Veritas 1/2" Narrow PM-V11 Bench Chisel

$188.00

(33 reviews)

This chisel is milled from PM-V11 steel (Rc61-63), an innovative proprietary alloy. This metalrsquo;s micro-structure makes it extremely durable, so it can withstand the impact of heavy chopping cuts without chipping or deforming as readily as other tool steels, even at bevel angles as low as 20deg;. Highly wear resistant, the edge typically lasts at least twice as long in use as an A2 blade before it needs sharpening, yet it's as easy to sharpen as A2 steel using common abrasive media such as water stones. The chisel blades taper from shoulder to tip for strength and rigidity, and have parallel sides and true bevel edges for clearance and minimal friction when working into an angled corner or a tight recess. To ensure that the face of each blade is both smooth and true, the chisels are lapped flat. The blade and handle are connected with a tang and a socket-like stainless-steel ferrule that seats directly onto the shoulder of the blade. Flats on the tang prevent the handle from rolling. Each chisel is superbly balanced, with the center of gravity close to the tang/socket connection. The hard maple handle has been torrefied, a heating process that changes the structure of the wood at the cellular level, stabilizing it against swelling and shrinkage caused by humidity changes. Contoured to fit the hand nicely, the handle has a domed end that resists chipping from glancing mallet blows. Made in Canada.

I decided on getting a set of these for my 60 birthday. I could only get 6 of them as the other two were out of stock. I have added the 1 inch and only have the 19mm to get. The feel and quality of these tools just oozes out. They are worth spoiling your self for. Warning the edges other than the cutting part are very sharp. Follow the instruction on the accompanying information sheet.

I bought one of these chisels and a Lie Nielsen for comparison ahead of getting a set. The LN was great but the Veritas was better for me. I preferred the weight of the Veritas - they are very light - not as classically balanced as the LN but somehow they just feel right and very fine for detail work. However I could imagine some people would prefer the weight and feel of the LN - it is a matter of taste. However the steel on these chisels is exceptional - the edge is amazing and it feels both soft and hard at the same time when chopping - hard to explain - but the A2 steel in the LN lacks the same level of feedback for want of a better word. Anyway I have since bought a set of the PM-V11 Veritas chisels and could not recommend them highly enough - only issue is ... MoreI bought one of these chisels and a Lie Nielsen for comparison ahead of getting a set. Brilliant Chisel

I bought just one to see if the claims are true. On arrival the flatness and accuracy of the grinding is just excellent. It took a minute to get a razor edge. They are not sharper than any other chisel when freshly sharpened but after a few hours the difference really shows. I used a mix of chisels to cut out some recesses for handles in oak doors and my other (good) chisels dulled quickly. In the end I did the whole job with the Veritas chisel and at the end it was only just beginning to dull. A few strokes on a stone and it was back to a razor. I can see myself buying many PM V11 products.

Great Plane blade
3 November 2023

I have been very impressed with the quality of this plane blade. I had recently inherited my grandad’s plane and when I went to sharpen it I found that there was hardly any blade left! This has been a good replacement.

Probably worth more than the 3 stars given
4 October 2023

I bought this item for my, Stanley Bailey No. 4 hand plane. But it didn't fit. First I noticed that the latteral opening wasn't wide enough for my plane, no big deal, I can easily make it fit. But, no matter how much I moved the frog, this blade is just to thick for my plane. So I'm stuck with it, can't return it because of the slight grinding in the central slot, hence poor rating for performance and value.I just wish Axminster would specifically note which planes these blades are able to fit.

The best chisels I have.
14 November 2019

Probably one of the best chisels I have. But I work with it without a mallet, only with my hands. Sharpening angle is 30 degrees. On 25 degrees not sharpened. The edge holds well on any species of wood. Compared this chisel with the Japanese Hattori (HRC 68), the edge holds better than the Japanese. Sharpening on the diamond.I can recommend this chisel.

The claims are true
9 September 2013

I bought one of these chisels on the back of the claims made about PM-V11. I already own a full set of a good brand. The chisel was dead flat and perfectly ground. It took just a few minutes to polish and hone. Absolute sharpness was good, but not noticeably better than my other chisels. However, in use the difference quickly becomes apparent. The Veritas chisels are incredibly tough. Cutting dovetails in ash, they held their edges many times longer than my other chisels, particularly when used for chopping. Not once did I detect a chip in the edge, just a gradually dulling after substantial use. Re-honing is easier than with my other chisels, requiring just a few strokes on my waterstone. These chisels are worth every penny, and more.

Veritas Bench Chisel - 25.4mm

Absolutely stunning piece of kit, light weight but evenly balanced. Wonderful manufacturing quality and has been stored with silica gel packet, no signs of corrosion after 12months and sharp as can be out of the packet. Light hone and off you go.

Superb chisel. Came razor sharp out the box and was put to work immediately. One of the finest chisels I have ever used and more shall be purchased.
