Performance:great productScrew Shopee for not allowing photo or vid submissions without camera and mic access, and fug your 5 coins, I want 5000. Seller was great and answered all my enquiries, real responsive too. Good product. Thunderbolt allows for charging, display on a second monitor all while being able to transfer a 5GB file in under 10 seconds. Amazing tech. I’d suggest getting one if you own a computer that supports Thunderbolt, especially MacBooks because they have so limited ports.

Does what it's supposed to

This dock is great and works well paired with a MacBook. It has plenty of ports and connections for sure, and they're fast. That said it seems like it's a little dated, and they should really release a new model soon. Here's why, in my opinion:1) It provides a digital optical port. I don't know many people that use that technology, and it never really took off. Some may be excited about it, but I think it's an odd port to include on a dock, considering there is better, more widely-used technology available.2) It only has one display port slot, which is only DP 1.2 technology. This is the thing that I feel dates the dock the most, and think it's rather annoying. But even DP 1.4 is going to be replaced by DP 2.0 soon. So the fact that the display port is only 1.2 is pretty annoying as I don't think it's future proof (it's already hamstringing your capabilities from a MacBook to a decent monitor, since it's the weak link between two DP 1.4 capable machines).3) The only memory card slot is for an SD card. I do appreciate that it's an SD UHS II slot, as that's the faster protocol for SD. But many prosumer and professional cameras are far beyond SD cards. I'm using XQD and/or CF express cards, personally, which are super fast. I wish I could just plug that into this thunderbolt doc and watch it blaze my data over. Instead, I either have to shoot on a slower card (SD) or buy an adapter for my XQD/CFExpress cards.4) This is minor, but having separate headphone and microphone input/outputs is a bit frustrating. All of the headphones I already have personally just use the one TRRS connection, so now I have to buy a splitter to use any of my headsets. Bummer. I wish they would have made one of the ports capable of both audio and microphone in one connection so it works regardless of your headset setup.Other than these things above, this works well!

Great but expensive dock
27 April 2021

I needed to find a way to interface a large array of devices to my main laptop without using a lot of ports to deal with the lack of ports on new machines. After quite a bit of research, I found this CalDigit TS3 Plus that taps the Thunderbolt 3 port on my computer. It is not inexpensive. Nevertheless, I must say it has performed very well for me. I moved a large USB hub that has all my interface devices like keyboard, mouse, webcam, printers, etc. from a USB port on the computer to the CalDigit. I also moved two external USB hard drives, along with my audio output to desktop speakers and a USB high end audio interface. I also moved two external USB hard drives, along with my audio output to desktop speakers and a USB high end audio interface. Every device but one printer moved successfully to the new CalDigit by simply plugging in the devices. That printer had to be reinstalled on the new USB port (through CalDigit). I was worried about the bandwidth, but the CalDigit seems to manage the Thunderbolt interface so that multiple devices can share the Thunderbolt bandwidth at the same time without interfering with each other. It also provides charging capability, but I need my regular power block since my laptop needs more current than the CalDigit provides for charging. However, there has not been any conflict between the power block and the CalDigit link for powering.I conclude that this is a very good dock for modern computers with Thunderbolt 3 ports but few others that connect to a lot of external devices. It has performed flawlessly, and was very easy to set up. While I did not run formal tests, it appears to effectively share the Thunderbird bandwidth. Just want one needs in a dock. Definitely recommended.

Has worked well for me
24 February 2023

I bought this for my HP 15.6 ZBook Studio G8 Mobile Workstation. The laptop has only one USB type A, which I use for a wireless mouse and keyboard. The other I/O ports are two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4.So far, the CalDigit TS3 has worked reliably for me. The user might have to open their computer settings for audio, however, if the sound isn't coming over desired speakers. The Settings will list a selection of audio devices. In summary, I'm very happy with my CalDigit TS3 Plus dock, and I recommend it to other computer users who need more I/O selections.

Many connections, but noisy!
20 January 2021

In principle I love this: charging AND enough connections for all my peripherals through a single Thunderbolt cable to my laptop. In practice, this has issues that prevented me from keeping it.First, an interoperability issue: my external displays would wake up every few minutes when connected to the hub, even when my laptop was sleeping. This does not happen when the external displays are connected directly to the laptop. Annoying, but I could live with this.Second, another interoperability issue: my webcam would occasionally fail to activate with it plugged into the hub (instead of directly into the laptop). More annoyingly, this would also usually cause a kernel panic in macOS Big Sur, hard-rebooting my laptop.Third: the hub emits a constant hum around ... MoreIn principle I love this: charging AND enough connections for all my peripherals through a single Thunderbolt cable to my laptop. The sounds get louder with a device plugged into the daisychain Thunderbolt port, and also when moving my USB mouse (!). The sound was driving me crazy enough that I exchanged it once, had the same issue with the replacement, and ultimately returnedthe hub. (Cheap capacitors?)If CalDigit made a Thunderbolt hub without these problems I would buy it in an instant. In the meantime, it’s back to 4 cables to my laptop...

This will last longer than my 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch

I highly recommend this Dock to anyone who's device has Thunderbolt 3 connection.Coming new Apple Macbook Pro and Thunderbolt 3, I had researched dozens of all-in-one hubs w/ PD (price range $15~$35) and various Thunderbolt 3 docks including Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Plus, OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock, as well as CalDigit's very own USB-C Pro Dock.Comparing the price difference between a Thunderbolt Dock and an all-in-one USB Hub, it was a no brainer that I went with an 8-in-one USB Hub. To my amaze it did the trick by keeping connection to all of my peripherals (laptop cooler, SD card, external SSD, external monitor) without failing, but with a caveat.CalDigit's TS3 Plus is at a different level compared with my $35 8-in-one USB Hub.First, CalDigit TS3 Plus is a ... MoreI highly recommend this Dock to anyone who's device has Thunderbolt 3 connection.Coming new Apple Macbook Pro and Thunderbolt 3, I had researched dozens of all-in-one hubs w/ PD (price range $15~$35) and various Thunderbolt 3 docks including Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Plus, OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock, as well as CalDigit's very own USB-C Pro Dock.Comparing the price difference between a Thunderbolt Dock and an all-in-one USB Hub, it was a no brainer that I went with an 8-in-one USB Hub. To my amaze it did the trick by keeping connection to all of my peripherals (laptop cooler, SD card, external SSD, external monitor) without failing, but with a caveat.CalDigit's TS3 Plus is at a different level compared with my $35 8-in-one USB Hub.First, CalDigit TS3 Plus is a Thunderbolt 3 Dock, meaning it can connect to your device via the included Thunderbolt 3 cable, which I'm sure you all know how much faster it is compared with USB 3.1 gen 2.Second, heat dissipation. My 8-in-one USB Hub gets *HOT* even after only a ten minutes of accessing my external SSD. And when I say HOT, I mean I can't rest my skin without the feeling I will get a burn. CalDigit TS3 Plus has no issue in this department.Lastly, the quality of construction feels (against everyone who is ready to bite me for my words) better than my MacBook Pro 16 inch. This is why although the price tag is almost ten times the cost of an all-in-one USB Hub, it is definitely worth it because it is just sturdy where it feels like it will last longer than my MacBook Pro.As a researcher I was skeptical when I read other numerous reviews online and on YouTube regarding CalDigit TS3 Plus as one of the best Thunderbolt 3 Docks out in the market, but after owning this for 2 weeks it is the best purchase I have made to my MacBook Pro set up.You cannot go wrong with this Dock. If I had known how great this was I would have gotten it for myself sooner.P.S. And yes, the entire enclosure except for the front panel is made from metal, so magnets will be attracted like in my photos.

Versatile Thunderbolt dock, but limitations audio + more
6 September 2021

I purchased this dock because my new laptop has only 2 included USB ports, which is way too few for the external devices i regularly use. I was hoping to connect all my external devices through the CalDigit. The ratings were very good, and, in general, this seems like a versatile dock. I have not tried external monitors. It seems to work well with external USB disk drives and USB sticks. The analog audio out is also working well for me. However, when I connected an iFi iDSD micro, which is a high end USB audio DAC, I had issues. While my computer recognized the device right away and connected to its driver, for some reason I get continuous static in the audio when I use the type A USB ports. While my computer recognized the device right away and connected to its driver, for some reason I get continuous static in the audio when I use the type A USB ports. I even exchanged for a new unit, and the new unit had the same issue. I did get it to work by using an Apple USB C to USB adapter and using the rear USB C port of the CalDigit. I read that this port is handled internally by a different chip. For some reason, that chip handles the iFi fine, but the other USB chip does not. I also tried connecting my powered USB hub into a USB A port on the CalDigit. The hub has many low speed devices such as mouse, keyboard, and printers. Unfortunately, I had weird problems with the keyboard no matter what I tried. I finally had to plug the USB hub into one of the 2 ports on the computer. Again, it seems like the CalDigit USB chip cannot handle an external USB hub.So, all in all, I have been able to work around the limitations to make the TS3 Plus satisfy my needs. However, I was disappointed that the USB A ports, at least, seem to have clear limitations. Anyone considering the CalDigit TS3 Plus should keep that in mind. This is a fairly expensive device that supposedly has higher end circuits inside to make sure it can handle a variety of devices and to insure that the bandwidth of the Thunderbolt port is effectively shared. Nevertheless, one cannot count on the ports acting entirely the same as direct ports on the attached computer.CalDigit was responsive. They said they could not guarantee than it would handle a USB hub, or a high end audio device. They did provide a replacement unit under warranty, but, as I noted, it had the same issues. They had warned me that might be the case. I just wish I had known these limitations before I made the purchase.

Works fine, but might kill hard drives
25 March 2024

I bought this in 2020 and it's mostly performed as expected. But a couple years ago I purchased an SSD that suddenly stopped mounting after one day, so I exchanged the drive and the same thing happened to the next one. Silly me, I chalked it up to poor QC on the part of the hard drive maker. Another year later, bought another SSD which worked fine plugged into my laptop, but as soon as I plugged it into the dock... you guessed it: kaput. I think one of the TB3 ports must be sending some kind of power surge to the drives and it's frying them. Of course, it's out of warranty and Caldigit won't replace it.This is really not acceptable, and even though the thing does everything else well, I'd rather it didn't work at all than kill hard drives, which could be (and has ... MoreI bought this in 2020 and it's mostly performed as expected.
