I do my testing doing windows copies and take the numbers directly from the copy prompt. I think that is the best indicator of ‘real-world’ performance. My computer is an Intel i7 with 16GB memory and Plextor SSD drive. Copying from SSD to this drive I received bursts over 300 megabytes per second lasting a second or two, then sustained transfers of 50 megabytes a second give or take for about 10 seconds, then another burst, repeating through the transfer. This is a very slow sustained speed for those whom are moving around large amounts of data (IE movies, photographs, backups, etc). It may prove helpful for lightly servers in small offices whom are transferring small documents repeatedly. That being said I’ve tested their main competitor’s enterprise drives and have seen marginally less burst speed, but a better overall throughput which I think is more beneficial for average drive use. I’m a Western Digital fanboy, but cannot recommend this drive. That might just be why they’ve been discontinued. FYI: Drives this big need to be formatted as a GPT partition. Not a big deal in windows 7+ or linux, but possibly problematic for old windows 2003 servers unless you want two partitions.

I'm PC enthusiast and an avid gamer. One of the reasons that led me to this drive is that my OCZ Vertex 4 512GB SSD is not enough to hold all of my games--especially my Steam games. I needed something better and reliable. For my set up, I have the main Steam app and games installed on this WD RE 4TB drive. I use SteamMover app (Google it) to move the games I play the most on the OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. If I don't play it much anymore, I can just move it back to the WD RE drive and transfer another one in. Works great for me. This app retains all file associations and locations even after moving the games using SteamMover. Other use for this drive is I have stored some of my encrypted volumes here that has my banking records, resume, and other sensitive files that I cannot ... MoreI'm PC enthusiast and an avid gamer. I purchased this WD4000FYYZ 4 TB drive (sold through goharddrive.com) to replace a failing duplicate drive in my Synology NAS. Within a day of installing the drive, the NAS reported an I/O error on the drive. I then ran an extended S.M.A.R.T. test to check the drive. The test reached 90% after a few hours, then "stuck" there. It was still stuck at 90% after a week. The drive was shipped in bubblewrap (no box) in a too-small USPS Flat Rate box.Maybe I just got a defective drive, but the packaging suggests the drive might have been damaged in shipping.I'm requesting a new drive.
My unit arrived with no warnings or failures; SMART was reporting a healthy drive. Power on count of 66 times, power on time of 67332 hours, 163TB total host writes, 1,676TB total host reads. Obviously these were used in servers for several years. Even so, HGST drives are known for their incredible reliability, so I am expecting this drive to continue functioning for many more years to come.
Bought several of these 4TB drives for a 12-bay NAS using RAIDZ2. Fantastic price, drives function flawlessly. Ran SMART checks and have been running heavy write/read operations, and no issues. Will end up buying many more. Highly recommended for anyone who wants cheap bulk storage (redundant NAS or server). These are refurbished, so make sure to use them with adequate redundancy (i.e. 2 drives parity for each array).
This is an enterprise-grade drive, so it's reliable, reasonably fast, and has a good warranty. It's also power-hungry, runs a little warm, and can be loud, but that's to be expected. I have nearly 20 of these drives and have only ever had one die on me. They can also run up to 5 C hotter than the WD Red drives at idle, and more than that under heavy load. They are also noticeably louder than the WD Red drives. I don't have a decibel reading or anything, but it might get annoying if you have these drives a few feet from your desk, but then again these are designed for servers. They are more expensive than other 3 TB drives, but if you're someone who needs durable drives you'll appreciate their reliability and extra warranty.
I have 16 drives in a Norco 4220 4x 3TB Baraccuda XT (Triggers heat warnings at 115F, avg temp under full load is 109) 4x 3TB WD Red (Never had a heat warning, avg temp under full load is about 95) 4x 4TB Datacenter (these drives) (Triggers heat warnings at 105F, got to 115 and my system shut itself down) 4x 10TB Ironwolf (Never had a heat warning, under full load it gets to about 102) I took some drives out so I had on Column of one of each drive on the far left, next Column completely empty, then I had a Datacenter in Row 1, and Ironwolf in Row 3, then the last Column was empty. The Barracuda is a 7200RPM drive, so I expect it to get warmer than the others. I am very surprised, and disappointed a the heat tolerance and susceptibility of these drives. I would expect a lot more from a "Datacenter" / "Enterprise" drive that would be stacked and on 24/7. I should have gotten more of those Ironwolfs instead of wasting my money.
The WD RE series SATA III drives are outstanding enterprise drives. Designed for long life in server use with a 24X7 duty cycle they are ideal for that environment. Their 5 year warranty speaks to their reliability. With Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) the RE series drives are well suited RAID based applications which are not suitable for desktop drives which can give false failures with their extended error recovery timings. The RE drives are economically priced with a relatively low cost per gigabyte and a wide range of capacities from 250GB up to 4TB. I recently installed a pair of RE drives in a client server in a RAID1 configuration. The RE drives are economically priced with a relatively low cost per gigabyte and a wide range of capacities from 250GB up to 4TB. I recently installed a pair of RE drives in a client server in a RAID1 configuration. As I've come to expect they worked perfectly and with some initial testing are slightly faster than the RE4 drives that were already in this server. I been running dozens of servers for myself and my clients for decades and using the Western Digital RE series of enterprise drives since the RE3 line came out. I've continued throughout the RE4 drives and now the RE (no number) which are the latest and appear to be even better than than the predecessors. These RE series drives have been very reliable with no failures in years. When I want reliable and economical server storage the RE drives are the center of my comfort zone. To improve performance even more I have started using smallish SSD drives for some server applications; using a SSD RAID1 for the OS and RE drives in RAID1 for the bulk data storage. This can really boost server performance while balancing costs. If you put these into a desktop PC don't expect them to be super quiet! They are not very quiet drives which is fine in most server applications. Overall Western Digital has demonstrated continued improvement in their enterprise RE drives. When I want drives I can depend on for solid performance in a 24X7 environment RE is my go to drive. Hope this helps someone!
