Another great WD portable

I have never had a single WD portable drive fail on me, ever. That 60GB portable lasted over a decade before I replaced it with a 128GB model. When I got my first Ultra, since I wanted the faster USB3 transfers I gave away four old USB2 portables I bought around 2010 and all were working fine. I give WD the highest marks for reliability. I also appreciate that WD has a recycling program where they will take your old drives (any brand) for free and give you a discount coupon you can use for future WD purchases. All in all, I highly recommend this drive for anyone who doesn't need SSD speeds.

Don't buy WD My Passport Ultra 4TB Blue

The WD My Passport Ultra 4TB Blue arrived and I started to format the device as it was set up for windows, and I have a mac. I had to try to format the device about 5 x before it finally worked. I started the time machine backup and it stopped about 6x. The slightest move of the cable, laptop or hard disk created a disconnect and I had to start all over. After many restarts, I couldn't get it to load. Then I tried reformatting, which failed multiple times. It was then I decided that the WD My Passport Ultra 4TB Blue was not a reliable device and brought it back to Coolblue. There I was told that many had problems with this device. Some were fine and some were not. I got the one that was not fine.

Nine months later this one has failed. I talked with WD directly who is willing to replace it with a refurbished one and - are you ready - they want the old disk back first. Yes, with all my private info intact and the "promise" to erase the disk and keep my data safe! YIKES. DO NOT BUY WD PRODUCTS IF YOU WANT SAFETY AND SECURITY. Two failures in less than one year and a terrible warranty policy. I'll be buying a different brand going forward.

If you look at the drive, the indicator light will not be on, but you can feel the platter spinning. If you wiggle the USB-C cable then it will most of the time pick it up and it will start working. This is seriously concerning in itself. Not as good as expected
14 November 2022

Had a harrowing experience while using the WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD. First, there's a WD Discovery app which I installed thinking it's going to help. To anyone who is buying this, please don't install this app. It asks to share app data which if we deny, doesn't install the app. You may check this in related posts in other subreddits. Such a scam. It only installs if you grant permission to share app data and crash info.Second, even after installing, or so I thought, it made my taskbar disappear (going full black). Waited a while and restarted my system.Third, proceeded to uninstall the program. Again at the end, just made my screen go majorly black and unresponsive. Had to restart my system again.

This wonderful Hard Drive has been my companion for the past few months. It's just a bit wider and shorter than our friendly iPhone 14 Pro, and it's a real treasure in the world of computing accessories. You see, this little hard drive might not be the fastest one on the block, but it's like a patient friend who takes its time to help you with your tasks. Transferring files is not like a rollercoaster ride, but it's more like a leisurely, yet brisk walk in the park. I've mainly used it to back up dash cam footage from my card and moved a few files from my laptop.Imagine this hard drive as a quiet hero, much like the kind people you meet every day. Sorry I Made This Purchase

This purchase was a big mistake by me. WD used to provide great hardware and software to help individuals safely and securely back up their home systems. No more. While the hardware may be fine, the Acronis software and installation was a nightmare on my new Windows 11 Dell computer. The software installation failed several times with Windows 11error messages about file security, etc. It was only on my 3rd attempt that the software installed even still with the OS error messages. The Acronis backup setup was VERY confusing and not user friendly at all. After some period of time I was able to actually see and understand what dir. and files were being backed up. But then while testing to make sure changed files were backed up, I found you could not even see the backup files on the drive w/o going thru some technical hoops to be able to read the data. I was so disappointed in WD as I had previously used their drives and backup software with great success. Finally, I was so frustrated with this Acronis software and lack of user friendliness, that I chucked the whole drive in the trash and went out and purchased a Seagate 2tb drive and software that works perfectly and is very user friendly. This experience was a total waste of time and money for me.

Started building systems in the mid 1980s, using CP/M. Then IBM OEM partner, and so on. Ever since WD started manufacturing HDD they were my HDD of choice with better reliability. Regretfully I can no longer recommend WD as the product quality is diminished, and they certainly aren't reliable. I own a number of these My Passport Ultra portable drives, from 1 TB to 5 TB, and I've experienced ~ 30% early failure rates in these. Product quality dropped when the drive specifications changed from 3600 RPM and 2 ms track-to-track latency to pretty blue anodized aluminum case, innovative style. Up to 5 Gb/s? Never seen it happen, on my USB 3.2 I've never seen it get above ~ 180 Mb/s. I think the platter must be a stone disc with a miniature chisel writing the information. ... MoreStarted building systems in the mid 1980s, using CP/M. Then IBM OEM partner, and so on. Western digital is churning out garbage

Four drives. All WD. All dead within 2 years. If you have important data - don't trust WD with it. If that's not bad enough when the drives DO fail, the replacement process is horrendous. You have to mail them the drive. Any sort of data recovery efforts and cost are on you prior to that. There's fees. And they take forever to process replacements. This is why companies should not be allowed to buy up all their competitors and then monopolize what's available in store. Pretty much most of the hard drive aisle (non-SSD) at the Best Buy stores are a subsidiary of Western Digital.
