I've purchased a few of these, this particular brand and model. It's not the fastest 2.5-inch drive, but it's an excellent choice if high capacity at a low price is more important. Based on my experience, it is reliable and produces very little heat. It is also very quiet. This time, I used it to replace a 3.5-inch hard drive in an external hard drive enclosure. I wanted to keep using this particular enclosure, because it connects using FireWire and has some other features that are not common. Its hard drive failed; it's an older IDE type. Instead replacing it with another 3.5-inch drive that is IDE and hard to find these days, I used this 2.5-inch hard drive with an IDE to SATA adapter (plus a mounting bracket). Because this drive is much smaller physically compared to a 3.5-inch drive, there is plenty of room for the IDE to SATA adapter; a 3.5-inch SATA drive plus adapter does not fit in available space. The additional space around the drive and its lower heat output keeps the external enclosure running very cool; its fan never comes on anymore. It's now almost silent in operation; it was noticeably whiny before from drive spin and fan noise. And for this purpose, this drive is more than fast enough.

Don't have much to say other than I watched a video .. youtube and the guy recommended several drives this one was a good purchase price point and better rep than Baracuda brand (don't get that one). Using as a backup, don't get huge drives as they are more difficult to retrieve info from if they fail. Get naked drives so you don't deal with the bridge component, (one more thing to worry about) A naked drive is easy to handle, don't bump it while it is spinning, only handle from the edges, don't squeeze/pinch between fingers. Get redundant drives so if one goes bad, you have others to barrow parts from if this one goes bad. Get a dock that has a bridge built in so you can slot this drive and others as you need to back up etc. Anyway as of 01-30-20 I still have ... MoreDon't have much to say other than I watched a video .. youtube and the guy recommended several drives this one was a good purchase price point and better rep than Baracuda brand (don't get that one). The hard drive works perfectly, however it arrived without the foil screen which covers the back of the drive and is held in place by 4 screws. As this was taken out of a laptop I do not know why the foil cover was removed. I took the foil cover off the original drive so that I could put the replacement in to my old laptop. I have been unable to locate a place to purchase a foil cover and screws to put on my original drive to be able to use it as a portable hard drive.
Good value for the money in a par with other drives of this type and similar brands. I buy recycled drives for the laptops I piece together for people pro bono to be used in charity work and cannot pay too much for any of them. This way a good drive for the money and fairy quiet considering the vintage. If you treat them with respect and take them for what they are worth and get them at a good price most of them work well enough to give you the service that you pay for. The bottom line with all recycled products is the value you get for your investment. And so far these drives have met that criteria for me.
I installed this on my MacBook because my hard drive got damaged. I had a backup external drive. First off, this was an easy install and worked great! I failed by backing up straight to this, and that made this drive locked with no operating system, just my backup. So I wiped my external drive clean and installed Operating System on it and then backed up the system. So, my advice is to install the operating system before doing the backup restoration.
Considering I could have bought any drive to replace my low capacity orig. hard drive to a 500GB unit. You would think because you bought a new Toshiba drive it would come with Tech Support for my problem. But no, I spent hours on the phone with Toshiba to no end. Finallly I had to post my dilima on "Fix Ya's " wesite and imeaditly got an answer to what I had to do to get this hard drive installed in my laptop. And shame on Toshiba for trying to charge ne $69.00 to help me install the O.S. Y would think buying Toshiba would have been enough to avoid such issues. It only affirms my posistion that I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOSHIBA PIECE OF EQIPMENT AGAIN. Not with the headaches I went trough. Toshiba could have easily offered me a solution for free considering I bought ... MoreConsidering I could have bought any drive to replace my low capacity orig. hard drive to a 500GB unit. Toshiba could have easily offered me a solution for free considering I bought orig. Toshiba parts. I also own a Toshiba Canvio 1TB ext. hard drive where there was no tech support at all except for some phantom website called "toshibaacclaim.com" which when input gives you an errror message saying this website is not available. Save your self the headaches and money and buy a differant brand brand. Never have I been so upset with a companys inability to help their customers wiith new product support!
The file system was not NTFS. Could not get the HD to format or accept a recently purchased, new, legal Windows 10 disc. I tried to reboot with program on the HD, no go. Luckily I had my original Windows 7 reboot USB and was able be load the operating system. Afterwards, I replaced Windows 7 with Windows 10 PRO. It was a small hiccup, but I should have been able to load my OP from disc and not the Windows 7 USB.
This is the second replacement Toshiba hard drive Ive had to replace in my wifes laptop thats only 4 years old. One thing I noticed is the manufacture date was 2014! Really. 8 years old brand new out of the box. Easy enough to replace because I had a backup disk to reinstall windows and files.
This HDD works great in my MacBook Pro. While most people covet SSDs, I want the large capacity of SATA drives and this 1TB 2.5"" HDD fits the bill (it's a true 1TB drive with 999.86GB of usable space AFTER formatting ... in the past I've bought 500GB drives that barely gave me 470GB of space and other 1TB drives that gave me 975GB or less of space). The process: (1) I used the cloning software SuperDuper! to make a [bootable] copy of the HDD on a Mercury Firewire Drive. That's the longest part of the operation. (2) I rebooted the Firewire as the start-up disk to make sure it was bootable - and indeed it was. (3) I shutdown the MacBook Pro, removed the bottom screws (a couple of minutes), and once the cover is off there are only two screws to remove (a retaining ... MoreThis HDD works great in my MacBook Pro. (3) I shutdown the MacBook Pro, removed the bottom screws (a couple of minutes), and once the cover is off there are only two screws to remove (a retaining bar) that allows you to remove the HDD. A quick swap, screw the bottom enclosure back on, boot-up and you're good-to-go. (4) Next thing: just copy your bootable backup to this new Toshiba (much quicker, about 33% of the time, than the initial back-up). Once completed, just shutdown and reboot without the Firewire Drive connected. The actual swapping of the HDD took less than 10-minutes (don't be afraid to do it yourself - don't pay someone else over $100 to do it for you). My old HDD was about 63% full - so maybe that's the reason - but this drive operates a bit faster than the OEM 500GB that I took out of it (no, I did not benchmark it but the speed increase is obvious). In summary, this SATA works great, was an easy replacement in my MacBook Pro, and the cost-vs.-capacity makes this a great ""value"" purchase.
