This View Master Virtual Reality is really neat! I wish this was around years ago, when I was a kid. This View Master is a lot of fun, both for kids and adults.This View Master Virtual Reality Starter Pack comes with an adapter piece if you have a smaller phone, a demo reel, and instructions. The demo reel basically gives you a sneak peek of the experience pack reels. This may not be a big deal for some, but I really don't like that my child has to use my phone everytime he or she wants to use the view master.Also, sometimes you can get a little dizzy. This is usually either due to the phone/the app, or if you move around a little too fast while viewing the reels.Another con is that with the experience packs, you have to use the pass card that comes with them in order to view the three reels that are included in each experience pack. We have had a hard time trying to get the pass cards to scan on the phone. There is a lever on the side, that you press down to make your menu choices. You look into the viewer, look around, and find the icon you want, then pull down the lever. If you are in a scene with an open area, to get to a menu, you just can aim anywhere and pull the lever and the menu will pop up.The latch that holds the viewer closed, did not always latch securely, so I used a finger on each side to hold it closed, just to be safe, but it was more comfortable to hold it that way. The viewer also works with google cardboard apps.I think this is a very fun, and educational item for anyone in any age group.

This would be a fun gadget if you can figure out how to get it work. After a lot of bumps and with help from my adult son, was pretty nice using the wildlife experience pack for what it does. I remember the old one and remember that being fun but this has alot more interaction where I can see it is more fun to operate. There were no directions explaining why the need to have both the red wheel and the wheels that are provided in other packs in order to get the app to work. It did say that one better not lose the red wheel or you won't be able to operate it. Also if you purchase the packs to use with the View Master, don't lose the paper scan card either. We had pluses and minuses but all agreed they liked the new experience of the View Master Viewer but alot of cons as well. Used the Destinations experience pack and that one wasn't as great. It was a 360 degree experience but it only let me look at one thing. No fun videos or mini games. I clicked on the main menu option and it went black and told me to remove device from the view finder. Never could get it work after that. The Space Expereience Pack, I was excited to use but it never would recognize the reels. I just gave up as after so many tries, figured either it was an operator error or the reels didn't work for some reason. I would have really loved it, if it wasn't so difficult to use. I don't see a kid being able to operate by themselves without some problems. I got bored with all the difficulty I was having so would not recommend the view master until they fix the quirks.The Pros: Did fit my HTC One phone. Was easy to download the apps which are free from the Google Play Store. Was able to get the apps to interact with the reels from the different packs I had. Really enjoyed the video feature as well as the 3D and the movement in the Wildlife disks. Made it a really unique experience. It is very easy to insert the phone and it doesn't slip around once its in. The glasses are comfortable with the soft rubber next to your face. The lever is easy to find and click when needed. I do need to comment that I went online to see what other people had to say and there were some people who didn't have as difficult of a time as I did. So if you want to give it a try yourself, I would kind of recommend it as I said would have been great if everything worked easily.Cons: I don't like having to keep my cell phone in the viewer while using it as I can't use the phone for other things. Especially if a kid or someone is using and no other cell phone available. Also it made my cell phone extremely hot. I wouldn't want to use it too often as I don't want to ruin the phone. There is no opening to insert a USB plug to charge the phone while in use. If you do have to gain access to your phone, the latch is easy to open, but after using repeated it was getting stuck and I don't trust it not to get stuck so I would have to break the latch to open it. t is plastic which seems sturdy enough for a lot of usage but the latch gets stuck. Using the scan card that is provided with each pack was very difficult trying to get the phone's app to recognize it. When using the viewer because it is so close to your eyes, we did find ourselves becoming dizzy. You do have to get pretty close to the reels to trigger them to work. The reels are really difficult to get out of their plastic holders.

That then opens up content in the app that allows you to experience different games, scenes and educational information. It appears there are only 3 disk sets at this time, a Space theme, a Wild Animal theme, and a travel sites theme. Each set comes with 3 disks with different subsets of the program on each. We played around with each set. You have to move you head around and walk around a little to use this. You can see these things on TV, but not this close, and not in 3D, it’s really a neat experience for the younger children.The whole family (18 of us) got together for Thanksgiving, and most of us enjoyed the View Master virtual reality viewer. The kids really enjoyed it, but wasn’t too stable standing still so we got an office chair and sit the little ones in it and slowly turned them, they were able to experience the 3D effect without bumping into anything while trying to stand and turn at the same time, the adults liked it better this way also. The 3-D affect makes you feel like you can reach out and touch the object you’re looking at, the statue of liberty is amazing! This is a great way for schoolchildren to see the solar system, or the young scientist to see rockets in space. The view master virtual reality viewer is fun for all ages, and will keep young curious minds occupied for hours, (or as long as the phone battery holds out). One draw back is, you cannot charge phone while it is in the View Master, so you need to make sure it has full charge to fully enjoy the contents of the disk.

You can be transported to New York, London, and even see Mayan ruins, or you can check out wild animals in the Outback, the Amazon, and even see the Savanna. The whole experience is in a 360 degree view. Warning, don't walk around and try to get closer to things while viewing or you'll end up running into things.The new View Master knocked it out of the park with this new design. Even as an adult, I enjoyed it as much as the kids. A word of advice though, if you have multiple children I suggest you purchase more than one because they will be fighting over it.
This is a really hard review to do because I wanted so much to like it. It was just too difficult to set up. It is a great concept but falls short on so many levels. First, it is only useable on a smartphone device. You must insert your smartphone into the Viewmaster but only after downloading the app on your smartphone from the App Store or google play. This took at least 30 minutes to download. It takes huge amounts of memory. I have a Samsung Galaxy but the starter pack does come with an adapter for the iPhone 5s, 5c, and 5. Not sure if it would work with the iPhone 6. I thought this would make a great gift for my 7 and 8 year old grandsons but not so much, now that I know what a pain it is just to set it up. There are three "experience packs" that can be purchased separately, Space, Destinations, and Wildlife. The starter pack comes with a reel that is a sample of each of the Experience Packs. Unless your child has their own smartphone, I don't think you want to give up your phone every time they want to play with the Viewmaster. I do not recommend this product, sorry.

Getting the phone in and out of the device is challenging, again this may have been due to the fact that I was worried I could scratch my phone. Once everything is set up, you have to download the app with each reel. The apps are fairly large (35mb+). The apps require you to activate them with a passport. The passports are a nice touch because it makes you feel like you’re traveling somewhere, but they are insanely difficult to use. It is a good thing you only need to activate once, because everytime I had to activate it took 5 minutes.
