Better than the one from the 70s, with minor flaws

Everything we've blended in in (hummus, smoothies, a date based batter for mixing into muffins) has come out completely smooth once we figured out how to make sure all the ingredients could get to the bland (sometimes a thicker food would get stuck under the blade and inhibit proper flow, causing the blade to just spin ... MoreWe upgraded from a 3600 model (the classic blender from the 70s), that just wasn't doing the job making our smoothies completely smooth (always left a few frozen banana chunks for a lucky member of the family to chew on :D ) It also was showing it's age with some of the seals leaking and it was time to replace it since repair parts for those things are scarce. From a performance perspective, this blender is WAY better than the old model we had. On the first day, when I went to set it on the counter, I was placing the plastic stopper in the lid and it slipped out of my hand, fell to the floor and broke one of the two plastic prongs that help hold it to the silicon lid. Now, I'm not someone with dexterity problems and found this display of physics rather interesting. I noticed that the plastic stopper has a couple of design flaws that I think could be improved, mainly that the lid is a "frosted" plastic style, which actually reduced grip. Along with that the edges of the stopper are rounded which further decreases ability to grip.2.) The motor has a slight smell when running. Maybe this is just residual oil burn off smell from factory, but if it keeps up, I'm guessing the blender will give up the ghost and need replacing as it doesn't seem normal. We are following all instructions to the 'T' as far as what we add when, and how to ramp it up to full speed.3.) Including the tamper with the blender without a proper holder makes for a storage problem. I like to keep my tools all in one place, and storing the tamper away from the blender just doesn't make sense. I understand that there is a tamper holder add on you can buy, but it just doesn't make sense not to include that as part of the base blender assembly.

This Vitamix serves as a replacement for another Vitamix blender, which was very similar and was purchased a decade ago. While that blender still operates, upon starting the motor (at low speed), the motor "jumps" to a high speed for a brief second before engaging at a low speed. This doesn't render the blender unusable, but especially in certain circumstances, the resistance of the contents is too great for the motor to jump to such a high speed and the circuit breaker trips. Although I cannot remember exactly when this behavior started, I have speculated that I may have done something to marginally overload the motor at some point. With the new blender, I am trying to be more conscious to follow recommendations regarding what order to add the types of contents and other practices as recommended in the user manual. The need to be cautious about these things is why I currently rate this as a 4 star product. If after a couple of years, the blender is running like new and demonstrates that it does not need to be handled with "baby gloves", then I expect I would consider it a 5 star product.

We took on our cabin vacations to make smoothies, ice cream, etc. For Mother’s Day 8+ years ago, he ‘helped’ our teenage son buy the 5200 for me at my house. It was a great way for us to make more smoothies and be healthy. I use mine daily. His is still working strong. This week, we bought the newest digital entire pack with the separate disc container and individual containers at a Costco road show for our son and his bride as a wedding gift. They are both thrilled. The app allows recipe ingredients to be added to the grocery list and instantly programs for required time. It is a great gift with a lifetime of use!

Great so far, but technique matters!

So far, I have made peanut butter, salsa, margaritas, smoothies, and crushed ice. It's extremely powerful and hasn't struggled in the slightest to grind down anything, however, it's important to note how big of a deal technique is. I struggled with my first smoothie because my apple slices were too large and got stuck, preventing things from being ground down. You need to ensure you have your tamper ready or cut the pieces to an appropriate size for it to free blend. Finally, there definitely is an art to what speed you use for different goals and recipes. It's also a lot quieter than I expected (though noisy ingredients like ice always cause extra noise, the motor/blender noise is fairly small compared to the Ninja blender we had before).

Having seen one of these used on YouTube by a regular human, I know at least one single machine works. Mine does not. I can write off all the others I've seen online as fake outs at this point. All contacts to CS or checking sites for ways to fix the issues over the years have been a bust.Basically it just doesn't blend. Not even as good as a cheap blender. Binds up on anything, or tries to throw any solid into the lid. Nothing circulates without a tamper, and using the tamper creates the previous two issues. The only thing to date it ever successfully made was whipped cream. After running it for about two minutes on high. My husband wasn't watching, so it may have suddenly been able to create a vortex and that's why it works. We don't know.) So, realistically the machine is pretty useless. If we didn't live so far out, and I wasn't so sick this thing would have been returned that first year, long ago. I can't recommend this brand at all. Not sure any others work as advertised, to make smoothies or blend veggies, but I know cheap blenders can at least blend basic simple soft stuff. Mine can not.

One thing annoys me
10 May 2023

The only thing that really annoys me! Why have we not bought this blender much earlier!!! My son's braces forced us to buy a blender. He himself claims that it is only an excuse to invest the not a little money for a blender after all. We love analog, because hopefully still robust and not much can break. The telephone consultation at GrueneSmoothies was very friendly and competent. Well packaged, the good piece arrived at our house and we have not regretted the purchase in any way. Delicious Nice Creams and Smoothies, the blender is fun and the food tastes good. If he now provides us with many years of good service, then we have done everything right. But 7 years warranty is a word and convinced us. THANK YOU! GS Team.

Super Easy!
13 December 2022

I finally upgraded from my old Magic Bullet and I'm so glad I did. The 5200 is super easy to use, no frills or confusing complicated attachments. I could immediately start using the blender to make smoothies, ice-cream, pina coladas and shakes. Even the clean up is simple because it self cleans with a small squirt of Dawn dish soap. I like my smoothies thick and creamy but my nephew likes his smoothies with a thinner consistency like juice. It's such a piece of cake to customize because of the powerful ability of the motor to blend finely the toughest ingredients. I can't wait to try more recipes.

I wish I could do 4.5 stars, but 4 seems unfair with how much I love this thing. I will have to buy a really small silicone spatula and see if that helps. So far I've used this to make smoothies daily (with frozen fruit), many frozen alcoholic drinks (with lots of ice), powdered sugar from granulated sugar (it worked great!), and a few batches of hot soup (not cooking in the blender, just blending after cooking on the stove). Following the recommended layering order of materials is essential! I put kale in a smoothie first instead of yogurt/juice as I usually do, and it got wrapped up in the blades and was difficult to extract, but that was my error. I don't love how often pouring from the pitcher becomes messy; if I am pouring something either into multiple containers or in multiple batches (ie, not all at once), the contents inevitably slosh down the side from the spout instead of back into the pitcher, I guess because the spout isn't angled. So far I haven't encountered a difficult blending job that the tamper and/or a little extra liquid hasn't been able to fix, almost effortlessly, which is a huge step above my previous blenders.I would buy this again in a heartbeat and wish I had gotten one years ago! I use this daily and am extremely satisfied. It is fairly large, but I keep it on my counter because I use it all the time, and I don't have other appliances on my counter that some do (stand mixer, toaster, etc). The pitcher is extremely large, but I make green smoothies daily and can finally blend all at one time, instead of in batches like I used to. I might consider an additional, smaller pitcher to make things like pesto, hummus, etc. I haven't tried much from the recipe book, but adding whole citrus to blended margaritas was new to me, and I'll never look back.Pros: Very easy to use, feels like it will last forever, high-quality materials, results in beautifully blended textures for cold, frozen, and hot foods, cleans easily, so far no perceptible odor retention (have used for green smoothies, hot soup, and frozen drinks all in one day), blends quickly.Cons: Pitcher that comes with it may be too large for some projects, pour spout can get messy, may blend more quickly than expected if you're used to less-powerful blenders (so you should be careful not to overblend). The cons for me are barely anything at all. Again, I wish I had purchased this years ago.

There's no evident difference between Reconditioned and New, by the way--spotless unused carafe, tamper, everything else. This blender is incredible. It can chop tomatoes. It can shred (cooked) chicken. It makes nut milk and tahini. It makes kale smoothies and v8 juice and sorbet and mixed drinks. The only even slightly frustrating experience I've had was trying to make mayonnaise, and I'm sure that was my fault, since my partner can get it to work just fine.If you're on the fence, save up and get ... MoreI've had my Reconditioned Standard Vitamix since around 2015, and there's just no other word for it than 'game changer'. There is no question that the 5200 is a powerful blender. It's definitely a step up for our smoothies; it pulverizes anything, even seeds, and produces a smooth texture that is a pleasure to drink. What we wonder about is the tamper, and the need for it. Maybe it's a carafe design thing? Our previous blender (mid-level Breville star performer) had an ingenious bowl-shaped carafe. This kept air pockets from forming. We've varied the way we increase the blending speed, quickly or slowly, and still: the air pocket forms around the blades and only the bottom part of the smoothie gets blended until we jam away at it with the tamper.(Plus, the unit should come with a Tamper Holder, so the tamper is not just laying on the counter when not in use. Why not?)So, we fight the air pocket every time (why?), and we struggle to find a place to store the tamper, but other than that we're making some excellent smoothies, and the 5200 is a powerful and capable blender!
