Attractive shoe that loses the side of sole water vents of the racer 1. I liked the vents on the racer 1, which were below feet, these racer 2 vent thru mesh fabric which allows water to sit below feet. I have not tested in wet hiking environments yet, so we shall see how these dry below feet on the trail compared to Racer 1. Comfortable of course, the mega grip soles are the show here for me, I love them, they are well reviewed elsewhere. Matter of taste but I am a big fan of the thin minimalist tongue, dries fast, light and does not move around. I have never found big padded tongues to be anything but fall apart,If I reach for a complaint or 2 for the shoes it might be the "roomy toe box" feature. I think an extra day spent on a redesign could make wearing Topo gaiters really nice. I wear them almost 100% of my hikes and find other brands have much better function.Great shoes, with long life these will be hard to move on from ever.

Topo, the shoe is amazing. Please please please do something about those spongy, water-absorbing insoles. The cushion level on them is great, but unless the shoes never experience temps above 60F, those insoles are so porous on the underside they are literal sponges and hold water and squish.Maybe a type of coating on them to keep them sealed or mostly watertight? It isn't even in long runs, just 4 miles in hot weather, and those insoles soak up so much water I can wring them out.Amazing job on the shoes themselves though! A huge fan of the eyelets on the tongue to hold it in place. I know some athletes had issues with the toe rubbing the top of the shoes but I never had that issue. Solid shoe! Just really really think the insoles need some major changes.

I bought these several weeks ago, to use mostly on the treadmill and hiking, but also as an all around walking sneaker due to the extra heel cushion and to get a comfy break from my zero drop Lone Peaks. I love both pairs of shoes and can give an experienced opinion of the fit. The LPs are roomy, light and playful whereas the Mtn Racer 2s are more fitted, structural and solid. I have wide feet and when I first saw the Topos I didn't think they looked wide enough. The laces are spaced wide giving the impression of a narrow shoe. But after wearing them twice they had broken in and the fit is excellent. I especially like the mid fit and tongue and rim of the shoe which feels snug and supportive like a neoprene sock without ever feeling tight. I'm now a permenant fan. ... MoreI bought these several weeks ago, to use mostly on the treadmill and hiking, but also as an all around walking sneaker due to the extra heel cushion and to get a comfy break from my zero drop Lone Peaks. Both shoes have their pros and cons, I like working out in both but enjoy the zero drop of the LPs and then coming home and putting on the Topos almost like a recovery shoe. The MRs cushion is firmer also, sometimes the LPs get too marshmellowy and I enjoy the rigidity and structure to take all the effort away from my feet so they can truly feel comfortable and relaxed.

I've put some miles on these now after also using the original Mtn Racer. The new ZipFoam really makes a huge difference, and is a great foam that is more cushy, but has a solid rebound so it doesn't feel all squishy. Durability so far has been good. While I preferred the originals upper material, this new one has been a bit more breathable, tho at the cost of allowing more trail ash as grit thru into my socks. The MegaGrip outsold is the best I've ever worn, in both wet and dry.My only wish for improvement is to add a little bit more padding at the top of the tongue. When I lace them up tight to get a snug fit, the laces there cut into the top of my instep a bit more than I would like.Other than that, I really wish Topo would offer these in a understated dark ... MoreI've put some miles on these now after also using the original Mtn Racer. It'd be nice to wear them on travel trips without a bunch of neon nonsense standing out. And offer the 12.5 in all colors as well.
I have struggled for a while to find a trail shoe that is stable (I over-pronate and wear orthotics), wide in the toebox, neat at the heel and generally rugged enough to cope with mountains, trails, beaches and the odd stretch of tarmac. After a bit of searching I came across the Mtn Racer 2 which seemed to offer what I needed. So far they seem to be living up to my expectations. They are not perfect but I have now run around 60 miles in them (including one 20 miler) and the pro's far out weigh the cons.Bad stuff first (and this is purely from my perspective) ...The tongue is very thin and and as such you can feel the laces across the top of your feet. It's not enough to be a huge problem but it's a bit odd for shoes that are priced at the top end of market.I am finding it difficult to get the shoes laced in a way that keeps the heel nice and snug without having the laces pulled really tight (not good). On longer runs I have found myself adjusting the laces a couple of times.Whilst the heel has a low external cup I would have preferred to have a more traditional solid internal heel cup. For me it makes for a more secure and supported feeling.Price - Great shoes but a bit pricey. I will wait and see how long they last though, it may be that the 'cost per mile' works out to be better than other shoes I have owned and they turn out to be worth every penny. The uppers are very light, the material looks pretty tough but at this stage not sure how well they will stand up to sharp rocks and stones. Open minded though and time will tell. Related to this (but a totally personal thing) I prefer a more substantial toe bumper, something a bit more protective. They have an OK bumper but something a bit more '4x4' would be better. Not a problem just an observation but I did find I had to go for a half size down from my normal shoe size, but appreciate that may just be because in the past I was buying a slightly larger size to gain a bit of extra width in the toe box.Right now the good stuff...The outsoles are great. I have run on the road, grass, trails, mountain tracks, sand, and coastal rocks and they have coped with everything. I have not been able to try them in really muddy conditions yet but they have coped well with the small sections of mud I have had to run through. I am pretty confident they will perform well, so no concerns at all in this area. The support seems pretty good. Although these aren't 'proper' support shoes they do have a tri-density mid sole, with a bit of posting and a nice broad base with a totally flat outsole. So far they have felt really supportive. Not sure I would run huge distances on the road with them (and I wouldn't but them for that) but the short sections I have done have felt fine. The fit is pretty good. The wide toebox is a revelation (no more 'burning' toes) it may not suit everyone but if your feet start to feel 'cramped' after a few miles these could be the shoes for you. The low drop design (5mm) hasn't been an issue and I have 'migrated' with out any problems. Overall they really comfortable and I was able to complete a 10 mile run in them straight out of the box. I didn't plan to run that far but they felt so good I just bashed on.Cushioning is nice, not too bouncey but enough to feel good underfoot without loosing feedback from the trail.I mentioned earlier these are quite expensive but the build quality is great. My usual preference is for more sedate colours so these are a bit of a departure but I really like the look of them and, unusually, I have had several people comment on how good they look.So in conclusion, really pleased with these shoes. It's early days but they are performing well.
These are the comfiest shoes I have ever had , this is my second pair . I have had 2 operations on my L foot and find it really hard to get something to actually fit my foot and then be comfortable as well . I don’t run , but I walk miles and miles and my foot is in the best pain level it can be after 10-15 miles . Wide , comfortable and flexible with good grip ideal for any terrain , the only problem is they are not even slightly damp proof , any moisture at all and you get wet socks , but it is easy to put up with. . Come out lovely from the washing machine too ! We’ll recommend if you have wide feet / bunions
The original Mtn Racer was my favorite trail shoe of all time, so the second version didn't have a lot to improve on in my opinion. Unfortunately though, this version doesn't quite do it for me. Still a good shoe, but no longer my favorite, and I am especially hesitant about grabbing them for my long, technical runs.My biggest issues:1) I'm struggling to get a good fit in the forefoot. On very technical terrain the new mesh just feels sloppier and I've been twisting my ankles from time to time. This used to be a common occurrence when I wore *ltras, and it's the reason I switched to topos in the first place. The original mountain racer always felt snug and secure, and still left me with plenty of wiggle room.2) When I tighten the laces to try and minimize the ... MoreThe original Mtn Racer was my favorite trail shoe of all time, so the second version didn't have a lot to improve on in my opinion. This used to be a common occurrence when I wore *ltras, and it's the reason I switched to topos in the first place. The original mountain racer always felt snug and secure, and still left me with plenty of wiggle room.2) When I tighten the laces to try and minimize the sloppiness of the forefoot, they bite into the tops of my feet. For the most part, I don't really feel it, but on sustained, steep, technical downhills it can be quite painful. I find myself constantly trying to adjust the fit until I get a happy medium where my feet are locked down, but it's not painful.3) I'm a bit nervous about the durability of the new mesh material. All that sloppy "drift" in the forefoot is putting added stress on the upper, and I fear that will eventually lead to blowouts. With ~100 miles on the shoe so far, that doesn't seem to be happening yet, so I really have no evidence to support this other than past experiences with *ltras.4) Always a minor consideration, but the colors are horrid. On races and adventure runs I don't like to be too flashy -- I understand this is the trend, but I'd love a more toned-down color scheme. The original red/yellow, and the new mustard color just doesn't do it for me. Total personal preference, but what's wrong with subtle blues and greens or a minimalist design?
After 25 years of trail running, racing, training, and long distance hiking using all major brands of high performance trail shoes and hiking boots. After being displeased in at least one way or another with most all other brands I found Topo. I have since worn out 4 pair of the MTN Racer 2 and recently ordered my 5th. At one point during the 4 shoes and thousands of miles I had to ask for assistance with a shoe and Topo proved that their customer service is as exceptional as their shoes. The people I spoke with were all very helpful, and made the process so easy. These are the best hard use high mileage trail footwear I have found. I am a customer for life. I tell everyone about my Topo's! #sweepstakes
I absolutely love the wrap and fit of this shoe. The MTN Racer 2 does an exceptional job of providing incredible wrapping around the ankle pocket and forefoot area while leaving *just enough* room in the toe box where I don't feel cramped nor like I'm all sloppy. I wouldn't say that I have bony protrusions on my heals, but they're definitely a little pronounced. That being said, I don't ever feel them while running in these shoes (I do in other brands) and can vouch that the materials topo used in the heel pocket are superior... I HATE other brands' cheap materials that rip/shred after 50-100 miles. Topo took the time to make sure the the shoe (inside and out) will weather well through the miles of use and abuse. The laces are rock solid and hold a knot well. ... MoreI absolutely love the wrap and fit of this shoe. Traction is incredible - I'm a Pacific Northwest runner (cough cough rain / rocks / roots cough cough) and have been very pleased with the confident foot strikes as I'm rambling through the woods.
I was loyal to a certain company of "foot-shaped" shoes for years. Had that company stayed true to their original ideas, I'd have never discovered Topo. Topo stepped in and filled the gap that the 'other' company had -- well -- done away with. That is, Topo is truly a foot shaped shoe. Further, the cushion on this shoe is like none I have ever experienced. I've got 150 miles on these and the cushion still feel like new. The uppers are strong, the midsole is still soft, and the Vibram outsole is tough as nails and sticky as taffy. This is the best shoe I've run in - ever. So, Topo, please don't feel the pressure to change too frequently. It's ok with me if you just change the colors from year-to-year, but your formula works. So, if you keep this color, that'd be cool also.I've already purchased multiple pairs of these shoes, so I should be good for a while. Try this shoe.
