As a word of advice to all of those who experience failures, I do a lot of research on hard drive failures. I have never had a hard drive fail on me and I have owned dozens of them for years. So here are some protocols I follow very strictly: 1. Make sure you have your computer hooked up to a UPS. This prevents the drive from shutting down unexpectedly and can prevent damage to the head or PCB Board. 2. Make sure your case has good airflow, keep the drive cool. Bought this to replace a 6 year old hard drive on my Linux laptop. At the first sign of the drive beginning to fail, I immediately powered off the machine and ordered a new drive (this one) from NewEgg. Upon receiving the package, I ran all supported SMART tests (smartctl) and badblocks from a Linux live CD, as well as another utility. Not a single bad sector or error was found. Afterwards, with the same live CD, I dd'ed the entire old drive to the new drive, and now I'm back in business, right where I left off! Magic! Man, I love Linux. And NewEgg too! And Western Digital, of course!

I got it to replace the previous drive which lasted 4 years, then died. this one worked fine for 6 months, but now it is showing the same symptoms as the old one did (system suddenly shuts down with no warning, then restarts). Once I even got a Blue Screen but with only a couple of memory addresses showing on it. It appears the problem is the drive runs hot. As I write this I have the case open and am blasting a little desktop fan directly at it from a range of 6 inches to keep it cool. Also I moved the secondary hard drive so that this one has air space all around it. Since taking these measures it has not ""twitched"" again... fingers crossed. It appears these drives are a crap shoot. Some are in good shape, others have been abused or refurbished or something and ... I needed a PATA drive to fix a relatives computer (fixed income). I would have preferred a larger drive, but...not many larger PATA's out there now. Once formatted, the usable space was about what is expected (on the low side, but in the margin). The drive is not noisy, and when booting on drive, spinnup speed is very good. Very happy about drive - and I am a major fan of WD, so kept with that brand. Only wish is larger PATA drives were available from WD.
Used this drive to reinvigorate an old Dell office desktop - it's my #2 desktop machine. Had an old XP installation on a 40GB drive that made molasses look fast. Installed Ubuntu on the WD drive. Immediate speed increase (you'd expect that with a new installation) and a lot more room. No hassles - took me about 90 minutes to swap drives and install and configure the OS to my satisfaction. As an aside, I've gone to Ubuntu for both my office machines and also my work laptop - the laptop is a state-pf-the-art i7 laptop, but the desktops are 6-year-old P4s that ran very slowly with XP. So I'm happy both with the drive and the OS. This was a very cost-effective way to upgrade both office machines and make them fast & useful again. Newegg delivered the drive in jig time ... I went through many of the other reviews before purchasing this product. I am aware that besides the Raptor hdd's, Western Digital's quality control on these lower end products has slipped. However I was fortunate to get a good product the first time. Packaging arrived wrapped in bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts were included. Many stated in their reviews that the drive failed after 2-3 weeks. I have had the drive for 3 weeks now and everything is working just fine. Final thoughts: Despite the horror stories many had to go through with this product, I still say this is the one to buy for its balance in price/performance. And for a older Pentium4, WinXP machine it really does give it a boost in performance. I will write a follow-up review after a year of operation ... WARNING: Apparently the additional power requirements were too much for my aging PC. My power supply should have plenty of wattage to spare, but power supply wattage supposedly decreases with age. Anyway, the power supply failed to provide enough power and screwed up something on my old Maxtor slave HDD. Oddly enough it started working again after running ddrescue. Finally I had to disconnect the Maxtor slave HDD to keep the new WD HDD happy with enough power. PRO: Still working after 2 months of light usage. I am disappointed in Newegg. I bought a warranty thinking that if the drives go bad, they would be replaced. The way it looks to me is that if the drive does not fail, the warranty company makes a profit. If it fails, you just get your money back. They win either way. I won't be buying drives like this again. I have purchased more than $80,000 of computer parts over the years from a few different companies. I can find someone else to buy drives from if this is the best this place can do.
The drive is working 100% as intended, with 0 bad sectors. This drive has no physical issues of any kind, no worn bearings, no odd clicking sounds, and no scratches on the drive at all! These are getting harder and harder to come by, so I am very happy to own this drive.
