Basic 2TB portable HDD

This external drive is rather simple - the packaging is basic; the enclosure is a no-frills black box; only one cable is required for operation; it comes formatted and ready to work; there is no fancy software or any extra functionality. This thing is a basic hard drive that plugs into a USB port. But that doesn't make it bad. The overall size of this device is small and with only one cable needed for operation; this is a great drive to carry around. In terms of speed, this drive is quite average. It is a 5400 RPM drive and speeds are what you would expect from a basic 2.5" 2TB drive. Testing of the drive was done with CrystalDiskMark using 8 passes and a size of 4000MB. On an empty drive sequential read and write speeds averaged 131MB/s and 137MB/s respectively while random read and write speeds averaged 0.4MB/s and 4.6MB/s respectively. After transferring about 1.4TB of data onto the drive, sequential read and write speeds dropped to 97MB/s and 108MB/s respectively and random read and write speeds fell to 0.2MB/s and 0.5MB/s respectively. In terms of real world performance, I saw transfer speeds of about 105MB/s when transferring a random assortment of files. My only complaint about this portable drive is that it only has a 1 year warranty. Such a short warranty does not instill much confidence in a buyer. I have only encountered one HDD failure in my life and it was on a 3 year old Toshiba drive. I prefer to purchase drives with at least a 3 year warranty. Overall, this is a great option for a portable drive. If you are looking for something to back your computer up to, you may want to consider something a bit more stationary. This device was designed with portability in mind and works great for taking large amounts of data on the go.

Better than Seagate

I have purchased toshiba External hard drives in the past and I have never had any complains or complications with them.. On the other hand I would NEVER recommend seagate. With toshiba hard drive my files or uploaded information has never been lost, and it has always worked no matter what. I had bought a seagate hard drive recently because i though after 12 years of not using seagate maybe they had improved their products, but no. After 3 days of use.. all the files i had save were lost, because the hard drive stopped functioning for no reason.. Luckily I hadn't deleted them from my other toshiba hard drive yet. So I was able to just transfer them again to this new toshiba one.. Dinky and spacious

Great little thing, smaller than I thought. Right size for me, but there are bigger capacities available. Price was good, and free delivery too. Came the very next day. Can’t complain. Fast thanks to USB 3.0. Does everything I need, I am a happy customer. Have bought Toshiba before. I like them.

Life savers for new computers and old-school users

A necessary add on to new, all-in-one desktops. Without a HDD and with a relatively small on board solid state drive, thesw new desktops will run outbof memory soon. Also, many new windows computers default saving on oneDrive, which I particularly dislike. All my new PCs have a 1T to 5T external drives and are configured to save everything possible in those drives.

01/12/21- It's the perfect size, weight, speed, and reliability for everything from PC/Steam, Microsoft Xbox 360 & One, Sony PlayStation 3 and newer, and (modded) Nintendo Wii's. Plug & Play compatible even with a OTG or USB 3.0 cable that most Android, Windows & Google Smartphone's can read without specialty apps or drivers. Verified it reads on my Galaxy Note 4 via OTG cable & Note 20 via USB 3.0 adapter. This item came with a 3 ft cable, more than what I needed to mount to my systems. This model doesn't come with any mounting kits, but mounting tape attached to console cases work well for awhile, but a light drop of super glue or epoxy good as a backup adhesive. Highly recommended for hot-drops, modders & partitioners.

Reliable drive with deminishing performance

I use these drives for backup, I have a few of them. I had bad experiences with WD and Seagate reliability, but Toshiba and Hitachi have always been more reliable as internal drives.These Toshiba drives are reliable, never had issues with data integrity. However, you will find as the drive fills up, write performance degrades significantly, i.e. empty drive can sustain write speeds of about 90MB/sec but at 80% capacity you are more likely to get 10MB/sec. I have tried with both 4K blocks as well as 2MB blocks, the result is always the same. Slower write speeds are to be expected as the outer edges of a disk platter spin much faster compared to the inner sectors, but 10MB was slower than expected. I used 2 free benchmark tools to test speed of this drive, ATTO and Crystal Disk Mark. Both tools can be downloaded for free. I tested the drive empty and after I had it filled with approximately 500gb of images and videos. I also tested it in the USB 2 port on my PC as well as the USB 3 port. As far as results are concerned, this drive maxed out the USB 2 port’s 60MBps, so to get best results always connect it to the USB 3 port (if available). ATTO reported average read and write of 148.88MBps and 144.24MBps respectively with a 5% drop in speed when the drive was filled with data. While way off the theoretical top speed of USB 3.0 (640MBps) this is a respectable speed for this type of backup storage. Crystal Disk Mark results showed an average of 145.6MBps and 145.2MBps for sequential read and writes: another consistent result. Nothing to see here, solid results and a good price. I would have preferred a longer warranty period but you can’t have everything. Recommended.

I ordered it and picked it up at one of my local Best Buy stores. It didn't look like I expected it to. It was much smaller than the one I had previously purchased. Also, it had no power cable. Instead, it just draws power from the USB port. I was fine with the smaller size but would have preferred it to have had a separate power cord. With this new storage capacity, I decided to reorganize my company's audio and video assets, dedicating a drive for each category. So far, I have migrated quite a few files to this new 4 TB unit and everything seems to be working fine. Worthwhile savings on USB drive prices for 1TB and 2TB and 3TB USB drives.

Due to the really large storage on the Toshiba drives, it is easier to save very large video files and PC program installation setup files onto these rather than millions of jpgs. Use programs that provide a safe ejection for USB drives and remember that some drives ought to be disconnected that way prior to switching off the computer. Reconnect later after Windows has fully loaded the desktop setup and various startup programs. Otherwise, the computer may not start properly and pause during the initial checks.
