This is a great SSD expansion drive. When I installed it, the PS5 stated that read speeds came out to 6,539 MB/s. It’s short of the 7,300 MB/s advertised, but that was to be expected. All the same, in use, I can’t notice a difference between the console storage and the expansion drive (more on that later). The drive is listed by the PS5 as providing 2.1 TB of new space, with 500+ MB tied up in system files, so the usable total listed was 2 TB. My first task after installation was to free up the console drive space so I moved 475+ GB onto the SSD. It took about 6 minutes. I use a 2 TB external HDD to store older PS4 downloaded titles and game files for older games I hardly touch, so my next task was to move some of that content over. 114+ GB took 21 minutes to move ... MoreThis is a great SSD expansion drive. I use a 2 TB external HDD to store older PS4 downloaded titles and game files for older games I hardly touch, so my next task was to move some of that content over. 114+ GB took 21 minutes to move from the external USB drive to the SSD. After the housecleaning, I was finally able to start testing. My saved content from Jedi: Survivor loaded within seconds. I almost felt like the game loaded into my save file faster than when the console storage was used. I played for about a half an hour and decided to try something else that would test the new storage. I have a copy of the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus saved to my PS Plus account that I’ve been meaning to try out so I downloaded it to the SSD. It took 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I hadn’t played the game before on the console storage so I don’t have any means for comparison, but I will say that the game loaded and worked seamlessly. In all the time it took me to get through 15 of the 16 colossi, I didn’t see any hiccups or lag. If anyone is looking to upgrade their PS5 storage, this should be a serious consideration. It’s great that it came with a heatsink, but for the price, I think it should. One serious warning about installation (which has no bearing on the review of the SSD itself), getting the game off and opening the SSD expansion bay are not difficult at all. However, unscrewing the mounting screw and spacer was impossible. The screw was too tight for me to get out and I ended up striping the head. Ultimately, I had to buy a third party screw to secure the SSD in place, but at least the placement of the provided screw and spacer were out of the way. I’ve read that overtightened mounting screws provided by Sony are a common thing, so be aware ahead of time.

I found an article online that included step-by-step instructions (along with pictures), and I was pleased with how painless the process was. After rebooting my PS5, the process was pretty much automated, with the system formatting the new hard drive automatically. I was a bit worried that the installation might lead to some problems, yet it was extremely easy, and I feel that just about anyone can complete it with the proper instructions. After loading up the new drive with several games, I felt that load times were pretty much identical to the baseline (before the installation of the SSD). While nothing felt noticeably faster, I was happy that there were no performance losses. I personally have felt that the PS5 runs incredibly fast, and this new hard drive doesn't diminish that fact at all. Best of all, now I can keep a huge collection of games downloaded at all times, and don't have to worry about deleting them when a new one comes along!Bottom Line: If you are looking for a simple solution to expand the storage size of your PS5, look no further than this awesome piece of hardware!

I have included some pics showing what the PS5 system shows after initial install & what shows from installing 41 games(!). Couple COD's, several PS5 games from the new Diablo IV to GOW Ragnarök, Spiderman, etc. I chose 400GB plus available for upcoming games this year like FF 16 (91gbs) and future PS plus titles as well. The software install process was automatic with a confirmation button press to initially reformat for the PS5, then the downloading started for many hours to add games.I included the hardware install section here last due to the process requiring me to look online on how to properly install the SSD inside the PS5. Nothing too scary, use a small Phillips screwdriver and only takes 5 minutes. I think I struggled getting the PS5 side covers off more, to be honest. The following is a review of the actual numbers this SSD provides: I added 41 games that filled about 1.5 TB that averaged out to 36.5 GBs per game. There is something to be said for having this many games at your fingertips. I played games I haven't in years, simply because of convenience. Lastly, the transfer rate seemed to go about 1.5 GB/s from PS5 internal SSD to the WD SSD as well. A 60 GB game only took about 20-30 seconds!Even if you don't necessarily need extra storage, I love having all my favorite games in one place, I don't have to download again, just a quick 5-minute install. My tip is to make folders asap, trust me.Highly recommend this product to everyone.

Blazing Fast PS5 Storage Expansion
20 June 2023

I'm thankful that this generation of console has made it super simple to add extra storage. Even better that they support blazing fast nvme 4x4 storage, and that storage is really affordable these days.Sony recommends a heatsink for the nvme drives to keep temps in check, and this being designed for the PS5, is exactly the right size to fit in the nvme slot. Once you remove that you're greeted by another screw and a standoff ring.Formatting the drive takes seconds at first boot of the PS5 once installed, it then measures the read speed to ensure the performance is up to standard. My example measured at 6514MB/s. On par with my 980Pro in my desktop pc, which is insanely fast IMO.I then went to work on transferring games from the internal storage to this newly installed drive. First to move was FF7 Remake with the PS5 update clocking in at 81GB. The entire move took under a minute to transfer the files. Next I wanted to try more, so I grabbed three games, 180GB total, and it took under two minutes to move those large files.I'd say the internal storage on the PS5 is already about as good as you can get these days, now going from 825GB -> 2825GB means I shouldn't really need to delete games. Sure eventually it'll max out but with this size and speed I get to keep more local content ready to go when the mood strikes. This should be a no brainer for anyone with PS+ and the sheer volume of free games available, download until your heart's content.

Excellent PS5 SSD Choice For Speed & Storage
16 June 2023

The WD SN850P SSD is a top choice for use in a PlayStation 5 but I’m unsure it has an advantage over its lower priced twin sibling, the WD SN850X with heatsink. On Western Digital’s website and other marketing materials, the SN850X with heatsink is listed as compatible with PS5. The SN850P is endorsed by Sony, the SN850X is not. The PS5 also has a slightly larger heatsink than the SN850X with heatsink. Those differences and their respective MSRPs, from my own research, seem to be what separate the two models. (I want to stress here this comparison is strictly between the SN850P and SN850X with included pre-installed heatsink.)The WD SN850P SSD is an update to the WD SN850, and, at least theoretically, offers speed improvement over its descendant. (I want to stress here this comparison is strictly between the SN850P and SN850X with included pre-installed heatsink.)The WD SN850P SSD is an update to the WD SN850, and, at least theoretically, offers speed improvement over its descendant. The WD SN850 was well regarded for its fast, smooth nature, so this release is more of a refinement of that older model.Out of the box, the WD SN850P feels solid with great build quality. The pre-attached heatsink is beefy and its industrial design is fun to admire, though not for long since installation hides it from view. I can only assume the heatsink is doing its job as I’ve yet to get any signs of overheating during 45min to 1 hour play sessions. I’m only a casual gamer and realize 1-hour sessions are not a long time to true gamers.Installation into the PS5 is simple, only requires a screwdriver, and will not itself void your PS5 warranty – Sony even has an official quick “how to” video on YouTube. Do be sure to follow directions including eliminating static electricity before handling the SSD or opening the PS5. The entire process took me about 5 minutes, only because I went slow removing the PS5’s cover, having never done it before and not wanting to break anything. The rest of the procedure is effortless. The WD SN850P has a perfect fit in all directions inside the expansion port. The PS5 automatically and quickly formats the SSD at the next “power on” – with user permission – and then reports the read speed of the new drive. My PS5 reported 6527 MB/s. I’ve included a screen shot since “pics or it didn’t happen.” The “in real life” read speed on this WD SN850P seems unchanged from the older WD SN850 for PS5 based on benchmark videos I’ve watched for the latter model. That’s not surprising since most of the speed gains in the WD SN850P are with its write functionality. I’ve also never seen any kind of storage device from any manufacturer consistently perform near its theoretical speeds.Once the SSD is ready to use you can use the “storage” menu on your PS5 to assign where your current and future games and apps should be stored; either on the SSD or the PS5’s onboard storage. It’s quick and easy to transfer games from one storage location to the other. My PS5 shows that I have the full 2GB of usable storage on the WD SN850P. Thumbs up there because its common to see market storage sizes that are bigger than actual storage size once formatted.Game play on the WD SN850P is terrific as it should be on a high-end SSD. Perhaps it’s a placebo effect, but I feel like game and scene load faster on this drive than on the PS5’s stock drive. Performance is super smooth, no hanging or stuttering at all even after playing for almost an hour and letting the PS5 and SDD heat up a bit. I’ve sampled fast moving games like Gran Turismo 7 as well as slower games like MLB The Show 2022.There is no doubt the WD SN850P more than gets the job done for PS5 game play and auxiliary storage. But with the specs of the lower priced SN850X with heatsink being nearly identical to the WD SN850P, the elephant in the room for me is, is the PS logo and Sony endorsement on the WD SN850P worth its extra cost over the SN850X? That’s a value question every buyer has to calculate into their own priorities. Some may find value and comfort in installing a “authorized,” product over a merely “compatible” one. Personally, in this case, I’d rather have a few more dollars in my pocket for games.

Greatly expand your PS5 storage!

The Bottom Line: The WD_Black SN850P NVMe 2TB SSD more than triples the PS5’s base storage with performance that is equal to or better than the internal drive.Review: The SSD has a built-in heat sink, and so it’s ready to install into the PS5 out of the box. The PS5 Settings manage the internal drive and SSD separately, providing options to move content between the two and allowing you to target which drive new games should be installed on (currently you can also set different targets depending on whether it’s a PS5 or PS4 game). I began by moving my current library (~650GB) from the internal storage to SSD, which just took a little over 3 minutes. The WD_Black has higher read/write specs than the PS5 internal drive, which occasionally creates a noticeable difference in load times. In my playing, I've found that smaller areas load noticeably faster off the SSD than the internal drive. For medium and large areas, it seems to depend on the game. In a few instances, for PS4 games that were never optimized for PS5, I did notice that some areas took a 1/2 second longer to load from the SSD. Perhaps this is just poor code optimization. Overall, there are no real drawbacks to this drive for expanding PS5 storage, and I highly recommend the product.

Install ALL THE GAMES!!
2 July 2023

The PS5 is a GREAT console. I've got all the major current gen consoles and while I was initially going to avoid the PS5 because I am not a fan of the design aesthetic, after a few months of streaming games from Playstation Plus on my PC I decided that I'd like the first party experience. So a PS5 was purchased and while I still do not like the design, I do love the user experience and having the ability to play games like SackBoy: A Big Adventure that I didn't have access to previously. The drawback to the convenience of having games installed locally and taking a sometimes inconsistent internet connection out of the equation is, of course, the amount of storage each game uses. While not terrible, Sony doesn't really have an out of box PS5 SKU that provides adequate storage for a robust offline collection. Thankfully, however, they did make adding additional storage very easy AND they took the good guy route and allowed for 3rd party NVMe drives.WD's WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN is one such drive. Tuned specifically for the performance demands of the PS5 and with a more than adequate heatsink, it is a fantastic upgrade. Installation is extremely easy and once you've got the side panel buttoned back up and your console powered on setup is as simple as can be. It only took me about 20 minutes total to open up my PS5, add the drive, close it back up, power on, format, and begin transferring my games over. The only thing I did notice is that the speed WD advertises vs what the PS5 reports were a bit different. I did not notice any performance issues and WD does state "up to" 7300 mb/s read / 6600 mb/s write and not that those exact speeds would definitely be achieved. All in all, I am very happy with the drive and have recommended it to friends who have also picked one up and are happy with it.

Quick and easy way to upgrade your PS5!!
30 June 2023

I was lucky enough to pick up my PS5 about a year ago, and like most people I've been running it with an external drive. The internal SSD is obviously spec'd as Sony intended, but having both new PS5 digital games and a sturdy backlog of PS4 games, it just falls short on capacity. Hence the external drive - splitting the PS5 games on the internal SSD , and running the PS4 games from the external drive. It generally involves a lot of shuffling things around after install , so I decided it was time to upgrade to a 'real' solution using the SN850PFirst of all , don't be intimidated but the install.Once you've got the case of the PS5 its a single screw to open up the drive bay, and then another single screw to hold the SSD in-place. All in all takes about 5 minutes (no accounting for the time it takes you to unplug all the cables of course!)Next thing to note, is that I installed this SSD with the primary goal of simplifying the storage layout and removing the need for an external drive. at 2TB It obviously achieved that, but what I wasn't expecting was the improvement in drive access speed.Obviously compared to the external USB drive, its not a huge surprise that the internal SN850P is faster, but with some fairly large game copies as part of my upgrade, it seems to be quick a bit quicker than the internal storage too.I don't have any official benchmarks to prove it beyond my own observations of moving files on and off the drive, but safe to say this is an upgrade for both capacity AND performance - now I use the SN850P as my default location for all the active games, and the internal PS5 to handle all the game save data.Easy install , vast improvement and enhances my PS5!

Simple & Great Storage Update

All-in-all I would say that this product is not difficult to install. On a scale of one to five, with one being extremely easy and five being extremely difficult, I would rate this product at a 2. The only trouble I had was fiddling a bit with the SSD when actually installing it (a bit of difficulty figuring out up from down), and removing the side plates on the PlayStation, but otherwise the installation went smoothly with no damage or troubles. The only items you will need when installing your new SSD is a small Phillips head screwdriver, and a way to help keep track of screws. A steady, gentle hand helps as well, as while it is difficult to lose a screw in the PlayStation 5, it is still possible.First, the PlayStation 5 system must be completely shut off, and unplugged. Next, the bottom support plate that keeps the PlayStation 5 upright must be removed, which is easily done by removing a single large screw. The next step is to remove the rear side plate on the PlayStation, which is the side that does not have PlayStation’s logo on it. This is where I ran into a bit of trouble and had to finesse the plate a bit in order to get it off. This is done by lifting up gently on the topmost portion of the plate, then sliding it forward and off. This reveals the inner portions of the PlayStation, as well as a convenient gray metal plate that covers where the SSD is going to go. This plate can be removed by a single screw (don’t lose it!). After this plate is removed, the SSD slot is visible, as well as a “spacer screw”. This screw helps keep the SSD secure and keeps it from moving. After removing the spacer screw, all I had to do was slot the SSD into place, which will make an affirming click, and then re-installing the spacer screw to secure the SSD in place. Afterwards, the gray cover can be replaced, and the PlayStation 5, re-assembled. After the PlayStation is booted up for the first time after installing the SSD, it will format your new SSD automatically for you, making you do less work. This lets you instantly gain access to your additional 2 terabytes of storage, as well as the performance boost granted by this product.Installation took approximately 5 to 10 minutes and was relatively simple. I have very little tech-savvy skills and know-how and have never once taken apart a computer or a PlayStation, yet thanks to the intuitiveness of both the PlayStation 5 system, and Western Digital’s simple design, I managed to install this product with ease, and it was honestly kind of fun! Now onto the performance. Before installing this product my PlayStation 5 had relatively fast load times, and little stuttering and buffering when either playing videogames or watching shows. However, after installing the Western Digital SSD, the improvements I saw were instant.Once the PlayStation formats the SSD for you, it gives you a system diagnostic of your new download and upload speeds and I noticed a huge improvement. The load times for my PlayStation 5 have been drastically reduced, and games that had the problem of painfully long load times are now a thing of the past for me. The games I play now have little to no stuttering whatsoever. Additionally, the 2 terabytes of storage let me install all of my favorite games without having to worry, while also keeping my actual console’s storage free for save-data, profiles, and screenshots/videos from my favorite gaming moments. Download times have dramatically increased as well, and updates that used to take hours now only take half the time, letting me jump back into the action twice as fast. Now even the most graphically demanding games load up with lightning speed thanks to the new SSD. This product does exactly what it is marketed to do and is well worth the cost. The product is accessible to people who may not be as technologically knowledgeable as others, and installation is easy and fun. The benefits the SSD provides well justify the cost, given the drastically improved load and download times, and additional storage space, it is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone looking to boost their gaming or streaming experience. There are also different things you can purchase to further boost your SSD’s performance! There is a heat-sink designed to adhere to the back of the SSD to help with over-heating issues. However, in my experience, heat was not an issue for my PlayStation even after hours of play. To conclude, the installation for this product was easy, simple, and only took 5 to 10 minutes even for someone with few technological knowledge. Due to the auto-formatting of the SSD the PlayStation does for you, I was able to instantly experience lightning-fast load and download times, and the massive amount of extra storage. I would rate this product 5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend this product to anyone who loves video games as much as I do.

So when I learned that WD is also offering official PS5-licensed drives with a 5-year warranty, I didn’t hesitate to give them a shot and I’m glad I did.The SN850P drive was very simple and easy to install. If this is your first time upgrading your drive on the PS5, there are plenty of tutorial videos online. The airflow-optimized heatsink looks cool and performs well. If you want to inspect what it looks like underneath the heatsink, you just take off the six T5 screws and peel the top heatsink cover off (see pic).I benchmarked the SN850P via CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 before installation on my Windows PC, and it scored 5994.46 MB/s sequential read and 6326.89 MB/s sequential write. The rest of the stats can be viewed from my screenshot. What this means is that the SN850P lives up to its marketing claims and is fast and efficient. With the SN850P’s great performance, long 5-year warranty, and efficient and cool-looking heatsink, I was initially going to rate it as 5-Stars. I feel inclined toward a 4- or 4.5-Stars ratings, however, due to its current price. At $0.11/GB for the 2TB SN850P, it’s almost twice as expensive as other brand-name 2TB PCIe Gen4 x4 drives. Even the slightly older 2TB WD SN850X with a 5-year warranty is currently selling for $0.07/GB. If you got the coin, then by all means get the latest and greatest SN850P for the PS5 from WD. But if you’re price-conscious like me and want better value, then either wait for the price to come down or get the older Western Digital SN850X.
