Toshiba Canvio Advance Hard Drive 2TB Black

Frankly it does not work!I use this primarily as a backup for around 160 GB of files. I have an older Toshiba HD and was very happy with it. Looks like Toshiba is now using something called SMR technology within their traditional HD lines. This technology is primarily used to cram more data in a smaller magnetic disk surface and probably saving Toshiba a few dollars. SMR adds huge overheads when writing bulk data.The result - it is taking 4 days to copy 160 GB when their older product line can do it in 2 hours in the same machine. This is unacceptable and really a bad economic decision by Toshiba, as this will kill their product line. I am returning my purchase.Also see the below review, i should have read it. Prior to purchasing this I had a 1TB dinosaur external that required an actual power cable (plugged into a wall socket). That “thang” hung in there for 15 yrs no prob until it recently started continuously beeping ; letting me know there was an internal prob %26 was likely going to die. The new Toshiba external requires no wall plug- just plug into your computer %26 wallah..the computer recognizes it. It’s so small and portable and there is also the feature that allows you to password protect your docs verses your docs being immediately accessible upon startup. Prior to use you’re required to download the user guide and agreement but after that it’s ready to use. This little thing is easy peasy, full of storage space %26 practical. So far, this is an efficient and reliable external drive. For the price, it is hard to beat, and a basic USB 3+ connection is all I need. It is not as sturdy as my external G-Drive, but the drive mechanism itself may not be altogether different. It seemed optimized for Windows -- plug-and-play, as advertised. Transfer speed seems competitive, and it is quiet. I anticipate it will last longer than the Seagate 4 TB that died on me. A worthwhile storage purchase.
