Thanks to Xbox One's backward compatibility, you can relive the original Tomb Raider trilogy that was developed by Crystal Dynamics during the early to mid 2000s. Pop each of the discs in the XB1 and you'll be ready to go after the downloads are completed. I have fond memories of playing this with the previous generation (PS2), and despite the slightly outdated graphics, they play quite well, and are very enjoyable. Plus that fact that you get 3 full games in one package is an amazing bargain for any gamer. Highly recommended.

Its standard bearers haven't fared too well. The Spice Girls are no more, Tony Blair is no longer one of the most powerful men in the world, and the country is generally too busy trying to scrape a living to bother about being cool. However, one of Cool Britannia's standard bearers continues to beaver away, doing what she does as well as ever: Lara Croft. Indeed, in her latest starring vehicle, Tomb Raider Underworld, Lara has never looked or moved better. Since it's the first Tomb Raider game designed for next-generation consoles from the outset, you'd expect it to look good, and it doesn't disappoint. And for the first time, Lara's movements are governed by motion capture, rather than hand animation, so she moves in a more deliciously gymnastic fashion than ever. If anything, Lara's movement is the key aspect of Tomb Raider Underworld. Looking at the game dispassionately, it would appear to lack a killer innovation, something that adds a new twist to the franchise. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. The franchise is incredibly successful and changing it radically just for the sake of it could render it worthless. And when you get stuck into Tomb Raider Underworld, it swiftly becomes clear that it is designed to appeal to a generation of gamers surely now in their 30s who grew up with Tomb Raider and fell in love with Lara's attributes and attitude. It's easy to detect the hand of Toby Gard, Lara's originator, who is now back in the fold at the game's San Francisco-based developer, Crystal Dynamics. Gard and co have taken a back-to-basics approach, assessing Tomb Raider's best aspects, so in Underworld you get huge, engrossing and epic puzzles that involve much leaping, swinging and climbing from Lara, a strong storyline, the usual shooting of endangered animals and rival treasure hunters, and no more. The boss battles, which tended towards the fiddly and invariably involved tedious periods of button-bashing, have been abandoned, as have recent Tomb Raiders' occasional timed button-pressing. In Tomb Raider Underworld when, say, you're standing on a pillar and it starts to collapse, instead of having to push the X button and the A button at specified times, you just have to react and jump before plummeting to a rag-doll physics demise. Tomb Raider Underworld always feels more logical than its predecessors. There are new aspects to the game, which do impinge on gameplay. The first level, in the Mediterranean, for example, has Lara leaping off her gin-palace with, for the first time, an aqualung, before solving a puzzle that takes place entirely underwater. If anything would strike a chord with Lara fans, it's that aqualung. We've all caused her to drown agonisingly in the past through inept underwater manoeuvring. For the first time, too, she can free-climb (although only on visually obvious areas studded with hand-holds), and she can stand on all but the narrowest ledges. All things that in Tomb Raiders of yore, Lara should have been able to do but couldn't. The shooting engine has been mildly tweaked so that now, as you kill enemies, Lara has an adrenalin meter that fills up; clicking the right stick with an enemy targeted brings about a slow-motion period during which her shots also do extra damage. With full adrenaline, you can also set up a head-shot by pressing X in proximity to an enemy. The net effect is a sho

Poised for greatness, but slips off a wet ledge

Underworld is poised for greatness, but with yet another new graphics engine developed especially for the game, fresh with the latest bugs, it presents the gamer with yet another bag of niggles. The character animation is better than before, indeed it is excellent and you have to see it to believe it, but Lara has forgotten how to walk or creep. The best she can do is run in slow motion, or at least that's what it looks like to me. Perhaps walking was not in Heidi's contract ... this practically forces me to run around everywhere, giving me no time to really absorb the fantastic artwork and impressive scenery, and possibly as a result I discover that the puzzles require no thought whatsoever. If you can press it, push it, switch it, rotate it or climb it - do it. You don't need to know why, you don't need to examine the mechanism. Long gone are the days where you need a piece of paper to write down clues or figure out how to solve puzzles. I didn't get stuck once playing this game. This was the most disappointing aspect of the release. Despite promises of non-linear gameplay and while the graphics are generally superb (with the few usual bugs such as Lara floating in mid-air in some camera angles), the sound effects and music heart-pounding, and while the story sets up the adventure excellently - the main reason we keep coming back to Tomb Raider is for the puzzles. In Underworld, they are simply far too easy to solve by anyone's measure. The only real genuine puzzle in the game is why, if Crystal Dynamics focused so much on the WCLD (What Could Lara Do?) philosophy, why did they fail on that point so catastrophically - to the point where Lara still can't jump onto ledges that are only a foot above her head if the game developer hasn't thought about making the ledge "grabbable", and she still jumps off to her death in stupid directions when that's clearly not the direction in which you intended for her to die! The controls continue to be the most troublesome aspect of the most recent Lara adventures, when the puzzles themselves ought to pose the greatest challenges. Another major disappointment for me is that exploration is not encouraged. Except to find a limited variation of pick-ups and a few bonuses which unlock some rather uninspiring extras, the game is in fact as linear as they come. And with the demise of Croft Manor, there is no escape to Lara's house to take a break from the bats of Bhogavati to practise your pole-dancing skills. However, that should not put you off buying this game. I've said it before I'll say it again, there is no other game like it on the market. No self-respecting gamer would miss buying Tomb Raider Underworld. It is a marvel to behold, we only wish the developers would go back to basics and create a game that is primarily designed to exercise the grey matter and less of the adrenaline ...

As we all know, Lara Croft made a huge splash back in the mid-90s on the original Sony Playstation. She was kick ass, explored exotic locations, and uncovered the worlds most deepest secrets. A lot of platforming is involved: shimmying across ledges, jumping from pillar to pillar, and navigating around booby traps. There's also a fair bit of puzzle solving those pesky ancients always seem to confound our heroine with. There's also some light combat which sees you fight anything from mercenaries to Sumatran tigers.Essentially, this is old-school Tomb Raider at its best, which will provide a change of pace from anyone overwhelmed with all the shooting games this generation. With beautiful graphics, exotic vistas, and a worldwide mystery to unfold (play this before 2012!), Tomb Raider will take you on your armchair O.E with a story even Dan Brown would find intriguing.

This Tomb Raider really is the best so far there are dozens of new feature like being able to point Lara's two guns in different directions a host of new jumping ablities and Lara now moves and acts mutch more like a real person. The enviroments Tomb Raiders are famous for return but on a brand new level through out the game you'll go to Thailand, the Artic circle and mayan underworld to name just some the enviroments are understanding visually and are the largest seen in any tomb raider to date. The game play is a mixture of action, jumping and puzzel solving and really offers a good mixture of them all its also very multilayerd meaning theres more than one way to do things. Also a vast weather grid as been placed allowing for rain to make areas slippery and create mud slides it all that more realistic. The story is brillantly told and intresting and your'll often find your self getting mixtured up in it. A host of characters return like Natla from Aniverrsary/ Tomb Raider 1 but i don't want to give the plot away to mutch. Otherall if your a tomb raider fan you cant afford to miss this adventure and even if your not is still somthing you shouldn't pass up on experincing. Sound - 10 Classic tomb raider music adds atmosphere to any surronding Graphics - 10 The best in Tomb raiders history Gameplay - 10 May take time to learn all the new moves but its worth it Otherall - 30/30 The best Tomb Raider ever i don't know if they'll be able to beat this quality any time soon.

The best Tomb Raider yet!

I've played although not necessarily completed every Tomb Raider game so far. This entry is number 8 in the series..... so is Lara beginning to show her age?Underworld is a continuation of the story from the previous game Legend but the game provides you with a short movie re-capping events from Legend should you wish to view it. The first thing that strikes you about Underworld are the graphics, Tomb Raider has never looked better and the environments look absolutely gorgeous, its a joy to explore them. Lara is also beautifully animated and has a few new moves. It's still just as much fun as ever to scale large structures and hang precariously from ledges. The puzzles are perhaps a little too easy so you'll continually make forward progress without getting stuck ... MoreI've played although not necessarily completed every Tomb Raider game so far. The puzzles are perhaps a little too easy so you'll continually make forward progress without getting stuck for too long. I found the storyline interesting but perhaps the ending wasn't quite up to the epic finale that the rest of the game had promised. You might think differently.Underworld is not without its problems that have persisted throughout the series. There are some clipping issues and I got caught up in the floor several times, unable to move at first but always able to extract myself eventually. The camera sometimes throws a fit and swings around wildly or offers an atrocious view of the action. The mouse will move the camera but I still found in some situations that it was impossible to always get an ideal angle. I've never been much of a fan of combat in the Tomb Raider games as it has always been implemented poorly and Underworld is no different. You get to choose from a small selection of weapons at the beginning of a new location but I just used my pistols with their unlimited ammo throughout the entire game (except the very end when you receive a special weapon). That combined with the unlimited lives you are given is all that is required.I loved Underworld, it has a number of 'wow' moments when you stop playing the game and just admire the stunning scenery. It's still immensely satisfying jumping, swimming and swinging your way through ancient ruins. Underworld is an absolute must have for fans and would have gotten 5 stars if it weren't for the negatives I mentioned above that became too intrusive at times to ignore.

[Rewarded Review] Run... Run Away!

I love the tomb raider series and have been playing for many years. So when I recently bought wii and saw TR for wii I was very excited. I got the game while visiting my mom - so I couldn't play right away, instead I read the game insert. The controls looked a little complicated at first, but they actually flow pretty well. The game starts out in a underwater part, which I personally don't love.. But whatever. I happily got to the end of this level - and the game did a cut scene to a little movie and then LOCKED UP... Forcing me to re-do everything from the beginning. I angrily finished the level all over and then held my breath hoping it would proceed to the next - it did..I got through all that and to the next level - and at the end of this level - I couldn't ... MoreI love the tomb raider series and have been playing for many years. I angrily finished the level all over and then held my breath hoping it would proceed to the next - it did..I got through all that and to the next level - and at the end of this level - I couldn't find my way out.. I looked and I looked and then I cheated. I went online and looked for a walkthrough - only to find that there is a BUG WITH THE GAME - if you find and pick up one of the secrets at the beginning of the Thailand level - the switch you need to get out disappears.. At this time, I didn't realize there were manual saves options - so I was forced to start ALL OVER FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AGAIN!So - I swim through the underwater level, run all over Thailand, skipping the secret (which I was so proud to have found) and sure enough.... the switch appeared... Still not aware of the manual save feature - I work my way thru to the end of Thailand the game flips to another cut scene - and then LOCKS THE STUFF up...At this point - I search all over the web and find a downloadable save game and load that on to my wii so I can pick up where I rightfully should be.Ok - no more bugs or lockups YET - but I haven't finished the game yet, but I seem to be close, which is also kind of a let down, it seems it's pretty short. I'm saving OFTEN now.Couple other things, while seeking some help online, specifically youtube and watching walkthroughs rather than reading them - it seems like the xbox and PC versions of this game have a lot more enemies to fight - where as wii, poor Lara gets a little action starved. Also - the same issue that I had in an older TR game for xbox, the cut scenes are great, but Lara's voice is ALWAYS drowned out by the mood music... Fortunately wii has a subtitles option!
