Don't expect precision
Having read a mixture of reviews on the web about this Triton oscillating sander I decided to take a chance with this machine. I've just started making guitars and a spindle sander is essential for this type of work. Before I even began to sand any wood I checked how square the spindle was to the table set at zero degrees. It was well out of alignment! The flatness of the table was also checked and found to be anything but flat.I really wanted this machine to meet my requirements so I'll try a replacement in the hope that this is just a poor example.Update: So having driven back to Screwfix Marlborough branch, I was informed that my order is still "Processing" and that there is nothing that can be done until I received notification that the order is ... Fantastic sander...ditch the free belt though...
This sander is a workhorse! All of it’s accessories are stowed away nicely and setup is a breeze. The dust extraction works flawlessly while in spindle mode...the belt sander mode dust extraction does well though not as efficient as spindle mode. The one thing I would speak against is the 80 grit belt that comes with the sander...it has bite, but the joint seam overlaps. So when sanding your workpiece will get bumped away from the sander on each rotation. That will lead to you compensating and the eventual flaw on the leading edge of the piece you are sanding. No worries though...you can find a 12 piece variety pack of belts with butt joints for about $18.00...and they are fantastic with this sander.Note to Triton guys: Don’t devalue this awesome sander with a ... Good sander
Overall this sands well and is easy to swap between the belt and spindles. It's much better than using my drill press and belt sander. The biggest problem was getting the adjustable table to be 90 degrees to the belt/spindle. The slot on the curved arm is slightly short so I had to pull fairly hard on the table with my knee on the base to get it square. I'll probably file the slot a bit longer. The base has slots to hold the pieces and those are handy for swapping parts. But for the smaller pieces it's too easy to suck them up with the vacuum when I'm cleaning up the tool. A little drawer might be better.I would consider a variable speed sander if I upgrade again.... Good tool, not quite great.
It is too easy to lose the little parts but works well, otherwise. This is one of those tools that does a lot of things okay but a few things that it is almost the only tool for the job, like sanding deep inside curves or deep cylinders. Despite this, I use the belt sander attachment more than anything else. Just don't depend on the storage grooves and spaces for small components. Keep them somewhere safer.... Show more

Great addition to my small shop, I will use this often!
Great sander that removes material quickly with little effort. I wish there was an option to somehow set the belt flat but it works fine. The belt size is a 4"x24" which is mentioned nowhere that I could find and the 1/2" spindle sleeve fits on the shaft without the drum which all larger sizes use. This caused me an extra trip back thinking there was a part missing (5 sleeves 4 drums) but it worked out. The machine operates smoothly and is fairly quiet. Overall I am very pleased with the power of the new addition to my small shop as I hate hand sanding.... Show more

Great addition to the workshop
I only work with Oak aged from fresh sawn to historic 700 years+. Was apprehensive about purchasing this machine as there were not many reviews. So pleased I did. This is a great piece of kit and I have finished everything from Japanese tables to 1/4 scale ribbed quadripartite timber vaulting! The different size bobbins make any radius job so much easier. So easy to use, great weight and dust extraction is awesome. The split deck also comes in very handy (check this is adjusted to square against the sanding belt if sanding flat) Have had and used this machine for 10 months (dont like writing a review until the kit has been tried and tested for some time!) it works like a dream and has managed every job I have used it for. I wouldn't change it and would very highly ... MoreI only work with Oak aged from fresh sawn to historic 700 years+. Was apprehensive about purchasing this machine as there were not many reviews. Great combination spindle and belt sander
Works great! I like that it has the spindle plus belt sanding capacity and use it often for both, although only on softwoods so far. I was a little worried about the plastic construction, but that keeps it light - easy to move from a shelf to a bench when needed - and so far seems sturdy enough. It is nice that storage for most of the parts is conveniently located on the machine. My main worry is that I will accidentally vacuum away the small parts while cleaning and lose them, so will have to be careful about that. Would be nice if it had the capacity for a 3" sanding disc but that is my only quibble so far. Might not be durable enough for heavy use but perfect for a hobbyist or smaller shop.... Show more

Top quality and so versatile!
I am very impressed with the quality, sturdiness and versatility of the product. Its very solid and has storage for all the accessories. It was very easy to set up and even easier to use. The folding rest is accurate, precisely 90degrees to the sanding belt/spindle when in the upright position. The adjustable rest is made of metal which is a big bonus. It is so solid and accurate that I have successfully used it as a thicknesser for veneers by clamping a guide to the metal rest and feeding laminates between the guide and 40mm spindle. Wonderfully versatile (and saved me from having to spend on a thickness sander) Worth every penny... Show more

Triton Oscillating Spindle & Belt Sander
Having now used the sanders belt and spindle functions a few times and swapped between the two I can say that:- The overall experience of swapping between the belt and spindle was very easy especially with the storage of all the components within the sander itself.- The sanding performance (which is why we buy these tools) worked very well with the grit provided, no burns on the wood and very few sanding marks . The extraction hook up performed very well with a 32mm hose connected directly.- The build quality is robust and looks as though it will last.Overall the Triton is worth the money and I would recommend.... Very useful piece of equipment
I had been looking for an oscillating drum sander for a while but the free standing models were all expensive. I saw this and took a punt on it. It was very easy to mount it in a simply made table and now I have a free standing machine which is ideal for my guitar making. The drums are very easy to change but make sure the locking screw is very tight as if not the the sanding sleeves have a tendency to rise up the drum. The question "Is it powerful" the answer is yes and no. It's powerful enough to remove light surface markings but not aggressive enough for heavy duty work but it still takes away a lot of the elbow grease. I haven't used it as a hand held sander so I can't comment but it does have a simple clamp for bench mounting which is probably a better option ...
