I plugged this into a generic powered USB3 hub and WIN10 recognized it immediatly and assigned a drive letter. All the file transfers were fast, the drive was quiet and it remained relatively cool. A deal breaker for me is that you must install the security software onto any computer you are attempting to use the drive on when it is protected. It does leave a small 126MB readable portion that has the install file which makes it easy to do.....I just don't like the idea of installing software on other people's computers and being a portable drive that could happen often. Meh, just keep that in mind should you want to use it. It did function as intended and kept the data hidden until the password was provided. I was able to format the drive and return it to it's original (normal) unlocked state. So, while I would not use the software provided, the drive is great and I definitely would recommend it. Fast transfer speeds, clean stylish looks with a choice of several colors....what's not to like? Other than that stupid Micro-B connector that is! You know Toshiba, I may have to replace the cable someday or want to buy a longer one. Not that "A to Micro-B" cables are impossible to find but they are not on the counter of most convenience stores either, and who knows how what the case will be three years from now. I did not take an egg away though because Micro-B is still a durable connector. (FYI, Newegg Item#: 9SIA4M54WB7831 is a 6ft long cord that should work with this if you need something longer than the 20in one that comes with this.)

Of course I can use a 3rd partys memory - but this can be more structured and isn't too cumbersome to take with you on another PC. You can store just as you would a USB flash drive or as another hard drive which it is of course. You don't need to have the contents password protected - but its easy to do. Great piece of kit and cheaper than more semiconductor (flash) memory with this capacity

Drive performs well for transferring and backing up files. USB 3.0 interface should be used to get the best performance. I transferred an 18GB file in 2 min 6 sec. If nothing else, you should have an external backup of your system drive if your operating system is running on an SSD. I have external full drive backups of both my systems running SSD as the main OS drive. I have had one fail and restoring the backup image is painless and saves you hours/days of time that it takes to reload Windows and Software. I have full disk images of the SSDs on an external drive that is only used to backup and restore the system if the SSD fails. The drive is not used so it could sit for 20 years and I still have a viable backup to restore (although the operating system will be obsolete by then).

It reads and writes at average speeds stated in other reviews on my 2011-v3 i7 system. I typically see 150 on writes give or take I plan on using it to offload my camera pics while traveling to keep my laptop drive clear. It took a week of being the write target drive on my WMC rig without fault. Never got noticeably warm either. Hard drives are quite reliable these days. I can’t recall the last time I had major data angst Now my raid array of five 47 GB 5.25 full height drives that draws over 300 watts is now 15 years old. I don’t have the heart to junk it, it cost a small fortune in the day of 3.5 inch sony disks. I copied all the pics from it to this little jem put it in my pocket and drove over to moms. Try that with 80 pounds of hard drive, That hold a tenth of the data good drive with a better warranty at a fair price five eggs even with the various complaints. You buy this Toshiba 2TB drive to store data, not to get some half baked software.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother to use the free Toshiba backup or encryption software. Windows and OSX both have decent backup and disk encryption utilities that I would steer you towards since they're native to the OS and have better online support and documentation should you run into problems. Comes pre-formatted to NTFS (which is good for Windows users), but it's easy enough to reformat if you have a Mac. I copied and pasted a bunch of different filetypes and sizes to see what kind of transfer speed you'll get in real life, day-to-day use operations. I averaged about 127 MB/s write speed and 137 MB/s read speed when copying movie files to/from the drive. Not too shabby, and good enough for just about any normal use I'd say. Transfer speeds will be slower with smaller multiple files. Comes with a two-year warranty. This is my first Toshiba drive, so I can't vouch for the lifetime of their hardware. Because of this, I'd recommend checking out other reviews on Newegg for Toshiba drives to determine how likely this thing is to break after it hits the two-year mark. Overall, this is a good drive that delivers on everything you'd be looking for. It works well, and I've had no problems in the admittedly short time I've had it so far. If this checks the boxes on everything you want, I'd recommend buying it.

If disaster strikes, whether it be boot drive failure or some nasty malware or ransomware, you can use the System Image backup to restore Windows or another operating system. (In some situations you may also need a Windows Repair Disc which you make separately.) For several years we've been using a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB portable HDD at home. Can only hope this Toshiba model proves to be as rugged and reliable as the WD. Time will tell!

Just another drive in this segment

I've been using this drive for about a month now. There's nothing that really sets this drive apart from the competition in this segment. The internal drive is a Toshiba MQ04UBB200, which is a basic 5400RPM drive. And that's fine. You wouldn't likely get a whole lot more performance from a faster drive on the USB3 bus, but you would get a lot more heat, which is generally considered "bad". The 2yr warranty seems about average for this market segment. The backup software is, as noted, usable but exceptionally basic. You can only schedule one type of backup based on frequency: Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly. There's no option for encryption, but that's not really critical at this price point. Based on my testing, it looks like the software does differential backups, so you don't need to worry about each backup size ballooning up. There isn't any way to add notes to your backup, so if you are looking for a particular version of a file, your only restore options are by date. After that, you are at least given the option to choose a different restore folder, so if you want to compare contents, you can. If you choose to restore to the same folder where content already exists, it will prompt you with the the option to "overwrite the existing file" or "skip it". It does create a fairly basic text file of it's operations, so if you were so inclined to dig a little deeper, you can. But again..."Very basic" are the keywords with this software. The software backs up the data to a proprietary file format, so there's no way to access the data in the backups without the software. Depending on your sense of security, that may or may not be a good thing. Realistically though, if you are that concerned with the backup/restore functionality, you probably already have a dedicated backup software solution. For me, this drive will simply be used as additional offline storage for non-critical data- much like my CD-RWs that have been collecting dust for the past 15 years. 4 eggs for this unit. It does what it says with the smallest pinch extra. But nothing to make it really stand out in a crowded space.

Drive must also be reformatted to be fully functional with MAC (Relatively easy to do but again not as advertised). Not worth the money. Officeworks you're usually much better than this.

I took this drive for the review, had it formatted, immediately copied data to it and had to deploy it in a work environment for a media heavy convention two days later after receiving it. The drive backed up all data and handled all transfers between machines without a hitch, as expected. In terms of pricing, you can spend roughly $10 more and get a 2 TB version so why not? HDDs at these sizes are now, and have been, commodity computing products for some time, and I’d wager a price closer to $40 would be better. I don’t know once I fill the drive with more data as to if there will be any significant issue with the plummeting write speed, but even after the media oriented weekend I used the drive for, only about 300 GB were used. I don’t know once I fill the drive with more data as to if there will be any significant issue with the plummeting write speed, but even after the media oriented weekend I used the drive for, only about 300 GB were used. This observation that is unique to me does not start until 400-600 GB, and is apparent after 500 GB on a write graph. To conclude, this drive performs at top speed for most of the time when I’ve seen it. USB 3 is implemented well on the controller. The software, while nice, isn’t necessary, and the drop off (beyond expected mechanical platter limits) is a little surprising. The price of this drive is roughly comparable to that of other manufacturers so really I guess it just depends on how much data use you require. 1TB can be literally the world or a fraction of someone’s media library so simply shop accordingly. A two year warranty is again, simply average in this day and age for portable devices; some companies offer more or less, but all of them less than before! I will ding this one egg for the write flukes as that does make me question the long term stability of the product. Otherwise performance was fantastic. As always, if something is important to you data-wise, back it up in more than one place!

This was a transfer from a mechanical drive from my desktop PC, the external drive was connected by USB 3.0. The drive had been up and running for about a minute or so, the time would have been longer if the drive was spinning up from standby before initializing the transfer. Crystal Disk Mark 64bit results were decent, and outperformed other major brands external USB 3.0 drives I have bench marked in the past. Sequential Read: 147.263 MB/s Sequential Write: 150.858 MB/s Random Read 4K: 0.559 MB/s [136.5 IOPS] Random Write 4K: 5.628 MB/s [1374.0 IOPS] The automated Toshiba Storage Backup Software that is included by downloads is easy to use and understand. Simply select folders or files, and choose how often to back up; hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. Then you can select day of the week and time of day to begin the backup. Once set, the software will automatically backup the files or folders you selected, at the given time, the backup is then saved into a single backup file, and will overwrite previous saves. The backup software won’t complete the backup if the PC goes into sleep or powers down during the backup phase, so you would want to make sure your laptop or PC is in a normal power cycle when scheduling. Overall I have been very satisfied with this Toshiba Canvio Advance. The performance has met and exceeded my expectations and 2TB capacity of this external drive is more than plenty for most needs. I would recommend this drive as a daily or weekly backup or storage drive. If you have critical data for storage or backup, I always recommend redundancy and have multiple backup solutions. However for the average user this drive should fit the needs for backup and storage, any backup is always better than none.
