I bought this drive and was working up getting all the components for my computer and finally built it this past week. The other internal hard drive from segate works fine but this one will not work. When I try to switch to online from offline it says error drive not ready but when I go into details in the actual drive it says it’s “drive is ready”. I messed around with the cables and It wasn’t unplugged or anything different than my other internal HD. Pretty unfortunate that it doesn’t work. I threw away the original box as part of the cleanup so I don’t think I can return it either. That’s a fault of my own. Waste of a good chunk of money and I still need more storage :( I’m sure it would have been nice because of the amount of storage you get. Faster to start and stop than its 4TB predecessor and as silent as it gets (unlike 8TB+ counterparts). Despite being 5400rpm compared to 7200rpm for bigger disks, I didn't see a difference in term of use, most likely because your average computer won't take advantage on the additional speed which is apparently more important for supporting more storage in the same volume. Since it's 5400 it's also very silent compared to bigger disks and that's welcomed when used in a desktop computer sitting next to you all day. If I have to increase my storage I will not buy bigger disk but rather add an additional 6TB. In my case I use it primarily to store files that I don't need everyday (movies/photos etc) and only write to it once. There's not really going to be a significant speed boost there compared to a 64mb cache model (the WD60EZRZ). So: great drive, but if you need it for the same reasons I do: just buy the 64mb model and save yourself some money. I would only buy this model if you can get a good deal, the 64mb drive is not available or you just like having more expensive stuff with bigger numbers :)

As shown by my testing this is true (about 50% slower when writing-only was getting about 62 Mbps). Admittedly, this is an extreme test-most writes will be only a couple of files and less than a gigabyte for my use on the video server. I am hoping performance will be adequate in that usage. Note that I have used many WD drives over the years and hope to keep doing so but ... SMR recording is giving me some concern. I wish WD had not switched to this method of recording on the disk-I was quite happy with the CMR disks. THE WORST customer buying experience ever. WD shipped me the wrong product. They aren't even capable of replacing the drive with the one that I purchased. They told me they could only RMA return the product that was shipped and that I would have to attempt another purchase to get what I ordered. Seriously?! They offered a 20% discount, but I told them I would be purchasing Seagate hard drives from now on because of this experience.
I bought two 1TB drives. One was this Western Digital and the other a 1Tb Seagate. I have several drives made by each company and in 3.5 and 2.5. Both the latest two are now installed in my computers and working well. I have already given a favourable review on the Seagate and I am equally happy to give a favourable review on this Disk. I am very happy with this purchase.
Whenever you get a new hard drive, run a badblock scan, preferably the default 4 pass write/read test. If impatient, run for 2 passes, or control-c when its done checking the 2nd/3rd pass. Then check the S.M.A.R.T. data to see if there are any: Reallocated Sector Count*, Reallocation Count*, Current Pending Sector Count*, Uncorrectable Sector Count*, Write Error Rate, 0 to small amount of read error rate (some fields and values vary across drives and manufactures, but the sector/reallocated fields should always be 0). Once you start getting bad sectors, replace the drive ASAP. To test the drive: Download and boot up a Linux distro. There is an optional -c which specifics the amount of blocks at a time to process, it may or may not increase the speed. If you use it try -c 131072 or -c 65536, or -c 32768, or -c 16384. Might come in handy if testing multiple drives at once. Try running it for 10-20 seconds with a -c [xxxxxx] or leaving it out, and ctrl-c after 20 seconds--do that for 3-4 different block speeds to determine which one progresses the furthest @ 20 seconds (or whatever interval you count to). For me, leaving the -c option out worked best. What you are doing is exercising the drive and writing all: 00000000s, 11111111s, 10101010s, and 01010101s patterns across the entire space of the drive, and verifying that it correctly wrote every single bit that writes to the platter. Usually (not always) if a drive is bad, it will show up sooner than later, so you are giving the new drive a solid workout to determine if the drive is defective or not. These are mid-level desktop drives with only a 2-year warranty. Mid-Level HDDs used to have a 3 year (sometimes 5) year warranty. Yeah, it's not a bad idea to get into the mindset that when you buy a new HDD, don't expect to be able to use if for a few days until after you test it! It's only your data . . .

Most drive manufacturers will market a drive saying that it is a specific size when in fact the actual usable size is smaller. Basically, they use byte sizes measured in steps of 1,000 when the computer will actually read them in steps of 1024. Thus, the ACTUAL readout will be approx. 3.6 TB, NOT 4 TB. Knowing this beforehand would have saved me some trouble planning on hardware upgrades. Still, this drive does well, and it has some nice built-in features that will keep it stable for years to come.
