I bought this hard drive to work as my time machine for my iMac. The drive is fast, pretty, small, and works almost perfectly. The one issue I have is that it will randomly disconnect when it is plugged straight into my iMac. This interrupts my backup and makes me worry about the integrity of the drive. After reading several reviews, forums, and other complaints I realized that this is a problem with how much power the drive is sucking from the computer. Apparently, the drive uses too much power when it is backing up large amounts of data. Since it is USB powered and there is a limit to how much power USB can provide the drive will shut down and disconnect. I read that many people have called WD to get a Y cable to connect to 2 USB ports. However, I found out that ... MoreI bought this hard drive to work as my time machine for my iMac. Before, I could barely get my iMac to backup without the drive disconnecting. Now it never disconnects. WD knows about this issue but they refused to admit it unless you call them and ask for a Y cable. For that I have to only give them 4 stars.

This external drive comes with its own backup software, as well as, other management software. It was easy to set up, runs silently, and has done a good job so far. I would give five stars if it had an LED to indicate data movement. Other than that, it works as advertised and I am happy with it.

I was looking for a "small" capacity external PORTABLE hard drive because I have read that flash/thumb drives can lose memory after multiple uses. My backup needs are less than 200 gigabytes so I definitely not interested in 2-3-5-10 Terabyte hard drives and paying so much more money for memory I do not need. The Passport fits the bill, price was right, and I may get another and rotate them.
We were running out of hard drive space on our laptop. The Office Depot tech recommended an external hard drive as the most efficient and cost effective solution. It would assure years of additional hard drive capacity at a low cost with minimal affect, if any, on the laptop's performance. He was right, and we now have the extra capacity we need without any affect on the laptop. He gave it to us at the on line price, which made it a very cost effective solution.
Good Points: Works well as an external drive. Only time will tell regarding long-term reliability, but all is well so far. I went for the 1TB as I don't need more, and I suspect that higher capacity drives are more likely to fail in the long term. The 1TB one has a 5 year warranty which the higher capacity drives don'tImprovement Points: I personally prefer other back-up software.
This is a really great External Drive. It's really small, light and thin. It's easy to use, with nothing crazy to install. File transfers and running games off it prove it to be surprisingly quick for running on an external drive. The design is great and really sets it apart from other external HDDs.
It is compact in size using 2.5 hard drive and OK for data transfer in terms of speed with its UPB 3.0 port. The data speeds though are purposely exaggerate and misleading as they refer to the theoretical data movement speed through the USB 3.0 bus and not the actual write speed of the hard drive. Actual write speed for sequential writes as when using it for backups is 101 MB/s or a fourth of what is claimed even with USB 2.0. Forget about 5GB/s which is stated by Western Digital. There is no RAID as with the LaCie double drive units so this should not be used as anything other than temporary additional storage for data.
