A Delightful Variety of Chai Blends

I can brew the leaves three times and still get extraordinary flavor. The tea is smooth and sweet on its own, but also delicious with the addition of a hint of half/half and/or sugar.Earl Grey-- This is a smooth, well-balanced blend. The bergamot is at the forefront but doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. It is nice on its own but also tastes good with a big splash of half-and-half. A light touch of sugar helps balance the flavors, but too much sugar will overwhelm the spices. It is just slightly astringent, but not at all bitter. Everyone in the family--including the picky 9-year old, enjoyed this one.Assam--This blend had a slightly spicier profile than the Earl Grey, though it lists the same ingredients (in different order). It has a good, bold cinnamon flavor, but it's not overwhelming (and definitely not the disgusting flavor of Red Hots--this likely uses Vietnamese cinnamon). The cardamom is listed as the first ingredient, but it wasn't especially pronounced to me. I feel like I had to steep this a little longer than recommended to get the flavor I prefer. It was good on its own but slightly better with just a very light splash of half-and-half. A pinch of sugar also brought out the spices, but anything more overwhelms them. This tea was just as good (if not better) when I used the same tea in a second pot.Fennel--I was a little leery of this one at first. I was worried that the fennel would overpower the other flavors. Truth be told, I don't know that I tasted the fennel at all, though the seeds were definitely present. This was a much, much milder tea than the Assam or Earl Grey. While it was good, I didn't think the spices were prominent enough. It's still better than any blend I've tried to make on my own, and I will use it all up, but I will not re-order this particular blend.Turmeric--This is labelled as a "tisane" where the other blends are labelled as chais. There is no actual tea listed in the ingredients. It had a decent scent, but the taste was very "meh." It wasn't actually horrible, but it wasn't good, either. Neither the teen nor I wanted to finish a cup, but the hubster kind of liked it and finished it off after adding sugar. We have enough to make another small pot--we won't.Sweet Cinnamon--The scent is a lovely cinnamon. The flavor is like Red Hots. I didn't even both trying to add sugar or cream; I can't with this type of cinnamon. It's probably good cinnamon--just not for me. The teen and husband both concurred.Original Chai--An excellent blend. It had all the notes I'm looking for in chai in a good black tea base. It's good cold (as you discover when you brew tea while cleaning house and get caught up in your work). I really liked this one, but it makes me super excited to try the double chai. The teen and hubs liked this one, too.Kashmiri Kahwa Masala Chai--I generally prefer black tea over green, and this blend certainly didn't change my mind. I felt like this was a much weaker tea (probably because it's green) that required a lot more loose tea and a longer steeping time to basically still taste like hot water had been poured over a light blend. The flavor of the tea just wasn't strong enough.Saffron--After trying the turmeric and fennel, I didn't have high hopes for the saffron tea. While I've had saffron in foods, I don't actually know what it tastes like on its own, so didn't know how it would affect the flavor profile. While I still don't know what it tastes like on its own, I can say that this is, hands down, my favorite chai. The flavors were perfectly balanced and it was like there were practicall no tannins in it at all. The cup brews nicely and I could get three brews out of the leaves before the flavor became too weak to reuse. This is the tea that I will be reordering in a larger packet.

Only thing I would suggest is offering an assortment of black teas only and a separate assortment of green teas. I’m just not a fan of green teas. But thank you for sending this along. I am craving several I tried and am going to end up having to order some! Clever you!

Also, there is very little if any tea "dust" when I put a couple teaspoons into the tea caddy. I typically rinse any tea under hot water for 10 seconds to wash off the "dust" before brewing. These Vadham teas have so little tea "dust" that it speaks volumes for the care in packing and shipping. You are truly getting premium tea leaves that have been recently picked and shipped with care.I am eager to share this Darjeeling sampler with my family when they come to visit next week. We are all avid Darjeeling tea drinkers, and I will be curious to know which one(s) they prefer, cuz I'll likely follow that up with a gift order of Vadham teas!

Flavorful samples and a great tea sampler. Definitely worth it for the price.
16 October 2019

Ordered this sampler a few months ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors. All of them are strong in flavor and the aromas are nice. I was surprised that some of the teas came in rolled up balls, but I didn't notice any difference in quality vs a local loose leaf tea that I bought. I generally like black teas and this was a great way to try different types of chai. The flavor is strong enough that you can resteep for a second cup and get a slightly less flavorful cup of tea. If you're on your last tea leaves for a specific sampler, that may be a good idea for you. My favorites were the original chai, earl grey, saffron, assam, and the cardamom. The fennel and turmeric I didn't like as much, but my friend did so she had no problem finishing them. I liked the ... MoreOrdered this sampler a few months ago. I liked the rest of the flavors, also, and I have yet to try the Kashmiri Kahwa but I bet it will be great. This is a great gift for tea lovers or people who want to try different chai flavors. For what you get, the price is worth it. I plan on ordering the earl grey chai again.Pros:- Strong and deep flavor- Smooth- Nice aroma- Great variety- Good sampler to start with and be exposed to flavors- Very fast shipping- Tea came in a large sealed bag, with smaller sealed bags containing the separate teas. It kept the tea leaves nicely.- Each tea envelope had instructions on how much to add, how long, and what temperature water to use. It's nice because I'm fairly new to steeping loose leaf teas.Cons:- On the pricier end but worth it- If you really enjoy the tea you'll go through the samplers fastMake sure you like strong teas before you order this, or you may not like this sampler as much (if you like weaker teas it's better to go for their other samplers).

Mediocre Overly Roasted Teas with Twigs, Cut Leaves, and Inconsistent Oxidation
25 June 2020

Like many reviewers on this site, I am a a huge fan of Chinese teas and am used to very high quality teas sourced by Global Tea Hut, Mei Leaf, and Teavivre. Looking to expand into Indian varieties of tea, I checked out Vadham after being impressed and touched by the quality of their marketing materials. I was also happy to find out they are committed to climate neutral and plastic neutral practices. Needless to say, I was excited.I brewed all teas Gongfu style at different temperatures in several different sessions. Unfortunately, every single one besides the 'muscateel' variety had a somewhat 'boring' overly roasted and monochromatic taste. These teas lacked the nuance and complexity of other teas I've had and even though I really wanted to like them, after days of ... MoreLike many reviewers on this site, I am a a huge fan of Chinese teas and am used to very high quality teas sourced by Global Tea Hut, Mei Leaf, and Teavivre. Needless to say, I was excited.I brewed all teas Gongfu style at different temperatures in several different sessions. Unfortunately, every single one besides the 'muscateel' variety had a somewhat 'boring' overly roasted and monochromatic taste. These teas lacked the nuance and complexity of other teas I've had and even though I really wanted to like them, after days of exploration, I simply didn't.I mean no disrespect to the tea, the farmers, and everyone else involved, it just seems like these teas aren't prepared with the same level of care and skill that Chinese teas are (despite noble intentions). The quality of the material was also visibly lower than the other Chinese teas I've had. Almost every tea is not a full-leaf tea. Many are chopped up and many even have twigs in them (see picture). The oxidation (a Darjeeling is technically an oolong) on the leaves (which appears as the reddish parts) is inconsistent. This can be a good sign of human work instead of machine work, but in this case, I'm not confident it indicates that. If you just look at the leaves you can see why they taste the way they do.The tea in the picture is graded at SFTGFOP1 - Which is supposed to be the highest grade. Yet, in the higher standard of Chinese grading, these would probably be considered lower grade teas. Moreover, unlike many of the other companies I've mentioned, there is very little information on the Vadham website about the cultivars, climate, environment, farmers, altitude, etc. of the sourced teas. This is always a red flag that quality is being compromised somewhere. While these teas are known for their astringency, brewing too hot makes this flavor dominate the tea. It seems the brewing instructions would be better suited to lower temperatures if you wanted to avoid this astringency. The white tea lost its flavor after the first two steepings, while a similarly priced Shou Mei from Teavivre tastes delicious well into 5-7 steepings. All in all, the only tea I found worth its price was 'muscateel.' Everything else felt a bit like a disappointment compared to similarly priced high quality Chinese teas from Teavivre, Mei Leaf, or Global Tea Hut.I will continue to build a relationship with these teas and explore Indian teas in general, but I think my search for high quality Indian tea is just beginning.

More Than Delicious

I was already predisposed to like Vahdam teas to begin with, but I must say the more I drink them the more I like them. I ordered quite a lot of samples to try and have not yet made my way through them all, but the most noticable thing each time I try one is the incredible balace of flavours. This is particularly noticable in the chai, but even the Earl Grey or Darjeeling teas, where they are from a specific estate, there's an incredible distinctiveness and clarity to each one.I am actually having a bit of trouble readjusting my proprtions and steeping times; it's very easy to over-steep these teas and lose that perfect Darjeeling balance point. You need fewer leaves then you think, and can steep it for longer than seems wise without getting bitter. You need fewer leaves then you think, and can steep it for longer than seems wise without getting bitter. At this moment I'm drinking Giddapahar Exotic Darjeeling Spring Black Tea. The scent wafts at you when you open it, in a way I've only encountered with supremely fresh Darjeeling (I worked at Canadian Tea store for 2 years, Davids Tea). The leaves have green in them, the chlorophyll is still there. The tea liquor itself is almost glossy, with a wonderfully clear golden hue. This is different from the High Mountain Darjeeling Oolong, which has the rich smoothness of most oolongs, yet is not like any other Oolong Ive ever had. It was almost evenly split between the richness of an Oolong and the piquancy of a Darjeeling, and if the bag had not been labelled, I would not be able to tell you what it was. I am very much looking forward to trying the Darjeeling Masala Chai (Masala Chai from this company is out of this world. I wasn't even a big chai fan but I sure am now!). Not all of the Darjeeling teas in the sampler are single estate; some seem to be blends. That's almost a relief, as so much choice can be too much for me first thing in the morning!I still have to try Spring Gold, Darjeeling Premium Black, Darjeeling Daily (Summer), Castleton Premium Darjeeling (Spring), Muscatel (Imperial) And Darjeel...

Not all samples are equal.
2 April 2019

I am an avid tea drinker with many years of experience, although I've been drinking Chinese teas almost exclusively till recentry, when my favorite tea supplier JK Teashop "broke bad" out of sudden and stopped sending out merchandise while still kindly accepting my payments, so it was the turning point when I realized I need to look for a new supplier of fresh, gourmet, high grade teas for reasonable price - which is not an easy task at all. After trying few eBay sellers, I found one Indian seller from Darjeeling area, selling local teas, good quality, but selling in quantities of 500gr and up, which is very prohibitive when you want to try lots of different types. The company's story and mission is compelling and touching, you just feel like you want to help these guys. I liked that there is the picking date on the package in addition to expiration date. Really nice. I pick one sample "Castleton Darjeeling", steep it carefully, following all the instructions that are on the package. Then pour it into fine yixing tea cup and bring it to my nose, anticipating wonderful sweet fruitty winey aroma of a good Darjeeling tea... Nothing like that. No any smell at all. Well, when I sniff in thoroughly, I am able to distinguish a faint smell of cow's crap, and that's about it. Taste is not any better, like hot water with some bitterness.I am confused and outraged - isn't is supposed to be a good tea? Pretty expensive? All these positive reviews?I am immediately trying to file return through Amazon, and find out that grocery items are non-returnable. I am completely berserking by now, and the whole genious crime scheme is completely clear to me: they just pack small portions of cow's dung into pretty packages and sell them as fine tea to ignorant American coffee drinkers, which supposingly enjoy it, otherwise how would you explain high ratings?I wrote an angry message to the company, requesting immediate satisfaction. They offered to me a pack of free tea as a gift. More of the same cow's excrements? No thanks, better give me my money back. They gave me my money back.Next day I was getting ready to get rid of the rest of the samples, and out of curiosity decided to try another sample. It was "Imperial Muscatel"... OMG, the moment I poured water into the pot with tea, I realized how wrong and unfair I was all that time. I didn't even bend down to smell the tea, but the divine, exqisite, sweet-fruitty, even Virginia-tobacco alike aroma reached my nostrils. I enjoyed this cup profoundly. It was like one of the best tea cups of my life, totally unexpected and yet intense pleasure.I messaged the company right away, offering returning the refund they paid me. They kindly answered that I can keep the refund and still enjoy the teas. Or, keep the teas and enjoy money, whatever I think at that point they assumed that they are dealing with a client of a psychiatric clinic.Well, at least I admit it was idiotic of me to base my premature judgement on one sample only.I am not done trying the rest of samples, but I tasted some more... Not as bad as the first, not as good as the second sample, they all are very decent teas.

Not all samples are equal.

Strong, Impressive Flavors for True Chai Lovers
20 April 2020

I am hard to please when it comes to chai. I want a flavor that wakes up my senses and lingers on my tongue. This is it! I got the variety pack, thinking I would try them all and pick my favorite. But I have loved them all. They are each slightly different and bring a unique flavor to the forefront, while still resting in the security of a good, solid chai base. The presentation is beautiful - it would make a great gift. And I love the info included about the company - packing the teas fresh from the field and being able to provide good living wages to the workers. They even have set up a program using 1% of their profits for the education of the tea workers.Even if you don't care about a good company with good working conditions and fair wages, you will still love ... MoreI am hard to please when it comes to chai. It seriously makes my morning as I prepare myself a cup. I've been using 1 tsp. per cup (as per the instructions) and then doing a second soak of the tea leaves in half as much water as its calls for. The second cup is weaker, but still good. But that first strong cup is amazing. And I admit that I am quite critical when it comes to chai teas, often judging my local coffee shops based on the strength of their chai offerings. You won't regret this. I am already thinking of all my chai-loving friends who might be excited to receive a pack of this tea at their doorstep to bring a little cheer and a big burst of flavor to these tough days of isolation. Cheers!

Wait! What am I drinking?...
6 March 2017

I honestly don't know, but I think I love it. Let me explain...I have a box in front of me with a label for Himalayan Oolong Tea and no recollection of ordering it. After opening the well-packed vacuum-sealed bag of tea leaves, I have a label the company brilliantly provided along with an empty resealable bag; that label - intended to remind me of which tea I'm grabbing a month from now after I transfer the leaves to the (again-brilliant storage bag) - says "Himalayan Imperial Oolong Tea". I didn't order that, either. Whatever this stuff is that I'm drinking, though, is definitely an Oolong and it's definitely one of the finest and freshest tasting teas I've had ever. Ever. I mean it.A somewhat amused effort to discover the true identity of the tea I am enjoying so much led me to discover the VERY fine print on the bottom of the box, positioned just under the bar code Amazon probably uses to verify and fill orders - it states: VAHDAM, Himalayan Flowery Oolong Tea. Yep. I ordered that, and if that's what I'm drinking, it's marvelous. It truly doesn't matter to me about the labeling issue, (other than ensuring that I'm able to re-order the correct type of tea when I find the ones I love this well), because I'm not that educated about the nuances of tea - I just know when I like something. The next person who sees a 5 Star review and decides to try Vahdam's Teas may be extremely educated about teas and they may make a negative decision about the company overall, and I don't want to see that happen. The information about the company included with my purchase gives a delightful description of the company's goals and mission, and what they're providing to their customers is some really great tasting tea.The quality of the tea is what matters, and that same fine print at the bottom of the box shows that it was PICKED in September of 2017. I have eggs in my refrigerator older than that. The ability to get tea that fresh from the fields to the processing masters to packaging/shipping and onto Amazon's shelves for delivery so quickly is beyond impressive.Vahdam needs to spend a little time focusing on the details and making sure that all teas are properly labeled and/or ensuring that Amazon is delivering what Vahdam's customers are ordering. They can afford to devote the time to this type of detailed housekeeping...they have already got the production of great tea down pat!
