In short, if you could get a PS5 you found that its built in hard drive was nowhere NEAR large enough to handle much gaming. There were really only two options: an external hard drive (which wouldn’t run PS5 games, only PS4 and backward) or install an M.2 SSD as a second internal hard drive. This required researching specs of various M.2 drives to ensure it would be fast enough to work in the PS5 and also looking into how to add a heatsink as most didn’t include that and it WOULD require heatsinks to not melt down inside the hardest to find gaming console since the Nintendo Wii fiasco of the early 2000s.All that to say that Western Digital cracked the code for expanding your PS5 without breaking the bank or having to put much thought into anything. Their WD_Black are well regarded in the video game fandom, they’re good long lasting drives without costing a fortune. In fact, the external drive I’d been using for my PS4 games was another WD_Black Playstation drive and it’s been great for the past couple years I’ve had my PS5, so I can personally verify they do good work! The SN850P is no exception so far. It's nearly twice the capacity of the factory hard drive (of the 1tb capacity Sony installed, only about 670gb is available out of the box due to system files) and it has the heat sink built in so all you need to do is install it. Installation is easier than you’d think, removing the plastic “wing” of the PS5, undoing a couple screws, and putting in the WD_Black drive before reversing to put it back together. For the past week I’ve had it the speeds are on par with the default factory drive, and while it could change as it gets older it’s plenty fast enough even if it slowed a bit. Also, longevity isn’t something I can speak to but as before I’ve had Western Digital drives before and my most recent external Playstation drive hasn’t given me any concerns for years, I have no reason to doubt this won’t perform admirably as well. The price on this is right and the name indicates quality, there’s a lot of options on the market but I don’t think you could do much better (and you can do much worse!) if you pop a WD_Black SSD into your console. I really don’t think you’d be disappointed.

Also, internal SSD's need a heatsink as well, due to the heat generated. Some may be turned away from installing something like a PC, but the process is fairly easy from start to finish. Please know that the WD Black SN850P comes with the attached heatsink and is *already included* and is an officially licensed PlayStation product too, so that takes some guess work out of the mix right away. I have included some pics showing what the PS5 system shows after initial install & what shows from installing 41 games(!). Couple COD's, several PS5 games from the new Diablo IV to GOW Ragnarök, Spiderman, etc. I chose 400GB plus available for upcoming games this year like FF 16 (91gbs) and future PS plus titles as well. The software install process was automatic with a confirmation button press to initially reformat for the PS5, then the downloading started for many hours to add games.I included the hardware install section here last due to the process requiring me to look online on how to properly install the SSD inside the PS5. Nothing too scary, use a small Phillips screwdriver and only takes 5 minutes. I think I struggled getting the PS5 side covers off more, to be honest. The following is a review of the actual numbers this SSD provides: I added 41 games that filled about 1.5 TB that averaged out to 36.5 GBs per game. There is something to be said for having this many games at your fingertips. I played games I haven't in years, simply because of convenience. Lastly, the transfer rate seemed to go about 1.5 GB/s from PS5 internal SSD to the WD SSD as well. A 60 GB game only took about 20-30 seconds!Even if you don't necessarily need extra storage, I love having all my favorite games in one place, I don't have to download again, just a quick 5-minute install. My tip is to make folders asap, trust me.Highly recommend this product to everyone.

My example measured at 6514MB/s. On par with my 980Pro in my desktop pc, which is insanely fast IMO.I then went to work on transferring games from the internal storage to this newly installed drive. First to move was FF7 Remake with the PS5 update clocking in at 81GB. The entire move took under a minute to transfer the files. Next I wanted to try more, so I grabbed three games, 180GB total, and it took under two minutes to move those large files.I'd say the internal storage on the PS5 is already about as good as you can get these days, now going from 825GB -> 2825GB means I shouldn't really need to delete games. Sure eventually it'll max out but with this size and speed I get to keep more local content ready to go when the mood strikes. This should be a no brainer for anyone with PS+ and the sheer volume of free games available, download until your heart's content.

[Rewarded Review] Excellent PS5 SSD Choice For Speed & Storage
16 June 2023

The WD SN850P SSD is a top choice for use in a PlayStation 5 but I’m unsure it has an advantage over its lower priced twin sibling, the WD SN850X with heatsink. On Western Digital’s website and other marketing materials, the SN850X with heatsink is listed as compatible with PS5. The SN850P is endorsed by Sony, the SN850X is not. The PS5 also has a slightly larger heatsink than the SN850X with heatsink. Those differences and their respective MSRPs, from my own research, seem to be what separate the two models. (I want to stress here this comparison is strictly between the SN850P and SN850X with included pre-installed heatsink.)The WD SN850P SSD is an update to the WD SN850, and, at least theoretically, offers speed improvement over its descendant. The WD SN850 was well regarded for its fast, smooth nature, so this release is more of a refinement of that older model.Out of the box, the WD SN850P feels solid with great build quality. The pre-attached heatsink is beefy and its industrial design is fun to admire, though not for long since installation hides it from view. I can only assume the heatsink is doing its job as I’ve yet to get any signs of overheating during 45min to 1 hour play sessions. I’m only a casual gamer and realize 1-hour sessions are not a long time to true gamers.Installation into the PS5 is simple, only requires a screwdriver, and will not itself void your PS5 warranty – Sony even has an official quick “how to” video on YouTube. Do be sure to follow directions including eliminating static electricity before handling the SSD or opening the PS5. The entire process took me about 5 minutes, only because I went slow removing the PS5’s cover, having never done it before and not wanting to break anything. The rest of the procedure is effortless. The WD SN850P has a perfect fit in all directions inside the expansion port. The PS5 automatically and quickly formats the SSD at the next “power on” – with user permission – and then reports the read speed of the new drive. My PS5 reported 6527 MB/s. I’ve included a screen shot since “pics or it didn’t happen.” The “in real life” read speed on this WD SN850P seems unchanged from the older WD SN850 for PS5 based on benchmark videos I’ve watched for the latter model. That’s not surprising since most of the speed gains in the WD SN850P are with its write functionality. I’ve also never seen any kind of storage device from any manufacturer consistently perform near its theoretical speeds.Once the SSD is ready to use you can use the “storage” menu on your PS5 to assign where your current and future games and apps should be stored; either on the SSD or the PS5’s onboard storage. It’s quick and easy to transfer games from one storage location to the other. My PS5 shows that I have the full 2GB of usable storage on the WD SN850P. Thumbs up there because its common to see market storage sizes that are bigger than actual storage size once formatted.Game play on the WD SN850P is terrific as it should be on a high-end SSD. Perhaps it’s a placebo effect, but I feel like game and scene load faster on this drive than on the PS5’s stock drive. Performance is super smooth, no hanging or stuttering at all even after playing for almost an hour and letting the PS5 and SDD heat up a bit. I’ve sampled fast moving games like Gran Turismo 7 as well as slower games like MLB The Show 2022.There is no doubt the WD SN850P more than gets the job done for PS5 game play and auxiliary storage. But with the specs of the lower priced SN850X with heatsink being nearly identical to the WD SN850P, the elephant in the room for me is, is the PS logo and Sony endorsement on the WD SN850P worth its extra cost over the SN850X? That’s a value question every buyer has to calculate into their own priorities. Some may find value and comfort in installing a “authorized,” product over a merely “compatible” one. Personally, in this case, I’d rather have a few more dollars in my pocket for games.

[Rewarded Review] Fast storage with a built-in heatsink

In case you haven’t noticed, games have gotten enormous! Having used M2.SSDs with my laptop in an external enclosure, I know how hot they can get, which is why I was happy to learn that this one from Western Digital includes a built-in heat sink that is small enough to fit into the space available in the PS5. Installing it was simple: slide off the side of the PS5, plug in the SSD, then use the screw and spacer already inside the PS5 and you’re good to go!Upon starting up the PS5 after installing my new storage, the PS5 lets you know that you need to format the drive. This took only a few seconds, after which time the storage was available. I’m happy to report that the full 1 TB of space was available, and there were no “free trials” or other sort of bloatware on the drive (probably a “feature” of having to format the drive before use). While I don’t have the ability to measure performance, I could not notice any difference in speed compared to the internal console storage. I moved several games to the new storage to free up space on the console. Note that even when you move a large game to the SSD, some game data (such as saved games, etc.) must stay in console storage. Moving gigabytes of game assets took just a few seconds. I also compared the performance of downloading new games to both internal storage and the SN850P, and I could see no difference in the time it took to download massive game files. Sony gives you the option to download all future games to the SSD, which is a convenient option. It’s great that the PS5 handles the additional storage so nimbly and easily.I’m super happy with the expanded storage, and it couldn’t have been easier to add it and start using it. If you’re running short on space, the SN850P is a great option, providing tons of additional storage at a reasonable price. The built-in heatsink means you can capitalize on all that extra space without having to worry about it running too hot and jeopardizing your game files. Plus, it has the official Sony PlayStation branding, which tells you that Western Digital worked closely with Sony to make sure it’ll work seamlessly with your PS5. Now to get some of those games I’ve been hearing about…

[Rewarded Review] Install ALL THE GAMES!!

The PS5 is a GREAT console. I've got all the major current gen consoles and while I was initially going to avoid the PS5 because I am not a fan of the design aesthetic, after a few months of streaming games from Playstation Plus on my PC I decided that I'd like the first party experience. So a PS5 was purchased and while I still do not like the design, I do love the user experience and having the ability to play games like SackBoy: A Big Adventure that I didn't have access to previously. The drawback to the convenience of having games installed locally and taking a sometimes inconsistent internet connection out of the equation is, of course, the amount of storage each game uses. While not terrible, Sony doesn't really have an out of box PS5 SKU that provides adequate storage for a robust offline collection. Thankfully, however, they did make adding additional storage very easy AND they took the good guy route and allowed for 3rd party NVMe drives.WD's WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN is one such drive. Tuned specifically for the performance demands of the PS5 and with a more than adequate heatsink, it is a fantastic upgrade. Installation is extremely easy and once you've got the side panel buttoned back up and your console powered on setup is as simple as can be. It only took me about 20 minutes total to open up my PS5, add the drive, close it back up, power on, format, and begin transferring my games over. The only thing I did notice is that the speed WD advertises vs what the PS5 reports were a bit different. I did not notice any performance issues and WD does state "up to" 7300 mb/s read / 6600 mb/s write and not that those exact speeds would definitely be achieved. All in all, I am very happy with the drive and have recommended it to friends who have also picked one up and are happy with it.

All-in-all I would say that this product is not difficult to install. On a scale of one to five, with one being extremely easy and five being extremely difficult, I would rate this product at a 2. The only trouble I had was fiddling a bit with the SSD when actually installing it (a bit of difficulty figuring out up from down), and removing the side plates on the PlayStation, but otherwise the installation went smoothly with no damage or troubles. The only items you will need when installing your new SSD is a small Phillips head screwdriver, and a way to help keep track of screws. A steady, gentle hand helps as well, as while it is difficult to lose a screw in the PlayStation 5, it is still possible.First, the PlayStation 5 system must be completely shut off, and unplugged. Next, the bottom support plate that keeps the PlayStation 5 upright must be removed, which is easily done by removing a single large screw. The next step is to remove the rear side plate on the PlayStation, which is the side that does not have PlayStation’s logo on it. This is where I ran into a bit of trouble and had to finesse the plate a bit in order to get it off. This is done by lifting up gently on the topmost portion of the plate, then sliding it forward and off. This reveals the inner portions of the PlayStation, as well as a convenient gray metal plate that covers where the SSD is going to go. This plate can be removed by a single screw (don’t lose it!). After this plate is removed, the SSD slot is visible, as well as a “spacer screw”. This screw helps keep the SSD secure and keeps it from moving. After removing the spacer screw, all I had to do was slot the SSD into place, which will make an affirming click, and then re-installing the spacer screw to secure the SSD in place. Afterwards, the gray cover can be replaced, and the PlayStation 5, re-assembled. After the PlayStation is booted up for the first time after installing the SSD, it will format your new SSD automatically for you, making you do less work. This lets you instantly gain access to your additional 2 terabytes of storage, as well as the performance boost granted by this product.Installation took approximately 5 to 10 minutes and was relatively simple. I have very little tech-savvy skills and know-how and have never once taken apart a computer or a PlayStation, yet thanks to the intuitiveness of both the PlayStation 5 system, and Western Digital’s simple design, I managed to install this product with ease, and it was honestly kind of fun! Now onto the performance. Before installing this product my PlayStation 5 had relatively fast load times, and little stuttering and buffering when either playing videogames or watching shows. However, after installing the Western Digital SSD, the improvements I saw were instant.Once the PlayStation formats the SSD for you, it gives you a system diagnostic of your new download and upload speeds and I noticed a huge improvement. The load times for my PlayStation 5 have been drastically reduced, and games that had the problem of painfully long load times are now a thing of the past for me. The games I play now have little to no stuttering whatsoever. Additionally, the 2 terabytes of storage let me install all of my favorite games without having to worry, while also keeping my actual console’s storage free for save-data, profiles, and screenshots/videos from my favorite gaming moments. Download times have dramatically increased as well, and updates that used to take hours now only take half the time, letting me jump back into the action twice as fast. Now even the most graphically demanding games load up with lightning speed thanks to the new SSD. This product does exactly what it is marketed to do and is well worth the cost. The product is accessible to people who may not be as technologically knowledgeable as others, and installation is easy and fun. The benefits the SSD provides well justify the cost, given the drastically improved load and download times, and additional storage space, it is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone looking to boost their gaming or streaming experience. There are also different things you can purchase to further boost your SSD’s performance! There is a heat-sink designed to adhere to the back of the SSD to help with over-heating issues. However, in my experience, heat was not an issue for my PlayStation even after hours of play. To conclude, the installation for this product was easy, simple, and only took 5 to 10 minutes even for someone with few technological knowledge. Due to the auto-formatting of the SSD the PlayStation does for you, I was able to instantly experience lightning-fast load and download times, and the massive amount of extra storage. I would rate this product 5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend this product to anyone who loves video games as much as I do.

Proper heat management allows the drive to maintain optimal performance during sustained heavy workloads.Compatibility: The SN850P is designed for the PS5 and works flawlessly when incorporated. But this drive will also work in any system that supports PCIe Gen4 technology. It’s backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 interfaces but you won't be able to fully utilize its maximum performance potential without a Gen4.Price: Price seems about right for this drive and is competitive with the current market of high performance SSD’s of its capacity and abilities. In conclusion, the Western Digital WD Black 1TB SN850P Internal SSD has been super impressive at delivering exceptional performance, trusted reliability that comes with the Western Digital name, and conveniently included heat management built in. With its PCIe Gen4 interface, it offers incredibly fast speeds and is a great choice for demanding gaming sessions and/or content creation. I have thoroughly enjoyed having this drive as part of my setup. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to add a little more storage space but wanting super speed with it.

[Rewarded Review] Super simple way to expand you PS5 storage!
27 June 2023

This WD Black PCIe storage is a fast and easy way to upgrade your storage, it's appreciated that Sony went with a no proprietary form factor for expanding storage. There are a ton of options out there, one thing that Sony suggests is a specific minimum read/write speed. The great thing with the Sony Licensed sticks is that they will meet the requirements without you needing to do any research. Heatsink is another factor that is recommended, which helps to avoid overheating or damaging anything. The slot for the memory is hidden under the side panel, on my disc version PS5, you will need to remove that panel. There is a single screw that you remove to uncover the slot, there is also a screw with a standoff that you will need to move to secure the SSD (They both are phillips). Once you place the drive in and secure it, be sure to place the cover back over the slot to ensure proper air flow.Once you plug your console back in you will be prompted to format the drive, this will set up your drive to be used for game storage and test the speed of the drive. Once set up, you can select the drive as your default storage location or select it if your internal storage is full. With these drives in spec for optimal use with the Playstation 5, I didn't notice anything in terms of longer load times or issues with simply reading, it's a separate storage slot, but to your game library it is treated all the same. I like to keep the games I am playing constantly on the internal drive, and place everything else on this internal PCIe drive, in terms of PS5 games. I have an external WD drive that I use for my PS4 games. It's great how PS5 handles the games. I am able to choose my prefered storage location for PS5 games, but also set my PS4 games to install to a different drive.Installation is simple enough, I don't take the panels off very often, so I had to look up which corner to pull up and slide the cover off. It's very easy to find, I think a small photo on the included documentation in terms of installation would be nice. But this is simple enough that most anyone should be able to install, and a installation video would show how easy of a process this is to anyone!More storage is always welcome, this officially licensed product with WD just lets you know you got a manufacturer suggested drive, and takes the question out of buying.

I cannot begin to stress what a lifesaver this has been. Why Sony only gives you 1 terabyte from the start (base model Slim) I'll never know. I previously had a 1tb 850 by WD and its speed were fast, but not this fast. I noticed the speed difference when I transferred my memory off of the old device onto the console memory (1 terabyte, I had to delete a few items). My internet runs at about 4-500 mb/s and that transfer took about 15-20min. After transfering the new content on the 4tb ssd it only took around 10-15 min (around 12). This difference may not seem like much, but many people know the frustrations of waiting for a game to download prior to being played. For me, its like going from 3g cellular service to 5g. Highly recommend Wd, especially since its ... MoreI cannot begin to stress what a lifesaver this has been. Why Sony only gives you 1 terabyte from the start (base model Slim) I'll never know.
