This is the most affordable managed switch I found. I had a TL-SG1008 unmanaged switch last time, and it only lasted 2 years. I went with a cheaper brand afterwards due to that bad experience. Now, I am in need of a more advanced home network setup. With the addition of a Dell PowerEdge server in my network, segmentation and VLANs became inevitable. Hence, I had to go back to TP-Link due to the very limited choices in this price point. I am pairing this switch with a Topton X2E N100 OPNsense router firewall.There is an update available for this switch at the time of this writing, but it always failed at 46 percent (TL-SG1016DE(UN)_V7_1.0.1 Build 20240628). Great switch if you're looking to wire your own home network. I'm in an older house that has no form of networking cables run in it, but have attic access and have had this on my list for a while to do. This was the switch I'd researched to get even though it costs more than others I'd looked at. This is overkill for my needs, but I wanted to future-proof things. I received v4 of the switch, and it pretty much is plug and play out of the box. I've seen others comment you need to manually set which port is the WAN port connected to your router but that's not the case on the V4. Just plug it into any port and it knows what to do. Have had no issues with it, there is no fan on the unit so it's super quiet (no noise at all), and it's very lean on power. I bought this for networking my home with CAT6 Ethernet. My home is a little older and only had one coaxial input for Verizon FiOS. I wanted to change that and I used this switch to do the job. I mounted the switch to a rack in the basement and ran my cabling to a patch panel. From there, I patched the cables into the switch along with the FiOS router and my NAS. I plugged my PC into my newly installed Ethernet jack (used WiFi for the longest time) and moved my WiFi router to a central point in the house, as well. After I connected it all up the switch worked exactly how it needed to. No configuration needed as it’s an unmanaged switched (wasn’t looking for anything that complicated). I noticed my speed I would recommend this switch.

I have Google Fiber 2.5 gbps plan. But the house is wired with CAT 5e that maxes out at 1 gbps (Although IEEE has come up with new standards for running 2.5 gbps over CAT 5e). My home office is other end of the house from GF Multi-Gig router. I needed a switch that can connect to my 2.5 gbps Mesh Extender in home office. This switch is a cost effective option. Connected the switch to Ethernet port in home office (Make sure you connect router to port 5) and connected the Mesh Extender to the switch. GF Multi-Gig router Ethernet port light changed from Green (1 gbps connection) to Orange (2.5 gbps connection) confirming that the switch connected at 2.5 gbps over CAT 5e. It is quite possible that GF Mesh Extender is not 2.5 gbps. With this setup my WiFi speed test showed consistently 600 mbps down and 400 mbps up. Previously without the switch this was 400 mbps down and 200 mbps up. I am happy with the TP Link switch.

Technically it's a 15 port switch since 1 port is required to transfer datst with the router. So far I'm running 5 devices POE and it has no issue powering them, not even at night when the IR LEDs kick on. I'm going to be adding a WiFi access point that is POE, and possibly running 2 WiFi cameras from this POE using all 8 POE ports to see if it has the wattage to run everything. BONUS it pays for itself from the savings ~$40 for each POE injector! WARNING this isn't a router or modem or WiFi access point! You'll need a router to direct internet traffic to the correct device, but they usually only have ~4 ports, some have WiFi antennas for an access point, but I don't like them because the best location for your router is not typically the best location for WiFi coverage. You should get a secondary WiFi access point that is dedicated to that job, it will give better connection speeds, and you can locate it in the best stop for covering your home and property (I can move my lawn and snowblow the sidewalk without losing connection). However your WiFi is going to slow down if you try to run everything wirelessly. So you'll want a good switch to hard wire anything you can. Desktop computers, printers, digital storage, game consoles, security cameras, WiFi access point, smart home controller. You'll get less WiFi interference, and better security if devices aren't WiFi connected with the default password for any drive-by hacker to steal, or neighbor to leach off your internet.

Provide me with extra ethernet ports for my small network. Construction of the switch is solid. The finish is smooth and the metal is thick enough that you do not have to worry about any damage through normal use or with kids. Pros: 1. Plug & Play. No configuration needed as it is an unmanaged switch 2. Solid and dependable 3. Sturdy metal case 4. Very easy to install 5. Great price and works exactly as expected 6. This is a basic unmanaged 16 port gigabit switch with all the basic features needed for someone running a small home network (or possibly a small office network). The switch is fanless and thus 100% quiet, and all of the ports automatically detect what is plugged into them and will adjust accordingly. This means that not only do they auto-negotiate with devices operating at other speeds, but they also will detect which port is coming from your router (or another switch) without you having to use a specific port for that purpose. There seems to be some confusion between this model (TL-SG1016) which is designed as a rackmount switch and the other version (TL-SG1016D) which can either be a rackmount OR a desktop switch. There seems to be some confusion between this model (TL-SG1016) which is designed as a rackmount switch and the other version (TL-SG1016D) which can either be a rackmount OR a desktop switch. Functionality wise there is no difference between the two, however the "D" version is only 13 inches wide and if you wish to rack mount it, you'll use the included brackets which allow it to mount to a 19 inch rack. The non "D" version (the version I purchased) is 19" and does come with the rack mount ears that allow you to fasten it to the rack itself. There is some misinformation out there that suggests this version doesn't come with the rack mount hardware and that is simply incorrect. It doesn't come with the rackmount "kit" that the "D" version includes because it isn't necessary as it is already the correct width, but it does come with the rackmount ears and the screws required to fasten the ears on to the switch. It does NOT come with screws used to fasten the switch to the actual rack, but that is likely because there are several different sizes of rack screws... so you're on you own there. One interesting thing about the mounting ears is that they are designed to be rotated in four directions. This means you can mount the switch directly to a wall simply by rotating the mounting ears 90 degrees. You can also rotate them 180 degrees to allow the switch to sit in front of the face of your rack as this pushes the mounting position back around two inches. If you have a shallow mounting bracket rather than a full rack this may be useful, but keep in mind the power cord for this unit goes directly out the back, so depending upon how much space you have it could still pose problems. Each ear mounts with four screws (also included) and they are plenty sturdy. They also include some rubber feet if you decide to sit this on a shelf. Not much else to it. If you want a rackmount option this is a good one. If you prefer something a bit smaller that you could leave on a desk or on shelf near your cable modem, you might find the "D" version is a better fit. The only real difference is physical size and how much air space is inside the case.
