I'm going to start this review by saying that I am just a normal guy that wanted a 120" screen for movies and games in his basement. I have never owned a projector before, I did not have what I thought were the proper room dimensions to accommodate a ceiling-mount traditional bulb projector. Other similar options are $1k-3k more expensive, so, after much deliberation, I chose to just bite the bullet and buy this thing.First thing's first: I am pretty sure I received a returned and "gently-used" unit from Amazon via VAVA-US. The box looked a bit "used," the remote had the batteries in it already, and after the first power-on, I did not get a setup wizard, the image was flipped, and the remote was paired. I was about to flip a table, but I calmed down because the image staring back at me was quite impressive. This item has only been out for less than a year, and everything is working, so I will just have to assume that there is not many, if any, hours on the laser and try to stay positive. However, I think that's a bit of a shame if they are just repackaging returned units and sending them back out. This is my most major concern with the purchase, because, from other reviewers, it seems VAVA's US "support" is an auto-forward to a random answering machine sitting somewhere in China.Either way, on to why I bought this thing in the first place; this thing produces a gorgeous picture. I am projecting about a 120" diagonal image onto a white/cream painted little-to-no textured wall with no proper screen (yet). The room has no windows, and with the door closed it is pitch black. The room lights up from the brightness of this thing and the image is just incredibly detailed. Right now, the image gets slightly washed out when it gets very bright, but I am sure that will be fixed with a proper screen and some blacking-out of the room.I did not buy this for its "smart" properties, and honestly I would only connect to your network via a wired ethernet connection and only when checking for firmware updates (which there was one after turning on). It's clearly running Android, and it is quite sloppily put together. Changing the image settings in the normal main screen settings menu does not seem to do anything. Makes total sense right? You have to go to the input source and hold down the menu button on the remote and a side menu comes up and changing those values actually alter the image. I haven't touched the "App store" or anything. Use a Roku, Apple TV, Xbox, whatever. I would avoid the built-in stuff.With proper calibration (you can find some help on reviews for this thing on some websites) you can definitely squeeze some very accurate color out of this thing. I actually used episodes of The Simpsons to help tune in the color accuracy I was looking for, based on my LG OLED that is my daily driver TV. Once I did that, everything else looks great now. I am using a Denon AVR which has 4K and HDR capabilities at 60Hz, and it works just fine with this projector. The Xbox One X is set to 4K HDR, and the projector gets a 4K HDR signal. When you hold down the menu button and there is an option to ensure HDMI 2.0 is enabled. Also, in the picture settings, you can turn HDR on, off, or to auto mode. Auto seems to detect HDR signals correctly from my minimal testing.If you are considering this for gaming, IGNORE anyone who is saying the input lag on this makes games unplayable. Literally all I have been doing is playing Xbox One X on this thing, and I experience no issues with regards to input lag. Is it as quick as my LG OLED? No. But I'll give it a pass for giving me an additional 65" of viewing pleasure. This was a major concern of mine based on other reviewers, and I am happy to report that they are making mountains out of molehills.So, everything has been positive (mostly) so far. Here are some negatives. When there is fast motion on the X-axis, there is a very noticeable "wavy" look to the top center part of image. This is very obvious in gaming, when you can control the camera and you make it move left or right quickly. I assume this is an artifact of the laser projection in some way, and it does not stand-out, meaning, I notice it only when I think about noticing it and focus on the top-center of the image.The eye protection mode doesn't seem to be as good as I hoped. It definitely notices when I walk up to it, but usually not quickly enough to turn the laser off before it would have gotten into my eyes. Also, this thing has to sit low to the ground to get a f

Ended up going with the Optoma CinemaX P2 due to a light failure in this one during the return window and another not being in stock to swap it with, but I would have kept it, if there had it. While in use, the image quality was very good. The best part was the contrast balance edge to edge. Getting the screen squared up and in-focus when placement is off center takes a bit of work, but not difficult and works well. Sound quality of the built in sound bar was pretty impressive. Better than many basic sound bars you can buy, but still recommend a full Atmos setup. UST projectors must be very close to and slightly above or below the screen area, so it makes setup a little more difficult if you’ve never had one before. Make sure you study that part if not familiar with ... I truly expected the Vava to blow my LG away, it did not, as a matter of fact, some aspects of the LG are far superior. I should be able to adjust my color, contrast and sharpness to be well beyond my preferences, the Vava doesn't do that. This is extremely important as I'm a sports fan and enjoy older shows/movies. The apps you can load are very limited. I loaded a few non subscription necessary apps, none of them worked well. Most were apps I've never head of but YouTube would not play at all. Didn't fool with it since I was going to return the projector. The speakers are amazing and loud however again they failed by not providing any individual bass and treble controls. Just the standard "movie", "sports", "normal auto settings. Overall, it's not worth the cost vs other projectors I've seen.

I have had this projector for about a month now, and currently have it paired with an Elite Screens 120" Cinewhite screen. Overall, I love this projector. With that said, here are some details I found if you are considering this projector:1) EASY SETUP: For 120" screen, I have it about 12" away from the wall and about 11" below the bottom of the screen. Just project your image on the wall first so you have a good idea where to mount your screen. It is then easy to "fine tune" the picture using the keystone correction in the menu.2) PICTURE QUALITY: With the Elite Screens Cinewhite screen (has a gain of 1.1), in LOW LIGHT the picture is VERY GOOD, contrast is excellent, colors are vibrant and picture is crisp and sharp. This projector will not be as bright and vivid as a good 4K TV, but it's contrast is exceptional, and with the right screen it should be very close (and 120"!).3) SOUND: The built in soundbar does sound nice, significantly better than TVs I have had. Admittedly though, I only listed to it for a few minutes, as I have the HDMI of all of my devices running through my AVR and use that for sound.4) FAN NOISE: In it's "normal" picture mode, the fans run at a low speed, and I don't notice the fan sound. If I put the picture brightness in "high", the fans will cycle from slow to high speed, and you can hear the fans a little more. Again, not really noticeable if you are watching anything with reasonable volume, and not at all noticeable when you turn up the volume (movies, etc).WISHLIST: a) REMOTE CONTROL: This comes with a blue-tooth remote, which works just fine. My only wish is that it integrated with smart home devices (Alexa, etc), as I have most of my house setup this way. So far, I have not been able to find a solution to this. b) DISPLAY BRIGHT MODE: In settings, you can change the display mode to "Bright", which adds just a bit more "pop" to the picture, but it resets to standard mode once you turn off the unit, so you need to go to the menu every time you want to go back to Bright mode.SUMMARY: Overall, as stated, I love this projector and highly recommend it. The price is far below anyone else, with the Optoma being the only closely priced unit I could find, but still $600 more (I didn't consider the Xiaomi or other Chinese brands that, as of now, aren't readily available and have menus and apps partially in Chinese). I highly recommend you look at various YouTube reviews of this and other projectors to give you a better sense if this is right for you. GOOD LUCK!

It was a 65" display and my mount was about 6' of the ground so getting it in place by myself ******.So as I was going through options for a replacement, I wanted to go bigger but remembered the pain of setting it all up. I researched a ton and came back across UST projectors. I had encountered this VAVA projector before but only through crowd funding so I chose to wait.I had a decent TV stand that was fairly high up. My bedroom ceiling is 10ft plus it's vaulted so I had a lot of height to work with. And realizing its cost, I was incredibly cautious removing it from the Styrofoam it was packed in.After the area I planned to use it in was set up, It was only about 20 minutes from unboxing to operation. I ran the cables to hook it up to my Xbox, directv receiver and my newly acquired roku ultra (since I had used the roku tv atmosphere, I wanted something familiar and easy). The system update was the longest process as the download was over 500gb. No idea why.I logged into my wifi, logged the roku into my roku account and I was good to go. I intentionally bought the projector first before the screen or any additional audio so I could use the core of the system to figure out what I wanted and what would work.The picture is gorgeous, and the remote paired immediately. I used the remote to turn the unit on for the first time so that process is smooth. With my bedroom lamps at 50%, the picture is clear and bright even on my textured wall.The sound is better than I expected. I had a pretty standard LG sound bar that I'm sure a ton of you have. With the sub and the two back channel speakers. Good sound for sure. This unit performs pretty dang well. I keep the volume around 50% and it's plenty loud and full. I plan on upgrading this soon, but for those of you that don't want that additional cost, this unit isn't bad at all for audio. I was very impressed with the volume and quality.On that note as well, my roku immediately recognized this device and the roku ultra remote can control the volume and power. No configuration at all. I went through the configuration process but VAVA isn't listed. Somehow it still works. Maybe I'm just lucky?Overall, I'm very pleased with this so far. I expect it to get much better when I pair it with an appropriate screen and even more when I build out the sound system. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this purchase if you have the money to spend on it.The only minor annoyance I've discovered is the image on my wall can be ever so slightly slanted or keystone just ever so slightly off. It's not hard at all to adjust. Basically just softly move the unit on the surface. But being so close it's hard to tell exactly. That's not a fault of VAVA though, but rather, I suspect, a consequence of UST projection. This is the first one I've owned but I imagine they all behave similarly and require fine adjustments to get the image perfect.I'll add to my review when I get the screen in place as I imagine that will improve the experience even more (my wall is textured and occasionally noticeable while viewing).

That decision, in tandem with the screen size you want, will dictate how you mount the screen. So, you need to put the projector where you want it, then project on the wall to the size you want. THEN MOUNT THE SCREEN ONTO THE PROJECTED IMAGE. If you mount the screen first, you may find that you cant get the image to match the screen because you don't have a projector mounting surface at the precise right height to hit the screen correctly. Start drilling more holes.Picture: Pretty good during the day in a well lit more, but honestly I wanted more. I have the best screen you can buy for a UST projector with awesome CLR design (Ceiling and Ambient Light Rejection) - it was $1500. But still the image is a bit washed out in daylight. In dim or dark rooms, the image is phenomenal as advertised. Don;t expect a TV quality bright image in daylight.Glitches: The Aptoid TV interface is WORTHLESS. In fact, it does not work for me. Just buy an Apple TV and hook it up. Don't ask questions. Don't try to make the Aptoid work. Just get the Apple TV. No matter how many times I downloaded Amazon Prime Video, the app failed to show up on the home screen. So I could ATTEMPT to access movies immediately after loading, but if I left the App, I had to re-search for it, re-download it, and start over. But worse, Amazon Prime would not play movies. Constant "a problem occurred" message upon starting playback. Has never worked. Same with Netflix. Well, at least the Netflix app actually downloaded onto the home screen. Small victory, but every time I try to play a movie, it stops after 15 seconds and says "cant connect to Netflix service" after which video playback stops and audio continues. I tried for 5 hours to screw with this. No luck. I gave up, connected an Apple TV, and no problems whatsoever. Every app works perfectlySound: I like nice sound systems, and was sure I'd find the Vava speakers underwhelming. But I have to admit that after listening to a couple movies, the sound is pretty damn good. If anything, perhaps a tad more bass would be great. But honestly you need to be really into sound to find fault with the system. Impressive.I've seen other people's 120-150" screens with overhead projectors, and this rivals the best in dim and dark rooms. For less than $4500, I got a great projector, great screen, and a very passable sound system. The movie room is great. Even with the glitches with the horrendous aptoid system, you can solve it easily with an Apple TV.I'm happy with the purchase. Let's hope it holds together.

The WOW factor of the 120”, in a big room, on a form factor which sits against the wall is totally off the chart when seen in person. There's a real cinematic feel to the home that’s not possible with a TV and it really feels like you are in a theater. My friends were impressed. My GF was impressed. Everyone who has seen it was impressed.Secondly, while the picture on the VAVA is good even with some light in the room, with the lights SLIGHTLY dimmed, the VAVA destroys the 85” setup. While no projector can ever beat a TV in terms of being flexible with all lighting conditions, the brightness and picture quality on the VAVA is good enough to make the trade off worth it for me. It’s worth noting that they do make ALR screens designed to magnify the light from UST projectors like the VAVA and reject ambient lighting which allows for a near-complete day time viewing experience which closes this gap even more.Third, the VAVA is brain dead easy to setup. It sits alongside my PS4 against the wall and I didn’t have to spend an extra penny to set it up. The ultra short throw solves the issue with the clutter and installation process that plagues regular projectors and just makes everything simple and clean. I read another customer review that called this feature game changing, and I have to agree.Fourth, the picture and sound quality are both really good. The VAVA supports 4K and the image looks awesome in person. Colors are vibrant and on a big screen, you can make out all the little wrinkles and pores on a person. I have a cheap soundbar that costs about $120 on Black Friday and the VAVA’s Harmon Kardon soundbar is both louder and sounds better.Lastly, my only issue with the VAVA (and any projector setup) is the input lag with games. You don’t notice it with single player games, but die hard gamers will get a faster input response with a TV. Input lag has been the achilles heel of projector gaming and the VAVA is no exception in this department. For me, I don’t really notice it but this is something worth mentioning if you are on the fence and plan on using it for heavy gaming.All in all, the VAVA has been well received by professional critics and there are a ton of positive reviews online already. My fears: -I had read that the color accuracy on the VAVA was terrible. Many reviews had stated that the reds were pushed too greatly, and that there was a tint over the picture. -3D was a huge must for me. Though the VAVA supports 3D, it was by mean of a firmware update, and I had read many people were underwhelmed by the 3D on this device. This was actually what gave me the most pause. -Fan Noise. I had been seeing reports that this projector gets loud. -Lack of brightness. This projector was said to not perform well in ambient lighting. After owning the projector for a couple of weeks, I am happy to report that, though these fears all have some basis, I have found workarounds to most, and the others do not bother me as much as I thought. -First off, color accuracy. The reds definitely get pushed on this projector. After getting some different settings from a few online sources, these were the settings I ended up going with: Color Mode: Custom Brightness: 48 Contrast: 45 Saturation: 37 Definition: 50 Tone: 43 Red Gain: 1012 Green Gain: 852 Blue Gain: 777 HDR: Off I tried these settings with HDR on first and the reds blew up. The picture was saturated with color, but did not looks natural. I tampered with the settings more, but found that the best thing to do was switch HDR to off. Once I switched off the HDR, everything looked great! Now one of the biggest selling point of 4K has been HDR, so was this projector actually worth it? I would say yes. Though HDR is not worth anything on this, the increase in resolution is noticeable. Switching between regular Blu-Ray and UHD Blu-ray is not as subtle as some might have you believe on a 100" screen. So even without HDR, I would say the 4K is absolutely worth it at this size. With the above settings and HDR off, I see no tint or overpowering colors, but a clean, natural, and sharp image. -Next, 3D. I have a large library of 3D blu-rays. I have actually not upgraded my TV past 1080p, because I love 3D and the new TVs do not offer it. 3D on this projector requires manual switching, which is not so bad (about three clicks on the remote). I started with Avatar in 3D. The image displayed as two images, one on the top of the screen, and one on the bottom. When I accessed the 3D menu on the VAVA, it presented me with three options: left/right, top/bottom, screen encapsulation. Since the image I saw was split horizontally, I chose top/bottom. My heart sank. The 3D image displayed gave me an absolute headache. The picture had depth, but seemed to line up imperfectly. It almost felt like I had astigmatism. On top of that, there were green bars that flickered at the top and bottom of the image. I thought this would be a deal breaker, but I decided to try something else. I tried frame encapsulation and voila! The image line up perfectly, and actually, impressively. Unlike my Panasonic plasma 3D TV, there was no ghosting at all. I had not experienced 3D this good outside of the theater. Depth was outstanding, and colors looked great. Of course, the image was darker, but I was very pleasantly surprised. -Third, fan noise. This projector can sing. I am good at tuning things out, but I can see this being an issue for someone that wants absolute quiet during the quiet scenes in a movie. It does not bother me, and to be honest, I have do not even notice it past the first two minutes or so after starting up the projector. The 5040UB definitely wins in this regard. I barely even knew that was on just by listening to it. -Fourth, brightness. This projector advertises something like 6000 lumens, but it ends up closer to 2700 lumens in most professional reviews I have seen. I use a VAVA ALR screen, and even that gets washed out a bit in direct sunlight, though I can still see the picture. If you will be watching in a high-lit environment, you may have to consider a light canon like the Epson LS500 UST projector. Final thoughts: The Epson 5040UB had a better picture, but the convenience of the VAVA won out. Though not as good of a picture per se, this projector is no slouch. I honestly do not feel like I lost out on anything by not getting a pricier projector. I have seen this projector dip a hair under $2000 a few times. At that price point, I feel no qualms about recommending it.
The quality of the picture and sound is great but all the added goodies are just meh. None of the apps work I can’t download them to my Home Screen or utilize them for that matter. I can’t even screen share from my phone to the device as advertised. So with that being said I wouldn’t recommend anyone else to waste their time buying it. I got an Apple TV for Christmas that I connected projector. Which is ridiculous to have to do when it’s supposed to be a smart projector. I contacted customer service and no one was able to help me without me being charged extra.

If you’re used to Apple level of design do not expect that.Their “smart android system” is boring, projectors not always know how to be user-friendly. Nothing in the market will be comparable to LG’s WebOS. You can check out reviews and watch YouTube videos about it, they’re the best in the industry. Okay, not everybody can afford $10,000 plus for a good home theater system, but if you’re paying almost $3,000 for a projector you already have a good TV, you’ll probably buy an ALR screen and most likely you do have money to at least have a Sonos or Bose system.Harman Kardon makes the projector heavier, louder (fans) and more expensive.Harman Kardon is just a bait to introduce VAVA in the market and help them build their brand supported by a strong name.Harman Kardon is great, but unnecessary from a customer perspective, it’s just necessary from VAVA’s perspective to drive their sales into an unknown market.PROS:Picture quality is beautiful. But we don’t know for how long it’ll last.CONCLUSION:I wouldn’t buy at this price, and I recommend you to wait until they lower their price again if you want to give it a try. If price is not what you concern about, LG HU85LA is your best choice.
