I love this smoker. I have been wanting a Traeger for such a long time, but haven't been able to get one as I was in a condo for five years. This was the first thing that I ordered once I moved into my house. Dove right in and cooked a pork shoulder for my first meal and was extremely happy with the results and the way the grill performed. The only reason this is getting four stars was because the grill arrived, it was damaged from shipping and had some popped welds in the grease trough that I couldn't confirm were because of the shipping or because the metal wasn't properly heat relieved post welding. I got on the phone to put in a warranty claim and was taken care of right away, the rep Karen was fantastic and helped every step of the way. Received the ... MoreI love this smoker. Product is really solid and was easy to put together (although you will need another set of hands to set it upright after assembly). I noticed a couple of the factory screws needed tightened, but easy to fix with the included screw driver. WiFi setup was a breeze and the auger primed the pellets without a hitch. When going through the seasoning process, it takes a couple of minutes for the pellets to ignite and a couple more minutes to get up to temp. Seasoning process was a breeze following the included instructions in the manual. I did notice that you get the most smoke from temps 225 and below and even more smoke utilizing the super smoke option. My Ironwood 885 had no problem getting to 500 degrees. Brand New Grill close to 2000 invested at this point between Grill, accessories, pellets etc. Attempted to cook on grill 5 times it has only worked twice. Spent over 3 hours on the phone with tech support on 3 different occasions. Getting same message each time and Tier 0 wants to step me through the same steps over and over. Read the notes from the last hour long call. Luckily i have a good grill not a Traeger that works when turned on so i was able to salvage a couple of expensive pieces of meat. Traeger finally after having issue escalated is sending me a part to install. Wasted pellets, meat that should have been smoked, and hours of my time i will never get back. Traeger offers I'm sorry. I wish i had the recording ill bet they said "I'm sorry" 50 times. Poor ... Had i purchased this locally it would already be returned. Serves me right buying at a show and Traeger shipping it to me.
I am an experienced smoker. Everyone loves this product the first season they own it. I always give any product over $1,000 a year to see how it stands up. I would never purchase another smoker from Traeger.Moderate use and the outer coating is dissipating. The machine does a terrible job maintaining a constant temp. For example, week 1 a 7lb Boston Butt will be completely cooked ( nearly over done ) in 7-8 hours, the next week a 7lb Boston Butt will need an extra 2 hours. We put several industrial thermometers and found huge swings in the temps by up to 20(f) on either side of the unit. In another word, our smoker said the temp was 252(f). In reality, the smoker was closer to 215(f). The next week we again saw temps around 250 stated and the temps was actually ... MoreI am an experienced smoker. Sometimes it will not power the unit, at other times we have just seen the machine turn off. The machine frequently has a hard time igniting, this even times directly following a thorough cleaning.
I had an issue with the meat probe on a brand new grill a couple of months after I purchased the grill. The probe will shoot way high after it hits 100 degrees. I contacted Traeger and told me to calibrate it in an ice bath. I put the probe in an ice bath and it reads 23-24 degrees so we offset it by 8 degrees. I go to make burgers the next day and it is reading 180 degrees and I know my burgers are not burnt because I just put them on there. I check it with a different probe and its showing 120 and slowly climbing. I contact Traeger again and their first guy disconnects so I am doing it again. The second guy is giving me the run around about needing to calibrate the probe again and they dont trust third party probes. He even sends me an article about it. He claims ... He claims he checked the probed over wifi and it is working fine. In the last week I have made smoked salmon, turkey, and burgers and you cannot trust this probe because it goes so high. All this over a $20 item. Absolutely embarrassing for the company. 1-2 hours dealing with this now over a $20 item. Just send me a new probe guys. They refused. So pathetic. I will buy my own probe and never buy a traeger grill again nor will I recommend it to anybody. Awful service and product clearly. The worst part is they don't seem to care if they are willing to argue over a broken $20 probe on a $1600 grill.
Pros: intuitive controls. Watch the temp until things settle in. Very well engineered, even the grill cover exudes quality.Cons: Temp can overrun the target 50-deg until temp settles down. Be prepared to open the lid for a quick cool off. A shelf under the smoker would have been nice.Biggest con: lack of smoke. Yes, I’ve tried the “super smoke†, but I want smoke at all temps. I supplement by using stainless steel 12†;pellet tubes (highly recommended) with a propane torch. (Don’t overfill these pellet smoking tubes - you want an air gap above the pellets the entire length of the tube). Mix in wood chips recommended.Traeger quickly achieves a “blue smoke†, which is highly desirable, but only after you have fully smoked your meat. Blue smoke adds almost ... Extremely easy to put together, the only reason you need 2 people is that it's so heavy, everything very easy to understand. Owners manual helped with how to season the grill.Cooked our first meal on it shortly after and couldn't fault it. The only slight challenge is that it did struggle to get up to temp (it was around -2 outside when cooking) and then maintain it but in warmer, normal BBQ season that will not be a problem. The burgers came out really well, even though the wood pellets are flavoured wood, we cooked at a normal BBQ temp (not low and slow smoking) and did not taste the wood pellet flavour, this was something I had questions about for people who don't want that smokiness to their normal BBQ food, they came out great! So for anyone who has doubts ... We planned to cook for 30 people with our brand new smoker. After assembling the unit Christmas morning everyone was excited to for the upcoming feast. How quickly the anticipation of joy and full bellies turned to frustration when I had to disassemble the unit, check every connection only to find out the unit shipped with a defective blower fan making it a very large, heavy and expensive paperweight. We scrambled to cook all of this food on a grill, oven, stovetop etc. Now I wait for the new part to show up and pray it makes the smoker functional. Every time I use it moving forward I'll remember how much extra work it caused me on Christmas. Traeger support didn't even offer to send me a gift card, some free pellets or anything. I NEVER write reviews of products, but this purchase was so disappointing I just had to write something. I second another review that refers to the Ironwood 885 a smokeLESS convection oven. This thing never produced any smoke once it got through its start up cycle. None. You can't even smell the aroma of pellets burning with this thing. I was in disbelief. I emptied the hopper since the pellets I was using came out of my previous pellet grill, thinking maybe they had dried out too much in the old smoker, and went to the store and purchased fresh pellets. Nothing different, the same result of no smoke or aroma. My wife even asked why she couldn't smell anything while this thing was operating. I tried super smoke mode, no difference other then the larger temperature ... MoreI NEVER write reviews of products, but this purchase was so disappointing I just had to write something. The app stops updating the cook data when it goes idle and then you have to force close the app and reopen to get your updated temperatures and everything else, which is completely worthless. Apparently that began being a major issue around Thanksgiving 2022. Don't believe me? Go check the app reviews on the play store. Traeger drove the app off a cliff, making this anything but a smart grill. $1,600 and the app doesn't even work for months at a time? No thanks. The only way I can see someone giving this a positive review is if they have never owned a pellet grill/smoker before and didn't know what to expect. Even then I can't imagine being satisfied with the purchase at this price level. My old $400 Pit Boss vertical smoker from Lowes smokes circles around this "premium" grill. If your willing to spend this much on a pellet grill, do yourself a massive favor and save a little longer and get one from Lone Star Grillz, Yoder, or one of the other companies that produce actual premium products that SMOKE AND HAVE WORKING APPS. Otherwise, save your money and go buy a cheaper unit from a big box store that will still give you more flavor and a more enjoyable experience. I truly hope I just got a lemon and this isn't the actual experience everyone else is having when it comes to smoke production and flavor. Hopefully Traeger fixes the app so it actually functions for all their customers some time soon, but they sure don't seem to be very concerned with it or be working with any urgency on it as it has already been 2 months of misery for everyone.
