However, the adaptor that came with this one is cheap made in China garbage, comes with a slip-on adaptor that goes over the 2 prongs so it'll fit Australian plugs. It will not stay in the power outlet plug when the outlet is vertical mounted, like on a wall or vertical mounted powerboard. Probably a cost cutting excercise by WD I guess, as a lot of these companies seem to do, but all they've done is made the total product worse for consumers by swapping to this cheap power adaptor. Would I purchase again? No, not if it comes with the same adaptor I received with this one.

Unfortunately, I started having issues with it a month ago so I contacted WD. Customer service was prompt and attentive. A tech called ME and walked me through some diagnostics ( most of which I had already done ) and it was determined that I should receive a replacement. The turn around time was 10 days which was a bit of a pain since my other back-up drives were full because of all of those files transferred from the Elements drive before I returned it, but I understand why that can't ship the replacement before inspecting the return first. In any case, the new drive is working well so far, and I by comparison, I can definitely tell there was a problem with the first one from the beginning. It HAPPENS SOMETIMES! And based on my experience with my other WD drives which not only include those already mentioned, but 2 Black internal drives ( 2TB and 8TB ) as well as an Ultrastar 10TB, I must say that I'm extremely happy my products overall, and my only experience with the return process was a positive one.

The drive is nice for the price and meets my needs but transfer speeds are slow. Info states that using usb 3.0 transfer speeds up to 5GB/s are possible. I am not getting anywhere near those speeds. I have a Dell XPS 15 9500 with 32GB of RAM and two SSDs with a total of 3TB of memory. My 1TB ssd is dedicated to the operating system and the 2TB ssd is for everything else. My thunderport USB-C ports are supposed to be capable of up to 10 GB/s transfer. Since the element didn't come with a usb-c cable I had to buy one. Pros: Western Digital produce by far the most reliable hard drives I've ever purchased. Not that I'd want to tempt fate talking about reliability but I still have their hard drives from ten years ago. I purchased this one to support the memory of my PS4. Once unboxed and connect to my PS4 it took moments to format and began transfering all my game data to the WD 8tb drive. Over a course of a week thanks to its size I was able to install over 40 titles without making a dent in its capacity. A WD 8tb hard drive is an excellent investment. In a world where prices keeping going up for less goods than you needed , it's great to see a WD hard drive of this size and quality for the price of a significantly smaller and lesser quality one. Worth the investment.Cons: No ... MorePros: Western Digital produce by far the most reliable hard drives I've ever purchased. Trevor's review of WD Elements External Hard Drive - 10 TB, Black
20 February 2023

Cons: I bought this 10Tb WD Elements Drive as a desktop storage attached directly to my Windows 11 PC. While I can see the disk in File Explorer and can move/copy files to it using File Explorer the WD Discovery Backup/restore software is useless. It cannot find the drive so you can't use the drive as a backup/restore resource. WD also provide Acronis backup software which I downloaded, updated and ran. This told me that there were Disk errors and to run ChkDsk which I did and needless to say there are no disc errors with the brand new drive. I have tried again but I am unable to use the Acronis software to backup either. So all I can use the disc for is manually copying files across or use the Win 11 Backup which is pretty dreadful too.

WD Elements 8TB USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hard Drive Review
22 March 2023

This is my Ka-billion WD external hard drive primarily used for C: drive image backups. This is the largest I'm ever purchased. I'm needing to back up a lot of video files with video editing greatly increasing the size of the files. The 8TB is needed when backing up of large files and C: images is needed. The drive seems pretty fast in the data transferring. My images are around 75 GB at the moment (with a new PC that is my new video editing platform) and will be expanding past 1 TB soon enough. This drive was on sale and is an economical choice.

Works great (see details below), but only a 1 year warranty

The crappy warranty is why I gave this drive 4 stars and not 5 stars. The drive is fast, for both sequential reads and writes of large files (which is how I am using the drive). It will exceed 250 MB/s, if your USB port supports that speed, and if you are feeding it from a storage devices that can send/receive at that speed.I have not tested it for reading and/or writing countless small files. I doubt that it would come close to the speeds noted above. Also, the speeds that I noted above were based on the drive not being asked to do anything else.If you have more than one write or one read operation being asked of the drive, it will not multitask at the speed of an SSD. This drive will probably slow down to a of its speed, if asked to write two large files, simultaneously. So for doing backups, and simply saving important data, for simple data storage purposes, this drive is great. For all-around performance, look elsewhere. With a 1-year warranty, Western Digital does not have much faith in their drive holding up under the long haul.Lastly, this drive has an activity light on the front, near the bottom. When it is steadily lit, it has both a data and power connection. When it is blinking, then the drive is busy (reading or writing data). The light is easy to see, but it is not bright.Cheers!
