If you try to exceed that, you will be disappointed. If you have a basic use device and are just having issues in a room with spotty wireless, this is going to really help you out. This does a great job of getting wireless further into those dead spots, but it just does not have the speed for those high demand devices.

The WA855RE has an excellent interface, with all the tools you’d want; including the ability to schedule its use. If used, the extender will power up and down by day and times selected. It even has a “night mode,” in which you can schedule the time for the power/connection LED to go out. I was disappointed in usage: to upgrade the firmware, there is no link directly to the support page for the device. This would be very easy to do in the GUI. A link to the general TP-Link site is hidden in the “?” in upper right across from “Firmware.” The other puzzle is what firmware is the latest? (There are 2 versions of the device; mine is V1.) The factory firmware is “1.0.0 Build 20160427 Rel. 64215." However, a green “?” link takes U.S. customers to the European site which reports latest firmware as, “TL-WA855RE(EU)_V1_160414." After careful reading, I had to go through several menus to bring up the US English site, then search for the device, then Firmware pages. The reported firmware there was “TL-WA855RE(US)_V1_160427" with NO Release version. I assumed it’s the one I have and didn’t attempt updating. This is not a good customer experience. I wondered if the EU software would trash the extender? So I would highly recommend TP-Link fix the management interface to include auto-check or at least a firmware link that goes directly to the appropriate firmware page. Along with the fix, the simple setup, 2-year warranty, and the solid connection, the WA855RE is a very good value if you only need an 802.11n extender, access point or bridge.

You can set a static IP address, adjust the speed, max, mid, min, and set MAC filtering among other things.

During setup of the first one, I was able to use the Wifi setup through the device itself to connect to my wireless network. However, when I went to connect the second one to my wireless router, the devices Wifi setup would not work. In essence, my router already saw one of the devices via Wifi and wanted to assign the IP/MAC address it had given to the first device to the second instance of the device it saw. This unit is well built and stayed cool to touch during testing, the smart indicator was useful when testing around the house, clearly showing when communication with the router was good or bad. It connected to my wireless network easily and I was able to test its capabilities by sending packets of data to and from a remote laptop using Totusofts LanSpeed software. I connected to the laptop using only 2.4ghz N. Transferring files through the range extender to the laptop I saw speeds of 10.7 megabits per second or when I connected to the laptop using just the router I was able to see speeds of 48.2 megabits per second. 10.7 megabits per second is enough to surf the net and send email, but forget streaming video or music. This extender is well built like all TP Link products, comes with an Ethernet port (10/100mbps), signal strength meter and was relatively easy to set up manually. It is inexpensive to buy and comes with a 2 year warranty. If you are not able to run Ethernet, upgrade your router, use Powerline (TP Link have some excellent Powerline kits), then a range extender could be considered. Just remember single band range extenders communicate with the router and connected devices on the same band.

I've reviewed a lot of TP-Link's network devices and rarely am I disappointed. All in all this is a great device for the price and was crazy easy to setup.
My office is in the back of the house, at the end of a long hall, and even though my router gives off a pretty strong signal, my computer disconnects frequently, especially when the door is closed. The extender is right at the halfway point and performs exactly as it should. It was a little tricky to set up, as the instructions simply say to plug it in, push the button and sign in with the host router's info. It was not that easy for me, I ultimately had to obtain an ethernet cable and plug directly into the extender in order to do a first time setup. After that, though, piece of cake, works great.

Hopefully this will help put an end to all them camera hijacking stories you see on the news! And it is even more important now as home security is more internet enabled! So many people using their mobile devices to lock and unlock their doors and don’t realize that adding an unsecure device into your network can break down all your security! I would suggest using an iPad to set this up! It was the easiest method by far! Just went to settings, seen the odd wi-fi available, connected and opened up safari to put in the tplinkextender.net and walla! admin and admin and it was asking me to change user name and password and then finish up the quick and easy setup! It wasn’t hard to setup with my Sony Vaio with windows 10 via the lan, but when I went back in to see the other settings, that is where I was unable to. Since our Comcast box which gives us our wi-fi is on the 10.0.0.1 end of IP addresses, I had to login to the Comcast router and see what IP was given to the extender. Then I was able to type that into the address bar and able to login with new user name and password. The tplinkextender.net wasn’t pulling it up after it finished it’s quick setup. It is a good idea for you to know how to access your routers WebGUI so you can access this important information to give you control over how your stuff will work!
Plug in the extender wait for the light, push the button on your router, then push the extenders button when the light comes on, its that easy, even with an encrypted wii fii. We placed the extender about 22 feet from router and thru 1 wall plus a dishwasher cabinet wall. we get about a 20 at the source computer with hard wired Ethernet and 14 to 18 at the old dead spots.
