Although the description explicitly says that these are the older NAS Ware 2.0 drives, they are actually the newer NAS Ware 3.0 versions. I wish WD would change the part number for a change like this. Would make it much easier to work out which supplier has newer stock.Unfortunately, one out of the six drives I ordered was DOA (wouldn't start up with head unlocking clicking noise). That seems fairly common so not sure about the reliability or quality of these drives - we will see. At least they have a 3 year warranty and I've returned several drives to WD over the years, having about 30 running here 24/7. return process has always been good.Plan on running 6 of these in a Synology 8 bay DS1815+ with the NASWare 3.0 firmware, 8 drives are now supported rather ... MoreAlthough the description explicitly says that these are the older NAS Ware 2.0 drives, they are actually the newer NAS Ware 3.0 versions. 3TB Red WD30EFRX HHD - Best available NAS focused hard drives

After a second hard drive failure in my Synology NAS, I elected to upgrade to larger capacity drives and at the same time fit units specifically designed for use in NAS boxes.Having checked the performance of a number of available NAS specific drives I chose two 3TB WD30EFRX drives. These tripled my NAS capacity and at the same time reduced my NAS boxes internal temperature and also the noise level. To soon to comment on reliability, but I have high hopes this will match the drive's other features.

Bought two of these to go into a brand spanking new Synology DS214. They are on the approved list from Synology, but 1 of them failed as soon as it went in the NAS.Shocking to say the least. Bought two other 2Tb Red drives as well to go in a workstation and guess what, one of these failed within days of installing it.I don't know what WD are up to with these drives or what lorry they got them off the back of. But even their desktop drives (been running some of those in computers and Nas's) are more reliable than these ( as in non of them have failed yet). The replacement drive is running ok and there has been a lot of traffic on the NAS so seems to be ok. But if the drives are so hit and miss to start with can't recommend them.

Bought 7 and had 3 fail within hours
26 June 2014

I initially bought 5 of these drives for a 4 bay external RAID box (one as a spare). On delivery I used SeaTools, as recommended by Scan tech support, to check the drives. Straight away 2 failed. I returned them, however as I needed to get the RAID box up and running a.s.a.p. I had to buy two replacement drives, costing me more postage. When the new drives arrived I was able to set-up and initialise a RAID 10 disk. After about 2 hours and having copied about 500GB of data I got a constant beep telling me that another hard drive had failed. Thankfully I'd bought a spare, which I put in and the box started to rebuild the RAID disk.So I bought 7 identical WD Red 3TB drives and 3 of them failed. Current sweet spot in the WD Red range
31 December 2014

What can one say about these drives that hasn't already been said? They're reliable, quiet, cool-running and currently the best price per TB in the range. I've had four of them on a Highpoint RAID controller running non-stop since last April and there hasn't been a single entry in the controller event log. Although they're not the fastest drives available, four of them in RAID5, even on a SATA II controller, will saturate a gigabit network connection so what more do you need? I don't like them as much as desktop drives and prefer the more expensive WD Blacks for this but for NAS use it's hard to find better.

Good drives at a decent cost-storage ratio
6 March 2014

Good price for reliable 3TB drives. The spec sheets show low error rates and high life time expectancy, with average throughput for 7.2K SATA disks.I ordered four of these from Scan for a new NAS. I was performing S.M.A.R.T tests on them all after unpacking, then load testing and restarting with S.M.A.R.T. One was failing S.M.A.R.T tests on arrival but emailed the S.M.A.R.T results and the outputs from badblocks and they replace it strait away without question. So that was annoying but the replacement and the original three are all working flawlessly with 0 errors or failed tests. I have since built them into a Linux software RAID5 which required an 8 hour sync, then dumped 3TB of distributed media on to them. They work just great. Great product for the price

I bought my first 1TB WD Red back in 2012 awesome drive. I was using it on my previously build PC for data storage works perfectly I'm still using it 2016 got buckup just in case :D I've decided to buy 3TB WD Red for storage on new build I did by the end of 2015 with Skylake and I'm very pleased with it. I would recommend this drive as reliable storage having quite a few HDD since mid 80's it's not nice to have data lost due to drive failure. In my system Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV Atx case with noiseblockers 140 mm fans cooling the drive temp is about 28C idle under load about 34C max. I've formatted it with GPT partition after format I have 2.72 TB of available space on Windows 10. Only minor thing which in my case doesn't bother me but something I should mention is the low but audible head search noise while ie. checking folder size that contains music etc platters are very quiet and it's quite well balanced drive that doesn't generate a lot of vibration while in use watching movies stored noise is not noticeable. Drive can be used in NAS for up to 8 drives and it's covered by 3 year warranty. Overall great size, price and Scan as usual excellent service shipped fast packed well very happy :D

Bought this to go with my other 3TB WD Red WD30EFRX HD to fit in my Synology Diskstation DS214+. Fantastic discs. Extremely reliable and quiet and don't get hot.Not using RAID configuration and have instead opted to have two separate volumes in Synology.New HD being used to record CCTV footage from three HikVision cameras running at full resolution.100% perfect. Can't recommend Scan enough. No point in buying from anywhere else.

Only time will tell....

These are good quality, reliable drives. Maybe not the fastest on the market but that's not a problem for me in a RAID5 NAS with SSD cache. They're way quieter than the old desktop drives I had before and that is a big bonus. They seem to run a bit cooler than the 7200rpm drives too.Obviously we'll see how well they perform over the next few years but they do come with a 3 year warranty so that's comforting. I feel that my data is in safe hands finally.

Reliable with excellent Warranty
3 December 2014

The WD Red family of drives are an excellent choice for anyone wanting to set up a home NAS. They are quiet when used, fast enough to stream a couple of BD movies at full bit-rate and come with the excellent 3 year WD Warranty (compared to the 2 years of the WD Green drives).I bought six 3Tb Reds from Scan.co.uk and all six passed two full pre-clear passes without a single issue or bad sector. I am confident that my NAS will perform flawlessly for years. It is particularly pleasing to be able to use WD's online Warranty Checker where you can put the drive serial number into the website and the remaining warranty is verified. This makes me confident that if there is ever an issue with a drive, I will be assisted.
