I'm super pleased to have added this to my set up and having the expanded storage space I need to feel confident in my gaming with memory and being able to save bigger files.

Its nice but the software to use is a bit of pain, everytime I turn on my computer I get error message that the drive cannot be started and needs to scan for errors, a real pain. It only offers backup not a clone that would continuously add files as I use the laptop.I had to remove the password, due that when you boot it cannot start the drive and the password would not pop up, I have to manually search the app and enter password and then run the app to run the back up, kind of like the 80's I thought we are in the 21st century and advance technology existed. It may be a ok drive but terrible software. My old one that is 15 years old, no longer works because the software does not support windows 10 or 11, so I cannot access my files backed up. No support. This is definitely NOT a "plug & play" device for Mac users. It involves downloading third party software, and then booting up the Mac in Recovery mode, and eliminating some of Apple's security functions on the Mac, so the third party software can add file extensions to the Mac's files. Not only is this a big pain in the butt, but it makes me uneasy. I've had problems associated with applications adding extensions to my files in the past. This external hard drive may work well for Windows users, I don't know, but I would not recommend it for Mac. I'm going to return it. And then I'll have to figure out how to uninstall the stuff it added to my hard drive...

I purchased the newest MacBook Pro of the time in 2021 Christmas, and paired it with a WD 1TB My Passport. Was being told that as long as I install all required softwares, the drive will work its magic. Turned out that wasn't true. It didn't work properly since the very first day of purchase, has been on and off on MacBook. Yesterday it just crashed all of a sudden while I was transferring photos into it. Ran all drive tests on Disk Utilities but all came back to be passed. There are plenty of precious memories stored in this external drive and I seriously don't know what to do. The drive doesn't come with a USB cable that's compatible with the newest MacBooks (as they no longer have ports for USB-A cables, adaptors are needed always). Please kindly advise BUT don't ... I've around 9 or 10 WD usb external drives from older generations, running backups, virtual machines, media repo, etc ... I always used WD as one of my preferable selections on internals drives for desktop, nas and servers farms. BUT never encountered this level of pool quality on WD products. Two units of last Passport, one crashed the controller cache in less 24h under very low workload, and other unit downsize the speed to 1/3 due the poor cable quality (120€ premium product that fails for a stupid poor quality cable) I'm not the only one that have problems for the simple cable, forums and review have a lot of them ... all WD marketing and name mark go ground by a stupid reduce cost on a stupid siple cable. OK we're looking for WD alternatives. bye bye.
This morning my WD My Passport 2TB Red just stopped working. It is only 11 months old. It stays in my office safe and has never been dropped or been hit by another object On this disk are ongoing projects, contracts, supply sources, accounting spreadsheets and a countless number of documents, films and photos. Tried several other External HDD cables, to no avail. Tried flushing all USB Data Device drivers on my laptop and reconnecting with different cables, to no avail. Tried to connect it on other computers several times with different cables, to no avail. Tried Data Recovery Software, to no avail. This disk is dead, not even a taskbar icon when connected. A disappointing experience to say the least.
This is a replacement, for a My passport I bought back in 2016!These models of western digital storage devices, aren't fast by any means; but are just what I need!I wasn't sure how durable this model would be; since this is my first time using this model, from Western Digital. This storage device (specifically the 5TB version), is VERY SMALL! Not a feature that I like a lot, but I mentioned this because some maybe looking for something small; you know, for convenience. The size makes me think that it could break more easily that other storage devices sold by Western digital, so I'm still unsure...The storage amount is spectacular!5TB?! WOW! My last My Passport was only 3TB; so this feels like a major upgrade! However, the write speed isn't anything to write ... My last My Passport was only 3TB; so this feels like a major upgrade! However, the write speed isn't anything to write home about (pun intended ^_^); so, it you ever need to move files to this model clear out your day.I only mention this because times have changed, and Western Digital has made EVEN FASTER storage devices; So you may want to consider buying one of Western Digitals SSD Storage devices. But if the some what slower write speeds of this model don't turn you off, you'll have a whopping 5TB worth of storage to look forward to.'I will definitely buy another Western digital storage device in the future; if and when I need it.
I installed, restarted, deinstalled, restarted, reinstalled and so on... It simply would not start working. compared to some youtube videos, it seems my drive came with fewer (2 Programs) for windows / for macOk installing may stop at around 18% repeatedly, but you may get lucky and have the full thing installed...the drive will most often (!) be recongnized, but that is about it, the settings button will (if at all) let you change your password (stress: CHANGE... you have to have had a password before in order to CHANGE)...but it WILL NOT let you SET UP a new password.the info says for win8.1. and win10 (i have win8.1.) and also tried it with win11...i simply would not work. Whether it's My Passport, My Passport Ultra, or Element, I've become an enthusiastic customer of Western Digital and their portable hard drives. The first two My Passport 1TB drives I bought over 9 years ago are still working without fault, despite many re-writings and repurposes over the years. Now I own over 20 WD portables, from 1TB to 5TB. Half of them back-up the other half because, yes, occasionally a drive will fail. I've had three of the drives develop problems during the warranty period and WD replaced each quickly at no cost to me at all. When one replacement drive went astray upon shipment (UPS was at fault) WD OVERNIGHTED another replacement to me. That was really impressive. When one replacement drive went astray upon shipment (UPS was at fault) WD OVERNIGHTED another replacement to me. That was really impressive. People who complain of getting a dud (dead) drive need to realise that it'll happen with any electric item sometimes. Contact the seller immediately and they will usually take care of you. Be wary of buying used drives that have not been factory refurbished by WD. I took a chance on a 4TB MP Ultra because of the $70 price. It ended up to be $70 wasted. I've always bought new since then.
I use many of these usb3 hhd for years, essentials, old passports, new passports, 1TB, 5TB and lots of 4TB padports. Like all hdd, they need surge of electrical power to startup, and a good USB port and cable. Occasionally the really old ones need two or three attempts at spinning up and initialize. The passports have always been solid performers. Knock on wood, no data losses. WD drive utilities are fine, but their backup software is horrrrrible. The drive itself and supplied cable is very good.
