I recently bought a new version of Western Digital Blue hard drives and i totally regret it. While the drive itself is great and fast there is something that throws all of it's pros into a water and that is their new feature called "head parking" which literally turns off your hard disk each 8 seconds and makes your computer unstable and causes a lot of issues especially if you use your computer for work or gaming. I do not recommend this product to anyone who is using his computer for gaming or working.

I was given a laptop labeled "broken/trash" from a corporation that was cleaning their IT closets. The original HGST 750GB HDD had tons of sector errors and intermittently booted to the login screen (about 2 out of 15 boot attempts made it to the login screen). Decided to upgrade the HDD capacity for the next owner l, so I picked up this WD Black 1TB drive and I loaded a fresh image of Win 10 Pro and Office 10 Pro. The Probook had an imbedded Win 8 code, which worked flawlessly when activating Win 10. Ran several hardware diagnostics in BIOS. No issues found. Drive runs quiet and cool. Startup is about 18 seconds. Installed all the HP drive protection software, then donated it to a person in need of a laptop for school. I love seeing a happy face each time they get ... MoreI was given a laptop labeled "broken/trash" from a corporation that was cleaning their IT closets. The 500GB 2.5" Black drive I was sent would not partition when I tried to Install Windows 10 on it. Each time I tried, at a grand total of 3 separate times, Windows utility could not make any partitions nor format the drive. I sent it back for a refund. I ended up buying an OEM 2017 vintage WD Black 500GB 2.5" drive on Amazon for half the cost of this new one. The "open box" drive with zero hours (and most likely zero warranty) from Amazon worked perfectly and has been fine now for almost a month being used every day. It's not acceptable to buy a NEW drive from the manufacturer's website and have it immediately fail right out of the box. Qaulity Control needs to do a better job. C'mon WD!

Got these drives to add some extra storage on one of my systems. It was in a uATX Case and had only 2.5" bays available. These are nice 7200 RPM drives that bench out just as fast as the 3.5" versions so I knew they would fit the bill. The system ad a 512Gb 950 Pro SSD but needed some extra bulk storage for movies pictures etc. So added 2 of these in a RAID-0 works like a charm. The reason I recommend these over others is 1) 7200RPM (most the 2.5" are 5400RPM and the difference is very noticeable) 2) Unlike most 2.5" drives they have the same performance as the 3.5" most have reduced performance in comparison.
I have two of these from previous computers which died. Use them as external HD's. Didn't know the new one had to be initialized & formatted till it came in. I spent 4 days trying to get it done & every set of directions failed - the ones which came with the drive, three sets downloaded from WD's site, two more off Google. My computers (2) refused to react as the direction said. I finally just figured it out myself.
I purchased 3 of these guys to throw in old game consoles and run them for a little while now and am content to say they are every bit as new as they say they are, and otherwise function great. Bonus points with this exact model being the older discontinued CMR model, vs the current offering from WD coming with the inferior SMR technology to save the corporation a dollar. Overall great purchase, if you're looking for a solid little CMR drive, these are it.
I used this to backup my SSD system disk. SSD to this HD was no problem. I removed it and put it on a shelf after testing to make sure all was good. For this purpose I did not need one of the more durable drives like the WD black. As an archive disk this worked prefect. For a Data Drive I would use a larger and most likely a more durable Drive.
It is a mechanical hard drive. I got it for my wife's old Dell laptop and it did not work. It was not the hard drive's fault, but other issues. I will keep it for future use as an external hard drive. It's typical mechanical hard drive with speed and noise. None of those mechanical hard drives are reliable compared to newer hard drive versions out now.
I own many WD Black hard drives because of the higher reliability over the other cheaper models. I use them for basic computer work and to store a large number of digital photos (plus backups). Hard drives are not the place to buy the cheapest. Losing data is bad news.
okay, so i was about to send this thing back. talking about the 500gb refurbished drive. was super noisy clicky, did not like any windows system. i put it in my linux system to mess with it, including rewriting the superblocks which froze up the system, tried formatting multiple times with ext4, and the hard drive had an abnormally loud clicking sound going on, so i just just messing with it before about to send it back. and i also tried 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/sdb' and that froze up the system too, in between the other attempts, then all of a sudden a cat urandom ended with out errors, so i just rebooted out of a knee jerk, then formatted JFS filesystem over the whole drive and it works perfect now, purrs like a kitten no more weird sound after 5 days now. so not ... Moreokay, so i was about to send this thing back. talking about the 500gb refurbished drive. was super noisy clicky, did not like any windows system. i put it in my linux system to mess with it, including rewriting the superblocks which froze up the system, tried formatting multiple times with ext4, and the hard drive had an abnormally loud clicking sound going on, so i just just messing with it before about to send it back. and i also tried 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/sdb' and that froze up the system too, in between the other attempts, then all of a sudden a cat urandom ended with out errors, so i just rebooted out of a knee jerk, then formatted JFS filesystem over the whole drive and it works perfect now, purrs like a kitten no more weird sound after 5 days now. so not sure what tosay except they are not refurbishing these drives correcly and you can maybe make them work if your really force it. good luck. got this drive for $14 and it was tottally worth it.
