This starter set is perfect. In comparison to the Dungeons and Dragons starter, this one is superior and far more immersive. Not to mention, the campaign is perfect because it lets the GM seamlessly transition into any other Warhammer Source book (which is perfect for new GM’s). The premade characters are perfect for new RPG players to make strong character decisions and be pretty dang incredible. Who doesn’t want to slice and dice better than Gotrek Gurnisson?

I own almost all of the 2nd edition but it is a bit outdated and many of my friends were a bit reluctant to play it. But with the 4th edition starter set, I am a lot more confident that they will be willing to give it a shot.

Positives: The booklet that comes with this GM's screen is packed with useful hints and tips about running a WHFRP game. It explains the "feel" of the Warhammer world and will be very useful in bringing it to life for the players. The screen itself is sturdy and has some cracking artwork on the player facing side. Most of the go-to references are on there. Negative: Some of the space on the GM's side of the screen is taken up with things that probably don't need to be there: suggested names tables for PCs for instance. Kind of useful but not the thing a GM needs at the drop of a hat.
First off, I love the trifold character sheets the pre-made characters come on, excellent. Box is standard, the books are standard quality, the dice are kinda low quality, but we all have a shitzillion dice anyway. The stars of this set are the fairly clear, easy to read, cardstock reference cards and handouts. They give you the basics of the game, mostly understandable, in 3 or 4 double sided card pages. These are amazing resources for new players. The adventure is a decent introduction and it's easy to branch into other adventures in ubersreik, or the enemy within campaign. Excellent starter set despite the cheesy, low count, cheap dice.
Great value starter set for new WFRPG players. There is enough background material to make it a worthwhile purchase even for those who have the core rulebook.
In terms of value for money the WFRP 4e Starter Set is fine. The production quality is very high, no flimsy paper handouts etc, it all sets a good impression. A Guide To Ubersreik gives GMs and Players a ready-built starting hub for adventures, whether they be primarily urban or more rural; there's enough Adventure Hooks here to keep most gaming groups going for a long, long time. If the whole Starter Set were of this quality, and utility I would have no hesitation giving the product a 5 Star rating. So why only 3 Stars? The Introductory Adventure. It is, in my view, a stellar example of how not to write a starting adventure. In many ways it much worse than the often derided Oldenhaller Contract from the much loved 1st Edition way back in 1996. There are two major problems with it. Firstly, it is very rail-roady, removing player agency, etc for no real pay-off other than the give the writer an easy "start point". I have been GMing since 1988, if I can't come up with a better start point than that for an adventure it goes in the bin. Removing player agency should be handled with care, there are valid reasons to do it - very, very occasionally - but there must always be both a reason and a pay-off for doing so; and the reason should be internally consistent to both the story and the game system. In this case it is neither - it is nothing more than a cheap and lazy mechanism to give the author an "easy way in". Truly shocking from a supposedly leading RPG studio. Secondly, it undermines one of the core. and one of the most loved and enduring, mechanisms of the WFRP game. Careers. Character creation (normal character creation) is a trade off between choice and random rolling. I've always preferred the random rolling for WFRP and have had many truly memorable characters come out of the process. But whichever method you prefer one of the core elements to WFRP is that each Career has a corresponding set of Skills and Talents, and a certain combination of advances must be bought to progress from that Career to another. There are enough Career options to, with a little imagination, be able to cover just about any starting character concept. However, the starting Adventure railroads the Characters into joining the City Watch (Career: Watch Recruit) but does not require them to actually take that Career. Thus undermining, both at the in-game and meta level, a core feature of the game and indeed the mechanism that in WFRP replaces "levels" in most TTRPGs. Why allow players to choose their career, or roll for it randomly, if they HAVE to be Watch Recruits? But more fundamentally, why have a Career progression system at all if the Introductory Adventure throws it straight down the drain for nothing more than expediency to cover for lazy and unimaginative adventure writing? Sure, the Oldenhaller Contract from 1st to 3rd Editions was nothing spectacular, but it didn't possess even half as much rail-roading as the new one does; and it certainly did not undermine any of the core mechanics / systems of the rules set in the way the new one does. If you took out the Starting Characters (whose only real purpose is appear in the Starting Adventure) and the Starting Adventure and called the product The Ubersreik Adventure Pack it would still be worth the money and would likely get a 5 Star rating. With them in the box it is only worth a 3 Star rating.
This is a super fun module that introduces you to warhammer fantasy tabletop with a bunch of pre-made characters and giving you the basic rules. I had to take a star off as although it has the basic rules, it doesn't come included with the core rule book for warhammer fantasy, so it was hard to understand how the magic system works as that was not covered in the rules that are given and doesn't allow for creative freedom for our own character creation with what is given, that too is also covered in the core rulebook
Harks back to the magical first edition. A great game. Has everything you need to get going

I would whole heartedly recommend it to players both old and new!
