A manufacturer refurbished drive should not have errors out of the box. This 4tb drive has severe spin-up time errors and temperature errors according to CrystalDiskInfo Reports. I had a difficult time initializing and formatting the drive when I first received it. I guess that must have been why the seller emphasized that the drive had an extended warranty through 2027. He must have known that they were bad out of the box. This is not what I expected to have to deal with with a Western Digital Black hard drive. I have bought quite a few of the WD Black drives, both new and used, over the years and have NEVER seen this kind of problem to this extent with the WD Black hdd product line. I guess it is up to me to contact WD and fight for a warranty replacement now.

I purchased 3 of these guys to throw in old game consoles and run them for a little while now and am content to say they are every bit as new as they say they are, and otherwise function great. Bonus points with this exact model being the older discontinued CMR model, vs the current offering from WD coming with the inferior SMR technology to save the corporation a dollar. Overall great purchase, if you're looking for a solid little CMR drive, these are it.
This HDD works in my HP Pavilion desktop. It gets noisy at times, for no apparent reason, and at times I have had to reboot my desktop to stop the noise. Otherwise, it reads fast and has given me 4x the storage I began with. It works with my Digital Audio Workstations as well, without slowing or freezing. Being a disc drive, I know the storage will stay good, even with a prolonged period without power if that were to ever happen, but I would prefer solid state if I had the option within my price range for the same space.*Note: I did have to get my computer to detect this drive before it was recognized for formatting, however that went fine, I was able to format the drive and it's running as it should.
New build and using as a storage drive. Mounted in HDD enclosure of an ASUS GT502 case. Once initialized these drives have a slight clunk every 5 seconds. If hard mounted in case it will amplify that noise. I put some thin rubber sticky grommets around mounting holes which has dampened that noise. I need to look to see if I can dampen the drive mount but not sure how much room between it and case yet. Currently the noise is very faint.If you hold drive in hand the noise is inaudible. This is why if you can isolate the drive with rubber mounts. Then you won;t hear that noise. I have 11 year old Seagate Barracuda drives that are dead silent but were only 1TB which is why I wanted something larger.

It only reads when it boots, it lags bios, and refuses to take on an new installation of an OS. It also has absolutely horrible read and write speeds when trying to install ANYTHING (takes 45 minutes+ to preallocate, download, and install a 300mb update). When this hdd gets even CLOSE to loading an os it turns off all my peripherals and tries its absolute hardest to restart itself -- holding the power button or reset button dont work; i have to cut power from the back. I’ve been building PCs for almost 11 1/2 years and normally when I run into a major issue I go to the geek squad to double check my work and I took my PC in and it was a problem with one of my M.2 memory sticks, and my OS. I told the technician that my mechanical hard drive was OK and that there was nothing wrong with it. He called me back and said yes the mechanical drive was bad, and that they sent it off to be worked on turns out that mechanical drive was OK but it made me realize that I needed another hard drive so I went and I bought another one. These hard drives were hard and they last a really long time, if you’re using them on a daily basis, so I totally recommend the western digital product .
This drive is a great performer for being a hard disk. Pretty quiet, and the performance is very good. It's great for archives, photos, data files, video files, business programs, and even the non-SSD required games. The reliability is also great for WD-BLACK drives. I have a larger version of this drive, and I use the heck out of it, with zero issues.
