The Orion-Tr Smart charger can be used in 12V or 24V systems and is suitable for both lead acid and lithium batteries. As with other Victron products, such as their Blue Smart Charger, this Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-18 is made with seemingly good hardware, BUT the app is buggy. And the terms used for settings in the app do not match the user manual. I could delve into the details but man o man, they could put more effort into those. It is a good idea to bench test the products to fully understand behavior prior to installation. You'll be glad you did.

Purchasing was simple and shipping was fast.My boat’s thrusters are 24 volt. As a result I have to be tied to shore power to charge the thrusters.Adding the Smart 12/24 allows me to charge while underway.Easy install and works great.
Easy instal. 4 mount bolts and 3 wires. I did elect to install a relay to the “wire bridge” but it’s not required. The app is full featured & very professional. The manual can be confusing, but I’ll clear that up quite simply - here goes: “Ignore section 4.5!” On first (and second and 3rd) read, it seems like this is a required step but it’s completely optional. If you’re not a pro installer, you probably don’t want to override this safety feature anyway. If you’re installing in a camper you probably have plenty of room. My install was under the hood of a Silverado and the only space it fits was in the flowmaster cold air intake housing. Paired with a Victron battery on the spare battery tray.

Only after I had the installation completed. I find these units lack some basic functionality. No ability to adjust the output current! The unit when turned on will always go to max rated current if the load demands it. This then puts a massive load on the source, at times more than the source can handle. Other vendors have the ability to 1/2 load current. I had expected from these guys a complete fully functional device.

Upgraded to lithium in my RV. Bought this to avoid changing the alternator or burning it up. The idea is to limit the alternator draw to 30A while filling a 550Ah pack. It plays well with my BMS. It runs hot. Not just a little, but HOT HOT. Reading the Victron sites, everyone is complaining about how hot it runs. Only feedback from the manufacturer is that it needs to be installed properly. OK... clear 10cm above and below? Good luck finding that extra space in an RV. Thanks Victron, looks like you misestimated the airflow requirements, especially in the desert. (And it's only spring!) I designed an air distribution manifold and printed on my 3D printer. Black on black in the picture, so a bit hard to see, but look under the unit. Fitted a little 2" fan pushing 6CFM through the fins. Only pulls 0.14A and the unit no longer gets hot. It doesn't seem to need that much airflow, but convective air currents don't seem to be enough from both my and other's experiences. The heat sink is big, they tried to size it to handle the thermal load, but without airflow it's useless. Glad they made the investment, as the small fan really works well with the large heat sink. The bluetooth link is nice, but the app needs more features. It tells you charging state, voltages and current; Should also report temperature. Programming through the link is useful and well laid out. I can see where people without smart phones/desire to use technology will find this frustrating. I just wish there was more information. Would be nice if Victron had an output to drive a relay that was either temperature or output current based.
Works great. App is pretty handy too. Auto sensing voltage change to turn on and off is BALLER.
