After trying individual sticks of different brands, I splurged on a Van Gogh set of 60, and am So Happy with them! Their pigment load, the purity of the colors, the fact that they offer two values of most colors (something that only these & the very expensive Holbeins do!!!), the consistency of feel from one stick to another, and the fact that their colors are true and they do not use ridiculous complex pigment blends (like some of the Cray Pas) means they work beautifully over my Golden acrylics - plus they have a lovely feel when put on a surface ... not too hard and not too soft. Just right for me. And Blick's price on the set of 60 is an unbelievable value! :)

I have been sampling different oil pastels, students' and artists' quality. Some sellers classify these Van Gogh's oil pastels as student, but other sellers as artist quality. The pigments are listed, and seem good. Not sure about the medium used in the stick, if it is truly achival. But they behave wonderfully. Great for massing in, getting a sharp edge. They are wonderful as an underlayer for Sennelier and Neopastel - unlike Sakura Specialist as a base layer - blending beautifully. So affordable!

You will also notice a difference in size. The Neopastels and the Sennelier sticks are smaller than the other two. Not as small as a school grade oil pastel but, man, for the price, they should be bigger. I do have to commend Sennelier for having a small primary color set that is fairly inexpensive so you can try it out. The Neocolors I had to buy individually. So in terms of Quality the Neocolors and the Sennelier are top quality for serious artists wanting to use such a convenient tool, but there are better prices for quality out there. The Van Gogh's I cannot recommend as a serious art tool except for under paintings (to stretch out the expensive sets) and for sketching.#sweepstakes
I used the Van-Gogh line of oil pastels in this piece more or less in the skin tones. As you can see in the sample image, I had messed up trying to use a black color (of which is not very forgivable), in they eyes and although this was a mistake on my part I'm not giving these a negative review. The cost was only slightly higher than what I use. The quality on the other hand is well questionable in that they were a little hard to blend with other colors and brands. Of course that is to say that it may have been due to the amount of the binding agent used in them. They all vary in different colors as well as brands. I'm only giving this review with an average on price/quality simply because I was only trying out a few of the many colors in the Van-Gogh line up.In this drawing/painting I blended the pastels with blending stumps on smooth colored pencil paper (114 lb.) and that plays a factor in how the colors go down. I would suggest that if you haven't ever used these before, do what I did and purchase a few individual colors to see how you like them, just do a sample piece to see how they blend with others first before starting a new painting.
I do art full-time, mostly dry pastel sticks, and I wanted to try oil pastels. The VanGogh are the third kind I've had and I liked them so well I bought the set of 60. Nice feel, they go on easy with a light touch and go on thick, almost impasto with lots of pressure. You must go from dark to light for best layering and mixing results. There's some lifting of prior colors as I get to multiple layers and the limits to the thickness, but this isn't anything I've not been able to learn to control with practice.If there were anything bad to say it would be I feel I need to wear gloves because after a while the color will come off onto my hands as my body heat softens the outer layer. Once I put on gloves, all has been great.

Because essential tremors started in my 60's and has progressed to the point I can hardly sign my name, I thought my art work was a thing of the past. Then I heard of oil pastels and decided to give them a try. To my amazement, the way the colors blend was like a revolution and I started work on an animal series that has rekindled my passion for art. Thank you so much and I plan to add to my set of twenty-four pigments I originally purchased.
I have never used oil pastels until I tried these. I purchased the box of 60 with higher expectations of workability in blending, but maybe that is just something I will have to work at since I have no prior experience with oil pastels. Maybe I should have ordered a softer pastel or read more about real oil pastels before purchasing this set. They seem a bit flaky, waxy, and like there is a whitish haze on the sticks. I am not sure if that is normal. The box arrived slightly damaged and two pastels were missing, but they were replaced promptly after I called Customer service. Customer service is good.
