It's a nice size external disk (smaller than I expected) and it performs really well for smaller file transfers (not several GB at a time). Once you go for bigger transfers/backups (which is why you would need this size I guess) it really starts crawling to something like 10GB per hour (yes per hour!). This makes me wonder if there is a cache of 1GB and if that is the case: can I trust that my data will not be lost if I disconnect the disk after a fast transfer? I will probably keep using it for now as I want 2 backup disks of different brands and I prefer reliability over speed, but there will come a time where I pass it on to the next patient person :-).

I have used Seagate and W-D units, but both have failed to hold data for periods over 12 months. My daughter has had similar experiences with these drives. I purchased a Toshiba unit about 18 months ago and have never had any problems with it.I ordered three of these Toshiba drives. Kept one for the Neat Desk software and gave one to each of my daughters.Last October one daughter lost all of her pictures and college notes on five subjects because her computer failed to recognize the W-D drive. She now uses the Toshiba.

For those who don't know, a portable hard drive is much like the hard drive in your PC, except in a case so that it is protected and able to be easily portable. This 1TB portable hard drive is priced pretty much the same as comparable models. Like most current portable hard drives it connects to your computer using USB 3.0 (which for the non tech-savvy is the newest revision to USB, which is not yet the standard due to how new it is, and is much faster then USB 2.0, which is the format of USB currently commonly used. The devices transfer rate is exceptionally fast (however, I can't compare to other USB 3.0 devices as this is my first encounter with the new format) i transferred 80 GB of files in less than 5 minutes. The dimensions of the device itself are slightly smaller than comparable units, which I liked. The device comes with a back-up software to backup your files, which is optional to install (the installation files come on the drive). I found this software useless as the program would launch and attempt to backup every time I connected ANY external storage to my computer (not just the portable hard drive which the software came with), and in addition to that, windows already has a built in feature to back-up your computer by creating a system image (large file that, in the event you need to restore your PC, can be used to make your computer exactly as it was at the time the image was created, files and all) which i found far more useful then the software, which I ultimately uninstalled. Lastly, while I did feel that this product was priced similar to competitors, I was initially was hopping to find the 2TB version of this device, which is double the capacity for only about $10-$20 more, but was unable to locate one so gave up and settled for this one.Overall the unit exceeded my expectations, and i would recommend it to someone in the market for such a device.

I've had this for about 2-3 weeks. It does what it's meant for - basically storing your stuff and backing up your computer/laptop. The only thing was that I couldn't format it to be readable by a PS3 so I couldn't play movies straight from the hard drive. Hard drives aren't made to be read by PS3s anway, but some can be formatted to FAT32 and the PS3 will read it like it does a flash drive. I'm not an expert in these things, so I just gave up that idea and stuck with just basic storage. Also, the USB line that goes into the hard drive itself is not how it normally would be for other hard drives probably because this is 1TB and 3.0. But other than that, this is a great hard drive.Would definitely recommend mainly because it's a good, tough brand and it's pretty ... MoreI've had this for about 2-3 weeks. I bought this because I don't have the best luck with computers and thought this would help me more than hurt me. Which it certainly has helped. A good buy for sure. It's 2021 and it still works like new.
Bought it for extra storage for my PS5. Worked like a champ as the PS5 allows PS4 games to be stored and played from external storage. Easy to set up (I plugged it into the USB slot on the back of my PS5, went to storage in the settings menu and it had me format the HD for any PS4 games i wanted to put on it). After transferring and downloading a few games on the drive and everything plays great. The storage setting shows the ps5 space on the hardware and an external storage option showing how much free space in on it as well. Can't beat 2 TB of storage for the $60 I paid and will recommend this for anyone needing it.
I really wanted to give this drive a five-egg review, however I simply cannot. What prompted me to purchase this drive was its small size, portability, USB 3.0 speed, and 3-year warranty. The first time I connected it to the front panel USB 2.0 port on my desktop, Windows-XP found the drive and installed the drivers (which are stored in a subdirectory on the hard drive itself). Plug-n-Play couldn't be easier!!! I then plugged it into the USB 3.0 port on my Windows-7 laptop. The drive light lit, but Windows-7 didn't see the drive. Back to my desktop, except now Windows-XP no longer saw the drive either. Many hours of frustration and wasted time later I discovered that by wiggling the USB cable just so my PC would eventually recognize the drive -- but only for as long as I held the cable in a certain position. This drive is great in all respects except for one critical thing: the non-standard, proprietary (and short) USB cable that connects the drive to your computer.
Pros: This is the third such Toshiba USB portable drive I have purchased over the last couple of years. My first one was a 500GB drive which I use for all my working data, and as a main drive that I can move from one computer to another. I only use the inbuilt computer drive to hold the OS and programs. The previous 1GB USB2 drive I purchased was used to back-up data, and the newer USB 2/3 drive is also used for the same purpose, but of course it will be faster with USB3. I have only had the new drive for a few months, but it performs as the other two drives have done without any problems what-so-ever. I do, however, trust these drives myself, and would say that if Windows performed anywhere near as good as these drives I would also be able to trust Windows. As it is though, I now use Ubuntu, very reluctantly ever using Windows nowadays, although some times it is necessary. I find no problems with using these Toshiba drives on the Ubuntu operating system as well.Cons: None to-date.
Totally disappointed, with the product, with the repair (which is beyond repair according to the technicians) and with the customer service. They want to give me back the non-functioning product or my money. It's an SSD Card... I have data inside. I've been waiting for 6 weeks for a solution and they still haven't given me precise information.A disaster.
