Best Value Upgrade Your PS5 Can Get

This required researching specs of various M.2 drives to ensure it would be fast enough to work in the PS5 and also looking into how to add a heatsink as most didn’t include that and it WOULD require heatsinks to not melt down inside the hardest to find gaming console since the Nintendo Wii fiasco of the early 2000s.All that to say that Western Digital cracked the code for expanding your PS5 without breaking the bank or having to put much thought into anything. Their WD_Black are well regarded in the video game fandom, they’re good long lasting drives without costing a fortune. In fact, the external drive I’d been using for my PS4 games was another WD_Black Playstation drive and it’s been great for the past couple years I’ve had my PS5, so I can personally verify they do good work! The SN850P is no exception so far. It's nearly twice the capacity of the factory hard drive (of the 1tb capacity Sony installed, only about 670gb is available out of the box due to system files) and it has the heat sink built in so all you need to do is install it. Installation is easier than you’d think, removing the plastic “wing” of the PS5, undoing a couple screws, and putting in the WD_Black drive before reversing to put it back together. For the past week I’ve had it the speeds are on par with the default factory drive, and while it could change as it gets older it’s plenty fast enough even if it slowed a bit. Also, longevity isn’t something I can speak to but as before I’ve had Western Digital drives before and my most recent external Playstation drive hasn’t given me any concerns for years, I have no reason to doubt this won’t perform admirably as well. The price on this is right and the name indicates quality, there’s a lot of options on the market but I don’t think you could do much better (and you can do much worse!) if you pop a WD_Black SSD into your console. I really don’t think you’d be disappointed.

Users preference.Adding this storage is not like an external storage ps5 device/hard drive/. No worries about having to plugging in a device through usb. No slow speeds due to a gaming running starting through usb. Simply just like adding an SSD to a computer. If you need more storage Western Digital offers this device in higher storage levels.Major plus! Sony recommends that you install an SSD with a heatsink and not all SSDs come with a heatsink and you would have to purchase this in addition to a hard drive. What's great is that the WD Black has a heatsink already built onto the SSD so no worries here! Plug and play!

It also includes a heatsink. Inside the package, there isn't much to talk about. You get the drive in a plastic shell, and a folded up paper which just has warranty info in about 100 languages, but no instructions or anything. Which isn't a huge loss, because you can easily look up a 1 minute video which shows you how to install the drive. Still, I would've appreciated an official video from WD on how to install the drive. But as I said before, it's easy enough to figure out yourself or find another video. You just pop off the PS5's outer shell, unscrew two small screws, move the little spacer thing to correspond with the physical size of the new SSD, and then screw the screws back in and put the faceplate back on. Next time you turn on the PS5, it will automatically detect the new drive and ask you to format it. In all, the whole process from start to finish took maybe 10 minutes, and that's including finding and watching a video. The actual performance of the drive has been nice. I can't tell a difference between it and the internal drive. I have installed a few different games that I used to have installed on the internal, and performance has been just as good as when I had them on the internal drive. Overall I am very happy with this drive.

Great Way to Add Internal Memory

The SN850P Internal SSD by Western Digital is specially designed for PS5 and desktops. Per WD’s website, they want the PS5 to be at least at system software version 21.02-04.00.00 or higher. If you update to the current version prior to the installation, this may help to avoid some installation issues.Next, you need to take apart the PS5 to expose the internal slot for the SSD. You slide the PS5 cover off, remove the plate cover and screw, and then remove the set screw which holds the SSD in place. To install, you’ll place the set screw ring in place, insert the SSD (somewhat angled before laying flat), screw in the set screw, replace the plate cover and screw, and reattach the outer PS5 case. The last part is to set the PS5 back up and run through the formatting process on the new hard drive. When completed, it told me that my read speed was around 6.2 GP/s. I believe that the whole process for me took about 30 minutes, but that included both the system update and the hard drive formatting.ResultWith about 30 minutes of effort, I was able to more than double my internal memory on my PS5. I can play directly from this memory as opposed to using an external hard drive which requires you to load to the PS5 to play (which means you still need to have available internal memory). If you plan to store a lot on the PS5 you may also consider the 2TB or the 4TB versions.Overall, I am pretty happy with the installation and the results. Though I didn’t get one of the larger SSDs, I am glad that WD makes those options as well. You can always upgrade to a larger HD if you want. I’d recommend this product, and am giving it 5 stars.

Official Licensed SSD for the PS5
25 June 2023

Searching for an SSD that is compatible with the PS5 can be a daunting task. You must ensure that the SSD meets the requirements. The plus side to this is that it is a lot cheaper to upgrade the storage compared to Xbox Series consoles since it’s using widely available computer parts. In order to avoid any possible headaches and travel back to the store it’s better to go with a Sony-licensed SSD. It will also save you the hassle of having to find a heatsink.Since the heatsink is already attached to the SSD installing the SSD should only take a few minutes. The only part I struggle with was removing the top cover of the PS5 in order to gain access to the SSD bay that is secured by a screw. Once you remove that screw you will find another screw that is needed to keep the SSD in place. All you have to do is remove the screw and insert the SSD with the exposed gold pins towards the bottom opening. Once you have the SDD securely inserted, use the screw to secure it down. After that re-attached the SSD tray and secure it down with the screw. After you have everything back together the PS5 will the SSD and let you know that it needs to be formatted. I also recommend that you go to YouTube to view the Sony video walkthrough of installing an SSD.Overall going with the licensed Sony option can cost a little bit more but it’s well worth it since you know that it will be fully compatible with the PS5. For peace of mind and not having to deal with the hassle of returning back to the store, I highly recommend the WD Black for your PS5 storage needs.

In fact, most of the thickness of the NVME is the heatsink. That said, the NVME fits in the PS5 under the EMF shield without any issues.Installing the SSD first in a PC to test the maximum throughput reveals that, while the drive is rated at 7,300MBs read, it clocks in just above 6900MBs or just a little over 94% of the stated rate. Maybe that is why WD lists it as up to 7300MBs, but in testing it never achieved close to that speed. While it would be nice if it was closer to the stated spec, the difference is unlikely to ever be noticed. Speeds stayed consistent over repeated runs suggesting the heatsink is doing a good job of removing heat from the memory. If for any reason you need a new SSD in your PC more than in your PS5, the SN850P can handle the job well.Moving the drive over to the PS5 the hardest part of the installation is getting the angle just right to pop off the outer cover. On first startup the PS5 prompts you to format the drive and warns you that any data on the drive will be lost. After formatting a read test is performed and while reports say the PS5 seems to understate the performance of each drive, the SN850 benchmarked at just over 6200MBs. Now we are down to less than 85% of the drive’s stated speed. It is still workable, but if the benchmark is correct it is possible in some cases this would be a noticeable difference in performance between the WD drive and the factory internal drive. That said, overall performance was fast. Transferring Jedi: Fallen Order from the internal drive to the WD drive took less than 50 seconds for nearly 52GB. Starting up the game it was hard to notice any difference in speed. During a stretch of over 2 hours of gameplay there was no noticeable difference in speed. Smaller games no one could tell any difference regardless of if the game was installed on the internal drive or the WD drive. It felt seamless. The only difference we could notice was having over double the storage we started with.Final ThoughtsWhile the WD SN850P might miss the spec sheet by a little bit, the difference isn’t noticeable during use in the PS5 but the solid reliability with the large heatsink is. If you are in the market for upgraded storage for your PS5 and value a drive that is fully certified for use in the PS5, it’s hard to go wrong with the WD SN850P.

Super fast drive and easy addition to any system
8 July 2023

Really like this WD SN850P PCIe Gen4 drive.Performance: The SN850P utilizes PCIe Gen4 technology, which allows for significantly faster read and write speeds compared to the previous Gen3 SSDs. Rated for sequential read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 5,300 MB/s. This means almost instantaneous response for super quick system boots and blazing fast game loading times. Also blazes through handling large files and data transfers making it ideal for content creators or anyone who requires/desires high-speed storage.Endurance: This drive is built with excellent components. Rated for mean time between failure of 1.75 million hours!!! Again making it a great and reliable component for both gaming and content creation/storage.This drive ... MoreReally like this WD SN850P PCIe Gen4 drive.Performance: The SN850P utilizes PCIe Gen4 technology, which allows for significantly faster read and write speeds compared to the previous Gen3 SSDs. Again making it a great and reliable component for both gaming and content creation/storage.This drive includes an excellent large heatsink for dissipating heat during long and intense sessions. Proper heat management allows the drive to maintain optimal performance during sustained heavy workloads.Compatibility: The SN850P is designed for the PS5 and works flawlessly when incorporated. But this drive will also work in any system that supports PCIe Gen4 technology. It’s backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 interfaces but you won't be able to fully utilize its maximum performance potential without a Gen4.Price: Price seems about right for this drive and is competitive with the current market of high performance SSD’s of its capacity and abilities. In conclusion, the Western Digital WD Black 1TB SN850P Internal SSD has been super impressive at delivering exceptional performance, trusted reliability that comes with the Western Digital name, and conveniently included heat management built in. With its PCIe Gen4 interface, it offers incredibly fast speeds and is a great choice for demanding gaming sessions and/or content creation. I have thoroughly enjoyed having this drive as part of my setup. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to add a little more storage space but wanting super speed with it.

Super simple way to expand you PS5 storage!
27 June 2023

This WD Black PCIe storage is a fast and easy way to upgrade your storage, it's appreciated that Sony went with a no proprietary form factor for expanding storage. There are a ton of options out there, one thing that Sony suggests is a specific minimum read/write speed. The great thing with the Sony Licensed sticks is that they will meet the requirements without you needing to do any research. Heatsink is another factor that is recommended, which helps to avoid overheating or damaging anything. The slot for the memory is hidden under the side panel, on my disc version PS5, you will need to remove that panel. There is a single screw that you remove to uncover the slot, there is also a screw with a standoff that you will need to move to secure the SSD (They both are phillips). Once you place the drive in and secure it, be sure to place the cover back over the slot to ensure proper air flow.Once you plug your console back in you will be prompted to format the drive, this will set up your drive to be used for game storage and test the speed of the drive. Once set up, you can select the drive as your default storage location or select it if your internal storage is full. With these drives in spec for optimal use with the Playstation 5, I didn't notice anything in terms of longer load times or issues with simply reading, it's a separate storage slot, but to your game library it is treated all the same. I like to keep the games I am playing constantly on the internal drive, and place everything else on this internal PCIe drive, in terms of PS5 games. I have an external WD drive that I use for my PS4 games. It's great how PS5 handles the games. I am able to choose my prefered storage location for PS5 games, but also set my PS4 games to install to a different drive.Installation is simple enough, I don't take the panels off very often, so I had to look up which corner to pull up and slide the cover off. It's very easy to find, I think a small photo on the included documentation in terms of installation would be nice. But this is simple enough that most anyone should be able to install, and a installation video would show how easy of a process this is to anyone!More storage is always welcome, this officially licensed product with WD just lets you know you got a manufacturer suggested drive, and takes the question out of buying.

Since it is tied directly to the motherboard on the Playstation there is no hesitancy at all.Highly recommend adding the additional space for your storage, I would recommend doing the 2TB drive instead of the 1TB if you have a choice. Definitely worth it.
