These drives didn't work for me. I ordered two drives which I intended to use as a RAID1 array in a Terra Master enclosure connected to a Mac Mini. After installing and formatting the drives, I found that they were: a) exceptionally noisy, b) slow to write data, and c) unable to complete the transfer of large data files. I was using this drive as a mass storage for my Mac fatted in HFS+. Had only used about 3 of the 6 TB and after a reboot the drive would not mount. Tried other Macs, tried windows using HFS+ software, no go. Disk utility says bad B-tree. After buying a $120 data recovery tool (disk drill) and recovering maybe 70% of the data from the drive, I formatted it again in HFS+. Still bad B-tree. Tried APFS, still errors. Tried not APFS and HFS+ under both MBR and GPT-fail. It will format in exFAT but Im not confident that I wont lose data seeing as how it will not successfully format in other formats. Gonna try my hand with a warranty claim but I dont want another one of these cheap drives.
All 3 of these drives that I have purchased (within 2 years) have failed. The last "operating" drive only reads at about 5 MB/s, which is sad. They all make a "chirping" sound at random, which is the motor powering up and down. Not buying another one of these drives. Not worth it. 3 of 3 basically bad hard drives. I would only rate these as fair because the motors have not completely given up, but the chirping and slow reads are only getting worse with time.

I bought this WD Red 6TB back in 12/2019 to go in my Synology DS412+ to replace an existing WD Red 3TB that is 4 years old. WD is now putting out documentation that these drives are actually not NAS rated drives. How could a reputable company let this happen. The whole purpose in buying a NAS rated drive is to put in a NAS system. This drive is barely acceptable for an archival system where you are only doing straight backups with no updates to the data already archived. Stay away at all cost if you want your RAID to stay intact and performing at peak performance. Google class action lawsuit against WD because of this issue. My drive is still in it's original sealed package and I refuse to put it anywhere near my RAID.

This is probably at least the 10th Red drive I have swapped in to our Drobo. As soon as I swapped in this drive I noticed it wasn't as usual. I am devastated, sad and angry with myself for trusting the product name so deeply that I didn't do research. And I am angry with WD for betraying that trust.
I bought two of these to put in a dual-drive NAS. They work great for my needs. I only use to NAS for backup purposes, not as primary storage. Otherwise I would go with the WD Red Plus because it uses CMR write technology rather than SMR like the WD Red. You can google CMR and SMR for more info on why that makes a difference.I ordered these directly from Western Digital and the shipping was super fast.
beware WD Red are SMR shingled. This means each writes will be wrtien twice after the buffer. Red are (EFAX)HDD ARE NOT SUATABLE FOR RAID. WD Red plus (EFZX) are CMR, not. Please get information on CMR disks.Performance in raid shows write drops while SMR will rewrite all in disk in shingled way to keep 6TB possibility.It's a ok drive for archive (loner drive), and very bad choice for raid.Replacing a 6TB with a WD Red (EFAX) in a raid environment wold take 9 days of write to rebuilt. This would cause stress to the disk and you data would be at risk for 9 days if you don't access your data during the process.
