The product is a great idea and it is good in theory. The only problem is Unifi put an extremely slow processor in it and it can barely do what it was made for. The interface is extremely slow to load and is unreliable. It can take easily 10 minutes to boot. I recommended this to a client and I feel bad that I did. Even when I had to configure it, it took a long time. The only way to make it usable is to turn off traffic management and then the CPU lowers down enough to do the routing and interface. Also, it only supports 4 other devices as the 5 limit includes the actual Express.I rang the store and missed the return date by 2 days so can't return it so will just have to make do with it for the client. Do yourself a favour and buy a Ubiquiti UCG-Ultra Cloud ... MoreThe product is a great idea and it is good in theory. Do yourself a favour and buy a Ubiquiti UCG-Ultra Cloud Gateway Ultra and a Unifi Access point like a U6 Pro or Lite if you're on a budget instead of this. It's not worth it whilst its software is so slow. Google Unifi Express Slow and you will see others have the same issue and Unifi aren't able to speed it up do to the processor in it. Hopefully they release a V2 one day.

This product is a complete and abysmal failure for Ubiquiti. It does not function as advertised. I bought two units; one was unmanageable upon opening the box and had to be sent in to the factory for replacement. Attempting this with two units, I've tried using them as non-meshed wired access points. *IF* (and it is a big IF), you can even establish this as the mode, it is likely a day later it will have failed completely, or they now become meshed as if this is a meshed access point. My two units have been disposed of in the garbage; shame on me for buying a new model of a Ubiquiti product. By the way, the company saves money by not writing ANY support documentation on their products, so you'll have to tinker around, google, visit forums etc if you have odd behavior or need to figure out a figure or setting.

This was my first Ubiquiti device. I have already added other devices to my home network to accompany the UniFi Express. An extremely easy setup and adoption process was fantastic. I would recommend to anybody that wants to enter the Ubiquiti ecosystem. I am so glad I did and will continue to add more devices to my home network!

Great AP, terrible Cloud Gateway
9 August 2024

If you plan to use this as a Unifi Cloud Gateway, this isn't the device for you, it is just not powerful enough. I do not have a complicated network, it is ~30 devices, 1 Flex mini switch and another Express just as a mesh AP. The main Express unit functions as my Cloud Gateway running the Unifi OS/network software. It runs too hot to touch and is constantly at 95% CPU utilization. Most of the time the network interface is not accessible. The only way to access it is to unplug the Express and wait a few minutes for it to cool down. It will then be accessible for a day or two and then again becomes unusable. If I had just done some Google searches (which you should do), I would have seen how common this issue is. Ubiquiti has been recommending software updates for the last few months months, which is what they told me to do when I emailed them. I switched to early access which did nothing. So clearly it's an underlying hardware issue, the Express hardware just isn't good enough to function as a Unifi gateway. Knowing what I know now, I would probably have gotten a Cloud Gateway Ultra and then a U7/U6 AP for WiFi. Slightly more expensive but it would have at least worked as intended. When used purely as an AP, the Express functions just fine but then you might as well get a U6/U7.

Highly recommend!
4 September 2024

I install UniFi equipment for several customers and was using a UniFi Cloud Key for controlling my AP network. Unfortunately the Cloud Key started flaking out after many years of use so I decided to purchase and install this UniFi Express. Features out the wazoo and easy to set up just like the Dream Machine SE units I deploy for my customers. Highly recommend this unit for home or small business use.

Only for simple use cases
19 February 2024

I purchased one of these to use when taking an extended trip for several months. After it arrived, I found it to be very underpowered compared with other Ubiquiti equipment. Even restarting it or updating it talk forever. When it came time to use the built in VPN capability I was very underwhelmed. I ended up returning it in the hopes that I can get a UniFi Dream router in stock. I’m really sad, because this box is perfect, they just decided to put in an underpowered cpu if you look at the specs. If you don’t need more than say 300mbit and have a simple use case, this should work. But for any advanced use case or vpn, look at something else.

Review of Ubiquiti UX WiFi 6 Access Point
2 September 2024

The product itself is great. I’m disappointed that I needed it, but it’s a more unique set of circumstances. If I was starting a home WiFi network from scratch this would be fantastic. However, I’m not. This has been required to fill a gap where I need an Ethernet port but can’t run one. Powerline adapters keep failing and I need a reliable connection point. This fills the gap perfectly, it just expensive for what I need it for. However, the price point would be great if this was the basis for my network. It’s just unfortunate that it isn’t.

Stopped working first day
28 February 2024

I helped a client set this up. Had to power it down to move it the first day. It never worked again. Constant rebooting even after a factory reset and readoption. No power down button. Apparently no internal battery or large capacitor to keep memory uncorrupted during power outages. Looks like UniFi has unlearned hard one lessons from early cloud keys.

UniFi’s worst product

I’m usually ubiquiti’s biggest proponent and I bought this product directly from ubiquiti day one of its release in 2023. After pulling my hair out after a month of use, and using the official release firmware (updated since purchase) I can unequivocally state that this product doesn’t work as advertised. The internet routing speed dwindles after a few days to c. 100mbps, down from ~930mbps (using computers plugged directly into the lan port). The unit will also freeze and overheat. If you want to spend a few minutes on UniFi’s official forums you find dozens of people with the same issues. UniFi is not acknowledging this publicly. Their support team is good willing and tries to help but can’t fix anything. My advice; get something else. It’s been rock solid since installation, routing IPTV on multicast, and even had ipv6 immediately. The UniFi couldn’t get IPv6 working, and a few other things like DDNS never worked.

Works, so far
8 March 2024

Bought it as a backup to a UDM (Ubiquiti Dream Machine). I've already had 1 UDM fail (completely unresponsive) and recently the current UDM randomly and frequently becoming unresponsive in the middle of the night unless power cycled. Fix was to factory reset and reconfigure from scratch. The UniFi Express appears to work with most or enough of the config from the UDM to serve as an emergency replacement or for travel use. Thinking of setting it up isolated for Teleport VPN use.
