I needed a larger drive to be a backup to some Raid Disk that I have. This disk was on sale and looked like it would meet my needs.When I got it home - it simply did not work - it would not power on. Brought it back to BB the next day - and they replaced it - and had the drive delivered to my home within 48 hours. In my opinion this should have no affect on the review - and drives can fail for any number of reasons - and they were very professional in getting it replaced right away.The drive itself is working well. It is fairly quiet - and reasonably fast. I cannot say anything bad about it - it is working well on a daily basis

Technically, I recommend this to people who need lots of storage for a reasonable price. It seems reliable and is a handy backup for important files. I bout the 14TB model. Usable storage ends up being about 12TB. My major grip is that I cannot for the life of me get anywhere close to the advertised write speeds. I only get about 30mb-200mb per second write speed, and when it's advertised as up to 5000mb/s I'd at least expect a little more than what I get. I'm using the included cables with it and it just won't get any faster and caps at about 200. It's not too big of a deal for me since it's just backup for audio and video files, but the write speed makes moving data to it atrocious. Thankfully once it's there I don't have to move it anymore. The product description clearly claims this has "lightning-fast transfer speeds of up to 5,000MB/s via a USB 3.0 connection". This is complete bogus. The only drives on the market that reach 5000MB/s are Gen4 NVMe SSD's and above. The fact that this even claims you're getting 5000 MB/s via USB 3.0 is absurd. USB 3.0's max speed is 625 MB/s (5000 mbps or 5 gbps). 5000 MB/s would be 40000 mbps or 40 gbps.And either way, hard drives max out at about 250 MB/s at best. I have two of these drives and they max out at 230 MB/s. A far cry from the advertised 5000 MB/s speeds.As an external hard drive, this is good. Please fix the blatant lie in the product description.
This would be a easy 5 star but there are some things that essentially take it out of the "perfect" for me. Couple things in my experience with this device. One would be the plug ins, as this device sits on my desk, I don't use it that often other then just to store files on so I don't have it plugged in, and for me personally I think about how many times I will have to re plug over the course of owning this item and think the plugs will end up breaking before the device does. My only solution is to keep the power cord and the usb cord attached to the unit, so I have to keep the power cord and the usb cable attached to the back at all times until needing to use. For some reason I had the impression this was a plug and play and not a boot up device, and this information hadn't been apparent when purchased. speed, I do love the fact of the "sleep"-"standby" so it will wake up when you access it instead of running continuously when not used, but does need to spin up from sleep mode and does take the "8" seconds. As far as the transfer rate, my personal experience is that it is mildly slow for ME, Windows file transfer moves the files at 22MBPS tops, about 1GB per minute (unverified data) so 2-5GB worth of stuff does take 2-5 minutes. This is a great item and I highly recommend it to someone that needs a storage device, it comes preformatted for windows(10) so you can use it right out of the package just copy and paste or cut and paste and drop the files you want directly onto it. size appears larger then actual, it's the size of a normal hard drive with a hard shell around it about 7"x6"x3". Only used on Windows 10, I have read that Mac users need to format before using and have trouble doing so. When you buy this make sure that it is wrapped in cellophane if purchased BRAND NEW!! As a back up I wanted to buy a second 8TB, waited until it was deal of the day at $119.99, but purchased from Best-Buy On ebay (it came sealed with 2 stickers=Used/refurbished), well the best buy customer service told me that the sales through the ebay store is a separate affiliate/entity and they couldn't do anything for me. Great value at only $17.50 per TB, wish I could have kept the second one

All-In-All, quite good for a mechanical hard drive.Read performance is stellar: Windows average of around 300 MBs to an internal SSD across the same USB 3.0 hub. Not much to bring up on the read side of things.The one star I knocked off was because of how hot this drive can get. And this drive can get HOT! Very hot. Particularly under load. Small file copies are not a problem... I saw no discernable temperature increase when copying small files, even large numbers of small files, but when larger files (i.e., +10 GB or greater) are being copied or moved, the temperature climbs rapidly. When I first started moving files to the drive from my internal SSD, the temp readings on the WD drive shot from a balmy 32c to a whopping 56c in about six minutes and continued to climb from there. It got so hot, in fact, that I was afraid the drive was going to cook itself before I could find a way to cool it down (ultimately I had to stop the file move until I found a way to cool the drive). The problem was easy enough solved: I placed it on top of a table fan next to its big brother. This forced copious amounts of air through the hard drive case and that brought the temperatures back into a much more normal range of 32c-35c. So if you are planning on getting this drive, get some form of active cooling with it if you're going to be putting it under heavy load (a fan to sit on top of or underneath it, something to force large amounts of air through the case to sink the heat away from the drive) because it will heat up very quickly to a point that hard drives should not heat up to.Curiously, I had the exact same heat issues with the WD 16TB easystore drive (actually the heating was a little faster and a little more extreme on the 16TB easystore) along with the speed issues I noted earlier. I'm not sure if the heating is a design flaw in the drives themselves, or just poor ventilation in the cases with no internal heat sinks. Either way, again, an active cooling apparatus is your best bet to keep this drive, and I suspect as other easystore Drives (certainly the 16TB which I've also personally work with), from overheating.All-In-All, even despite the heat issues, I'm very pleased with this drive. Again, large capacity, easy on the wallet (on sale), and hey it fits with the black decor of my rig. The only thing it's missing are a few RGB accents and it would be practically perfect. So, if you catch it while it's reduced, get it while the getting is good (with an active cooling solution, of course).

As for quality, there is no doubt that media played from a disk that was ripped from your purchased BD or 4k BD is going to be better than streaming the same title so with that in mind, grab a few of these drives as you can never have enough storage. These WD drives are quite, mainly because they run at lower RPMs and the enclosures are actually fairly good at deadening the noise from the drive. These points give this drive a Excellent value as you can buy 2, 4 or more of these and use one as a useable drive and the other as a backup and you will be fine for the most part. Those are the Pros, now lets hit some of the Cons, you MUST be careful with these drives, one accidental knock over of the drive, even a small one can cause catastrophic damage to the platers, additionally these drives use the incredibly annoying type of USB cable that tends to get lose over time if you unplug and re-plug the cable at the drive, so I recommend unplugging from the end that plugs into whatever device you are using and leaving the end that plugs into the drive plugged in as once they get lose they become very unreliable (basically if you even breath on the cable it can shift slightly and the drive disappears from your system, jiggle the cable and it comes back again, so use the other end when unplugging to take to another system. Another points, as mentioned before, the large drives of today are more fallible and must therefore consider a duplicate drive to clone your data to in case of failure, again I knock 1 point off for Quality because these larger drives have a higher tendency to fail, but that goes for Seagate, HSGT, Toshiba and others. Finally the power connectors on these drives are extremely large and if you are using a battery backup (which you should be) then this one power connector will take up one plug and block another regardless of were you put it as the top end overlaps the outlet above it and if you plug it in the other way then the adapter not only blocks a 2nd outlet but the power wire coming out of it can block even a third outlet so consider getting some small 1.5 foot extension cables to help eliminate this issue. The large power plug makes ease of use a bit frustrating so I knock off a point for having to do some creative wiring in order not to block half my outlets. I hope this helps, as for performance, I transferred a 27GB test file from one eternal drive to another in around 2-3 minutes which is pretty impressive and thus you should have no problems with playing your shows or even using it as a game drive.VipersHardware

The WD Easystore External Hard Drive does its job very well. The transfer rates are very constant when writing and reading. I was able to get this product on sale for a good price.However, I've noticed the prices have increased over the last several months to start 2024. I would not recommend the higher prices, because there are other brands that perform just as well for lower prices. It is particularly disturbing the way Best Buy claims this item is now sold for a higher price in order to falsely lower the price as a "Deal of the Day." In reality, the "Deal of the Day" prices now are what the manufacturers suggested retail price was before.
