4 options. But honestly, it's worth the extra arm muscle. This is neck and neck with the Sigma art version, but I would give this the advantage because you don't have to fix any distortion in post processing. And both the Sigma and this Tokina blow away the decades old Canon 50mm 1.4.I am very happy ... MoreOf the available options for 50mm 1.4 on an EF mount, this is by far the best value. In hindsight I wish I was aware of this opera 50 1.4 sooner. I was so underwhelmed with every manufacturers fast 50mm. The tokina marries remarkable sharpness and showstopping character from the replicated vintage pentax recipe. This purchase doesn't come with an irritating request from the manufacturer to calibrate it on a ridiculous dock either. This actually renders the same color and bokeh if not better than my Nikon 85 1.4 g. The only difference is the tokina actually nails the focus every time and is worlds faster. If you've never experienced a professional lens with these features you are truly missing out on an exhilarating and pleasant experience.
I have been using the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 for 20 years. A couple years ago I got the 5Ds, the lens starts to show its imperfection. I finally decided to go for a better 50mm lens and I got this one. It does not disappoint me: pictures are extremely sharp, AF is very accurate, color is accurate and natural. My only comment (if not an complaint) is that the lens is quite heavy. However, it feels extremely nice and balanced in my hands.
This lens is a keeper for sure. Though I have only taken a few candid shots with it on my D810, it was enough for me to keep this one. It is a great lens for portraits. It is so very smooth and lacks any searching, as far as focusing. There is no lag in pressing and completing a shot. The quality of the lighting it renders is impressive. This lens tends to remind me of my Nikon 105mm f2.8g lens when I examine the results it renders. I have multiple quality lens that render good results, but this particular one is now my top pick. True, I have not had it long enough for extreme testing, but I feel confident in what it has shown me thus far to boast of its present proven potential. Now as far as physical aesthetics, its as beautiful and finely structured as it ... MoreThis lens is a keeper for sure. True, I have not had it long enough for extreme testing, but I feel confident in what it has shown me thus far to boast of its present proven potential. Now as far as physical aesthetics, its as beautiful and finely structured as it appears online. It is smooth to the touch, though seemingly more fingerprint prone. And eventhough several early reviewers have emphasized on the weight of this lens, I particularly dont find that this lens is overly heavy in the least bit. Sure, it has heftiness to itself, but that seems to assure me of its quality build and worth. After all, this lens costed me north of $1000 with taxes included. So I dont find the weight an issue but rather an assurance that the weight of the cost is equivalent to the quality of the product and the beautiful results that it renders. For with this lens, what is darkness when you have a 1.4 aperture. Darkness has no potential with this lens.In conclusion, I would have to admit that I would be hard pressed to find a more appealing lens that renders equally sharp photos with such great color and clarity and pleasing bokeh as this Opera machinery. I am well satisfied with this lens and will be using it as much as I possibly can. This is my second Tokina Opera lens, as I have the 16-28mm Opera as well. In my opinion, Tokina is on a win-win roll with the Opera series. Do your thang, Tokina! I got your back.
