A switch is a device with which it is possible to connect computers into a (local area) network, provided your computers all have an appropriate networking device installed. Switches can be daisy chained to form larger networks and come in managed and unmanaged variaties. The unmanaged versions generally cannot filter data and will forward any data that is fed into them, so they are better suited for small networks. Switches are easy to set up (just plug in the network cables) and allow you to share printers, storage space and other network resources with your entire home or office network.

Have swapped out from my old setup with a ASUS GT-AC5300, at the time I bought the ASUS it was $699. I believe the package you get with this is much better price to performance. Out of the box this unit doesn't come with wireless, so if you require this you will either need to purchase a POE switch/Injector to run with this as none of 8 built in switch ports can do POE. These usually come with the Unifi WAP unless buying the 5 packs etc. This is a great option for people that want to make use of some of the included features like camera's etc with the Unifi Protect being able to pop a HDD in and off you go. If you have no use for the added Camera/VOIP/Access support you might be better off with one of the other routers they have which would also make adding on of ... MoreHave swapped out from my old setup with a ASUS GT-AC5300, at the time I bought the ASUS it was $699. One of the other things quickly noticed is the speed test it does during setup, this unit was able to get a much better down/up speed. The Asus could only get a max of 800Mbps down & 40Mbps Up, whereas this was able to get 980Mbps down & 49Mbps able to get me a bit more speed out of my Gigabit internet with the better hardware the DMP has over the Asus. Also something that the people that like to go further into what there network is doing is with the Unifi Controller that allows you to get an extremely detailed view of everything, taking from what someone else said to me when looking into the Ubiquiti gear is it's some of the closest to enterprise grade gear at home for a very good price.

I have been operating with SOHO router/Firewall/WI-FI combo devices for a decade, and finally gave up on them. there are simply too many functions for the meager CPU and RAM resources available on those devices. The Uquiti Dream Machine Pro has an Integrated switch, 2x10Gbps SFP's and a WAN port. It also has 4GB of RAM 16GB of onboard storage for its OS and software, and a Quad Core Processor operating at around 1.8Ghz. This is an excellent product, It doesn't stall and it features Packet Inspection as well. The setup is straightforward, and the Built in Switch only starts choking when switching around 8GBps. Truly a great product. Just bear in mind that if you want wireless connectivity you should add the Unifi antenna to the product which I intend to do in the ... MoreI have been operating with SOHO router/Firewall/WI-FI combo devices for a decade, and finally gave up on them. there are simply too many functions for the meager CPU and RAM resources available on those devices. The Uquiti Dream Machine Pro has an Integrated switch, 2x10Gbps SFP's and a WAN port. A welcome reprieve.

Fast 10G home networking... the unifi ecosystem seems to be decent so far. The only downside of it so far is the multi-wan setup, there's no load balancing option on the current version and the failover option doesn't "fail-back" when the main wan is working again

If you already own Ubiquiti equipment then this is a great addition. It does have its short comings like poor firewall customisation and plenty of simple but useful things that should be available but can only be accessed via SSH and not the UI. So read up before you buy...
ProsWell packaged and presented productSolid metal constructionWorks great providing high and consistent Network speeds!Cons - Small issues with initial setup
For a firewall / router that is aimed at SMB, it has some lacking features out of the box via the GUI. These features MAY be added via CLI but are NOT supported by the vendor. I would stick with pfsense/untangle etc. Unifi Switches and WIFI AP are exceptional BUT definitely lacking in the firewall dept
Awsome piece of kit I made the plunge and also bought 3 aps and 5 cameras. Absolutely blown away!
Set up was a bit interested but this is well documented online. As I have a Fiber to the Node NBN connection I had to do the following, power cycle the modem with it unplugged from the UDM Pro, wait til it was reconnected to the internet (status lights are your friend here!), then plug the modem back into the WAN port of the UDM Pro. Hope this helps people get going with it if you're having issues. The app is great for basic set up and status checking although if you want to really harness the power of the UDM Pro you'll need to log into the web interface. My particular use case currently has no UniFi AP's but does have a G3 Flex camera set up, this was quick fast and efficient to get this up and running though UniFi Protect which is included in the UDM Pro.Can't ... MoreSet up was a bit interested but this is well documented online. The Unify Dream Machine Pro (UDMPro) is a great router with an intriguing user interface. Coming from a network where everything was managed by a Netgear Orbi router, this certainly was a step up. (Note: The Orbi still is used to provide WiFi signal, as the UDMPro does not provide WiFi.)Let's be clear: I am a networking "noob" with lots of enthusiam for networking and little detailed understanding of it. :-)Having the UDMPro manage my network allowed me to crack down harder on attacks on my home NAS and helped me identify configuration issues in my home network. The interface, while intriguing, takes a lot of getting used to - and doesn't offer as much insigth as it could. For one, Unifi still is working on the interface software, making it seem a bit unstable ... MoreThe Unify Dream Machine Pro (UDMPro) is a great router with an intriguing user interface. The interface, while intriguing, takes a lot of getting used to - and doesn't offer as much insigth as it could. For one, Unifi still is working on the interface software, making it seem a bit unstable at time. (They even have a message in their interface telling you to switch to the earlier version, if you cannot find some features. And indeed, I find myself switching back and forth between the interface versions (which is possible in the Settings menu)).Additionally, the UDMPro becomes really powerful, when you dig deeper into the data it collects. That sadly is only really possible through a third party tool. I used "UniFi-Poller" and the "UniFi-Poller" Grafana Dashboards. Setting these up takes some technical expertise, but once you do, you have huge range of additional data insights that may help you assess the health of your network.I have used this and successfully troubleshooted issues I had with TPG. Before using the UDMPro, I have been in touch with TPG's support multiple times to find out why my internet dropped out frequently. Over a year, we couldn't identify the root cause of this. A week after I had the UDMPro set up with the Grafana dashboards, I was able to pin-point IP address conflicts that I hadn't been aware of and that had been affecting the whole network.I haven't used the security camera/"unifi protect" features. I only use it as a router. Depending on the settings you use, the device can be quite noisy. I have the threat management set to "balanced", which allows me to keep this device in a dining room without it creating any noticable noise. If you have it do more (e.g. I had the threat management set to "Maximum Protection" at first), you do notice quite a lot of noise coming from the fans. It's a great device for a great price - though I sometimes wonder if looking into pfSense or the like for routing and protection would have been a better alternative.
I replaced my consumer-level router (which I was replacing on a frequent basis due to frustrating dropouts) with a pro-router and I couldn't be happier. The shift to hybrid working conditions demands a stable and reliable business-grade router and this one ticks the boxes. This router is simple to use with plug and play and its reliability has been excellent with an uptime of 100% to date. I will never invest in a consumer-level router again.
