Troy Lee Designs A2 MIPS Decoy MTB Helmet Black

TLD once again sets the standard of helmet technology with the Troy Lee Designs A2 Helmet. For all-mountain and enduro riders, the release of the Troy Lee A1 helmet presented the benchmark of what a helmet should be: extended coverage, smooth profile, a DH-inspired visor, and of course, tons of Troy Lee style. And yet, there was something amiss. Although cyclists raved about its comfort, it was an undeniably hot helmet, with a ventilation system that was easily overwhelmed on climbs and hot days. Plus, while almost every head could fit in an A1, the larger helmet sizes had an almost comically large profile. The result of years of analyzing problems and designing solutions, the Troy Lee Designs A2 helmet is everything you loved about the A1 but with better looks, ventilation, and fit. Loaded with up-to-date safety features, the A2 features a MIPS liner and a co-molded EPS and EPP foam liner. MIPS allegedly decreases rotational forces in a typical cycling impact up to 30%. Strategic placement of the two types of foam takes advantage of the different impact absorption properties of each. Amazingly, the A2 has 16% more foam in the frontal lobe impact areas, yet still maintains a much lower overall profile.

A good upgrade to entry level helmets

Just be sure to measure your head and use the sizing chart online at the TLD website and you should be fine.Included with this helmet is a protective bag which is well thought out with a microfiber side that touches the shell and a mesh bottom that allows the helmet to dry while stored away. A sticker pack is also included. The only thing I would change on this helmet is the clasp. Some helmets use the magnetic clasps and that has spoiled me. No lining up just put the clasps together and they lock. This helmet using old school pinch clasps.

I didn't care for the new magnetic buckle on the new A3 though-I want to feel and audible lock....Overall though, I'll put up with the lack of a forehead sweat diverter, because I like the sizing and looks on the A2 much better. Great helmet and now the price came down as well, and they are giving you another spare helmet pad, just like the new A3 MIPS.

Troy Lee did more than just carve out the vents on an A1 and call it good - the A2 uses a mix of EPP (expanded polypropylene) and EPS (expanded polystyrene) foams in order to allow it to handle high and low-speed impacts. Compared to the A1, the EPS at the front of the helmet is 16% thicker to provide even more protection to the frontal lobe area. In addition to the use of two foam densities, TLD also equip the A2 with a MIPS liner thats designed to help reduce the rotational forces that reach the brain. The A2s shape makes it possible to easily store sunglasses when theyre not in use, and theres also more room around the ears to prevent glasses frames from touching the helmets shell. The fit of the helmet is adjusted via a dial at the back of the helmet, and there are three different height settings for further fine tuning. Ive been able to get in a handful of rides so far with the A2, and although the mercury has been reluctant to climb above 50°F / 10°C (after all, its still February), the increased airflow with the A2 versus the A1 is noticeable, a feature that will undoubtedly be even more welcome when spring and summer arrive. The padding also seems to dry faster, another plus for those warm days. As far as fit goes, the A2 has a tough row to hoe when it comes to knocking the A1 of its perch as the king of comfort. So far Id say A1 keeps the crown, although the A2 isnt far off. My head shape is more oval than round, and the A2 seems to sit a little bit higher than the A1 does. Its very secure, and it never shifted out of place even on rough, bumpy trails, but it doesnt cradle my head quite as well as the A1. As with any helmet, its always best to try before you buy - fit will vary from rider to rider. On a similar note, I also found that the front portion of the helmets shell sticks out far enough that it slightly entered my field of vision, typically when climbing. Of course, this could also be related to my head shape, and might not be the case for all riders, but its something I didnt experience with the A1. Luckily, I havent put the A2s impact absorption capabilities to the test yet (knock on wood), but its good to see more companies incorporating features designed to deal with multiple impact speeds. I need some more time (and some warmer weather) to fully evaluate the A2, but by all appearances it upholds the blend of style and safety that Troy Lee Designs helmets are known for. Between sizes
7 November 2023

When measuring my head it is perfectly borderline between large and extra large. I've had other very comfortable helmets in the past this is not one of them. I've owned two different sizes of this helmet . My issue with the helmet is that it does not fit my head properly. The medium is too tight around the rear "corners "of my head. The next size up is way too loose and I have to tighten it too much and it smashes my forehead into the front of the helmet and even rips the pads apart there. And the tightening mechanism eventually fails even though I never put lights on a helmet.

Great helmet!
31 December 2023

I had previously tried Fox speedframe, but it was just a smidge narrow on the sides, felt like someone was squeezing my head with their hands. Turns out, fox tends to cater towards those with narrower heads, and being on the upper end of a size medium, there just wasn't enough width even though my head circumference was well within the range for medium. Now onto TLD A2, it's exactly what I needed. The med/large was perfect for my slightly rounder oval head measuring 58cm. It looks really good on, color is amazing, just took my first ride with it and forgot I had a helmet on the entire time. Highly recommend!

I have a smaller head and wear my hair in a ponytail, this helmet fits my my head great and there is room for a ponytail - I like the vents and how lightweight it feels. Also, I have to give a shout out to Evo customer service! I was not sure what size to get and was a bit confused about the sizing on this particular helmet, the representative was so helpful, did research for me and even followed up with me the next day. I would recommend this helmet and the customer service!

Perfect fit for me, saved my noggin on a crash
31 July 2024

I am glad I am able to still get the A2. Everybody’s head is different so people will just have to try different helmet brands until they find one that is the most comfortable. This one happens to be it for me. Love this blue color and the airflow is great. Bought this to replace my last A2 helmet that got damaged in a crash. The helmet got dented and the visor shattered and I can say I didn’t feel the impact at all on my head. Always wear a helmet!!

Quick shipping, nice helmet
27 December 2022

This helmet arrived quickly (within just a few days). It’s very nice looking. I chose it because it was on a list of safe helmets and for the MIPS technology. I also wanted the bright color for visibility. It was packaged in a pleasant way to protect the helmet. I have a big head but not a huge head and the xl/2xl fits. It can also be tightened too big or too small for my head. The visor came attached to the helmet. The buckle is fine, just a normal buckle. I really like how the helmet looks- smooth. Now I need a warm day to try it out!

Worth every penny, more so that they are on sale now.

Great helmet, secure and comfortable fitting/cradle system. Never expected it to be light, but feels(felt) only slightly heavier than my road helmet. Served me great for 9 months, why only 9 months you ask? Well on 6/7/23 I carried too much speed through a corner and missed a transition, sailing off a drop in to a steep downhill. Landed 12' below stuffing front wheel launching off bike. Landed on back/neck/head, will be off the bike for a week or so. After waking up from an unplanned nap, I made it out of park and slowly made my way home. Happy to be able to order a replacement.
