A Long Rant About Tech Support

They read from a script and then blow you off and disconnect you from chat with really exploring what might be wrong. They are poorly trained and poorly equipped. When I first got the device and when I upgraded the OS more recently, tech support was really good, helpful and knowledgeable. Now they are terrible. If you do not need support and can manage the clunky interface on your own, then the device is fine. Otherwise look elsewhere.

I have a 1250 GPB s router that makes use very fast. Keep it in an open space for good ventilation, and clean off the dust and your good to go. I’ve been using these drives for 10 years with no major issues that couldn’t be resolved. I recommend purchasing more storage than you originally want. You find more and more to store. For long term storage, this is an excellent option.

You can easily turn this into a 40 TB NAS by adding 2 x 20 TB drives. This thing is very reliable, easy to use and set up as well as being able to host all manner of servers and applets including Plex (which I use to stream my music collection because I'm old). The only downside to the WD cloud series NAS is their penchant for running fast fans every night when they decide to index the heck out of everything on the drives. There have been some times when it restarted b/c of overheating. Since then I've change where it sits (off the carpet and on a plane surface) and I put a 120 mm usb fan on top of it as a vent to keep moving air. Since then, it has been silent (or nearly). Good backup and file server

This is a good solution for me since I don't want to get involved with third party clouds and I have two computers. I had an old My Cloud that WD stopped supporting for access away from home and was too small anyway. The newer My Cloud requires internet access even if you are in your house (?), but not this model. I like that it can be configured as a RAID so the loss of either drive won't be catastrophic.Setting it up wasn't bad. It has a lot of capabilities and options, so it is a lot more complicated than just an external hard drive. Mostly it is just time consuming to move files over. The fan was always going for the first couple of days so it was really loud but I think that is because I was loading it with files and it was indexing them. After the first couple of days the fan rarely runs and it is very quiet. Maybe if you were streaming video from it the fan would restart, but I'm not doing that. There is a delay when accessing a file while the drives spin up, but otherwise this is much faster than the old MyCloud. I haven't tried to connect any external drives to it (which was painfully slow on the old My Cloud). One nice feature is putting the app on your phone and/or iPad so that they will back up photos from those devices easily and quickly.I will say keep an eye on prices. It was cheaper for me to buy the empty My Cloud and then get 2 4TB drives separately from Best Buy. Then I found another place that had the same WD Red drives even cheaper, so I was able to save a good bit.

Iffy Products

This review is more overall, not just the latest EX2 Ultra experience. This is my second replacement for this RAID case (3 total) in just a few years. No moving parts, they should last. This was just out of warranty, and they wouldn't help on that. I found both RAID Red drives showing red lights, testing bad. But fully functional. It is rare for both drives to fail at the same time. I bought a replacement for one, and tried mirroring it. The brand new sealed Red + drive tested bad and failed to initialize, while following WD support protocol. Support then recommended replacing the EX2 case instead/too. I did so, and both original drives tested good and the RAID is working fine so far. I have had 6 various WD hard drives fail, and three RAID cases fail. The point of ... MoreThis review is more overall, not just the latest EX2 Ultra experience. STRAIGHTFORWARD, RELIABLE, PEACE OF MIND!I'm a big fan of WD products. They are easy to set up and implement, reliable, and give me peace of mind when it comes to safekeeping all of my digital files. As a long-time customer, I have purchased and have been satisfied with their WD My Cloud Mirror product (which, after ten years, is still going strong), countless external hard drive storage devices (which have also been highly reliable), and now the My Cloud EX2 Ultra (which is functioning fantastically as a digital server, capable of streaming my 4TB of TV and Movie files). Great products and excellent customer support!

But as many others I was forced to replace my old, beloved, EX2 because of incompatibility with the new My Cloud OS 5. Unfortunately I didn't like the new os. Much of the configuration is a bit too much "plug-and-pray", and I especially hated the new mobile app. Because of that I have since left mycloud completely and am now running my own home-made cloud solution instead. So currently my unit is an expensive LAN-NAS only.I am however a bit of a nerd and don't like being told what to do, so maybe take what I said whit a grain of salt. And I haven't used any of the features for about a year and a half so maybe they are better now.I still think it's a very good NAS.But if your are not going to use any of the cloud-features there are other, more priceworthy, alternatives.

Remember that RAID1 means half the storage space
15 November 2023

Setup is very easy once you make contact with the drive. The online connection did not work. Instead use the MAC address and "arp -a" at a command prompt to find the IP address. Then http to that IP address. The 24TB drive came setup as 12TB RAID1, so remember the size is cut in half when ordering. Also, remember that Windows has a 128 character filename limitation so keep your directory names short. Set your WD username and password to the same username and password as Windows for automatic credential authentication access to your shares.

Serveral reasons: (1) doesn't use an easily removal caddy (plastic or metal) for the drives; (2) attaching side screws are only at the top, and not both top and bottom; (3) use of a screwed-in flashing to prevent the drives from moving should be used in conjunction with the disk caddies; (4) creation of a web-based file share is very awkward; (5) file sharing in general is cumbersome and difficult to setup; (6) no power button/switch - relies entirely with plugged into NAS assembly; (7) no shutdown function provided; (8) limited number of applications available; (9) majority of the so-called "free" applications either require a subscription, or a paid license; (10) customization of installed applications is cumbersome and awkward; (11) reset and/or factory ... MoreServeral reasons: (1) doesn't use an easily removal caddy (plastic or metal) for the drives; (2) attaching side screws are only at the top, and not both top and bottom; (3) use of a screwed-in flashing to prevent the drives from moving should be used in conjunction with the disk caddies; (4) creation of a web-based file share is very awkward; (5) file sharing in general is cumbersome and difficult to setup; (6) no power button/switch - relies entirely with plugged into NAS assembly; (7) no shutdown function provided; (8) limited number of applications available; (9) majority of the so-called "free" applications either require a subscription, or a paid license; (10) customization of installed applications is cumbersome and awkward; (11) reset and/or factory function(s) take far too long than other NAS manufacturers; (12) RAID with no spanning capability; and (13) limited amount of memory, nor is memory upgradeable.
